Really dense fog for the last 60 or so hours. We had to travel to State College twice in this weekend, and fog got thicker as we went north. By the time we hit Lewistown, the fog got really thick. You couldn't see maybe twenty feet in front of you.

We got a surprise snow shower today in the Baltimore area. The weather forecast said partly cloudy so I was caught off-guard.

Time for a temperature plunge again here in Winnipeg. After seeing temps near the freezing mark (but still below), temperatures will fall close to -20 C (0 F) or so for the next little while. The sun will come out though, which is nice considering the clouds that have hung around here for the last little while.

noelbotevera

The whole day was just snow. Then sunlight. Then snow again. Then sunlight. It stayed around the 30s - it got as low as 21 or 22 degrees here.

My uncle was telling me how he heard about the lack of sunshine we had in January, and I found this short article online about it:
http://www.570news.com/2017/01/29/january-seeing-less-average-hours-sunlight/

QuoteIf you feel like you haven't seen the sun in a very long time, you're not wrong.

Waterloo Region saw less sunlight this January than in past years.

The average amount of sunlight in January is 86 hours, or 21 days of sunlight.

However, as of January 29th, we've only had 12 hours of sunlight, or four days with sun.

"The only sun I've seen for us was New Year's Day, which was really nice. The 2nd, in the morning. The 6th and the 15th, which were really nice for the most part, and that's about it,"  says 570's Weather Specialist, John Wilson.

The lack of sunshine is likely due to the mild temperatures we've had over the past few weeks, as cold weather is required in the winter for sunshine.

Milder weather means lower clouds and fog, which we have seen lots of this month.

Good news is, that as we head into February, some sunshine is in the forecast for our region!

Thankfully the last week has been more sunny, because the cloudy days have been a bummer. I'm hoping for more snow too, since I'll be skiing in Ellicottville, NY next weekend.

Wind and rain, pretty fierce gusts.

34F and clear. Should get up to 42 today.

Though a few days ago I was briefly faked out into thinking today was going to be a major snowstorm, as several people on my facebook feed were posting a "Super Bowl Sunday Storm" map graphic from a Toledo news station that showed 6-10 inches predicted for most of Northern Ohio. As it turns out, it was a graphic from 2 years ago that someone had re-shared as a joke.

It's starting to snow in some of Western Washington, but otherwise just overcast and mildly cold in my backyard. Hoping for some good accumulation tonight.

kkt

Bit of snow sticking to lawns and parked cars, some more snow showers expected overnight.  Possible public school closure tomorrow.

Cool morning, but will be nice and warm later. Hmmm good day to get these Mustangs cleaned up.

Not even an inch of snow has fallen in the Chicago area since December 19, and there's hardly any predicted for the rest of February.  Rain and thunderstorms forecasted tonight into tomorrow.  I saw lightning strikes on three different days in January.  A strange winter indeed.

About 1" of snow here in the Ravenna neighborhood of Seattle.  More falling.
Public schools closed, UW cancelled classes.

Hills.

South Hill/Puyallup, about 30 miles south of Seattle, has received 14 inches. Is that sufficient to cancel school?

Pfft.  We have hills, too. :D

Ravenna is at about 2" now.  Ravenna gets around the least snow within Seattle.  There's microclimates, more on hills, more closer to Puget Sound where the snow hits land first.

Hills are an issue.  Also consider that we only get snow within the city for a day or two every 2-3 years, so:
Drivers don't get in practice
Cars have on all-season tires and most have 2wd
Only enough snowplows to plow major arterials
Also it's warm, wet snow, not powder.  Expect fun in the morning after the wet snow turns to ice overnight.

53F and raining. I was woke up at 5:20 this morning by the first clap of thunder I've heard this year.

It was warm yesterday. The high was 65 and I think the low was 44 or 45. Not warm enough for wearing shirts and shorts, but I didn't feel too cold.

Let's just say it snowed enough this morning for RPI to close. Looks like at least a foot on the ground and still falling. Little has been plowed and there have been quite a few accidents on the roads this morning.

Raining pretty hard.  Shows up all the places where the drainage isn't so good.  I would have been smarter to wear a longer coat, my pants are soaked.

Rothman

Roads are "okay" here, across the river, relatively speaking given the ongoing snowfall.

That said, took them longer than usual to plow my road today, probably due to the lousy predictions.

Yeah, I was expecting 4 inches. Not this nonsense. Troy DPW is usually really good with this and they can't keep up. If I had to get out, Congress Street has ruts and I could probably make it. Minor streets and and suburban subdivisions aren't so lucky. One of my professors is snowed in and her street hasn't been touched.
