4-way traffic light with 2 bulbs not 8?

Do any of you know about a town (maybe several) that tried putting green on top and red on the bottom in one direction, then
red on top and green on the bottom in the other direction?  It didn't work because too many people were colorblind.  I tried finding the story on the web but didn't have any luck.  The best I could do was that Irish community in Syracuse with green on the top, presumably in all 4 directions.

It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Is this what you were looking for?

You also had the three-color signal with only 3 bulbs in it:

So there WAS a prototype for the 1960s Buddy L Traffic Signal.

WOW! I had no idea these existed. When I was a kid I was going to make one of these and put it at an intersection in my driveway, because I thought it would be fairly easy to make it actually work. (Having a yellow I thought was going to be too difficult.)

I knew there were 4-way blinker lights back in the day, but never knew there was a full blown tri-color assembly.  Great bit of roadgeekery history!

That's still not an excuse for Signal Ahead signs to be hung upside down!   :bigass:

I remember seeing one set up like that in Seminole, Oklahoma back in the mid-'70s. As I recall, the upside-down orientation faced the side street. It was the only one I've ever seen in the wild.

Seminole is still full of decrepit signals, though I think they're still too new to be interesting.

Just looking at Seminole in GSV, you ain't kidding - signals are in pretty bad shape.  Also, just looking around, I can't believe this intersection is a 4-way stop, for a junction of 2 divided 4-lane roads.  Guess I'm just not used to seeing something like this, but there is probably a lot more road than there is traffic that needs it.

On the other hand, mounting them sideways is perfectly acceptable and totally badass.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

I was just there on Tuesday. I agree, it should really have a stoplight, considering the similar SH-9 and US-377/SH-99 intersection to the east has one.

Speaking of US-377/SH-99, it takes the cake for decrepit signals: https://www.google.com/maps/@35.221085,-96.6711,3a,50.5y,179.36h,85.15t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1stGUPOtLzIJneaWLl9adZOQ!2e0 I think this was, at one time, a pedestrian crossing signal, but it was left to die a horrible, horrible death. I think legally you are supposed to stop here, since it is a darkened/inoperative signal, but nobody seems to do that. How much of the signal head has to be present for it to be considered a traffic signal...?

Is it not in state code that if 75% of the signal heads have been rotated so they face perpendicular to the road surface, it is no longer considered a signalized intersection?  :sombrero:
