Today's temp in Seattle is well below normal. Expected highs maybe 60 if we're lucky, with some rain.

Had an outdoor barbecue planned for today with family, that we planned several weeks ago. June is hit and miss but even we didn't expect such a cool day. Normal high is 70, and not normally too rainy either. Needless to say, it has been moved inside (though cooking will remain outside).

I will take the rain, as it has been relatively dry, but I don't think we're desperate for rain just yet. That may change by September, though.

Coldest June day in almost a decade! Definitely welcome to have the rain back to wash away the pollen (which made the last few nights hell to sleep through).

Well, the rain is finally over, and my locality finally hit 90 degrees on June 6 (after places like NYC, Bismarck, Portland, and DC). For the next week, it'll hover around 90 and be partly cloudy. Mild and normal weather pattern, but nice. Summer has arrived.

Starting to become concern we are heading into a potentially bad drought. Already much of northern Illinois is under a moderate drought and we still have no major rainfall signs in our future. Models have begun to print out near 100 degree highs by next week, which is following a similar trend to 2012 and 2005 for the area.

We also are in the quietest start to severe weather in the last 25 years with only ONE severe warning so far

Torrential rain both last night and this morning, though not as much as areas southwest of here (on the 11:00 news last night, they said Culpeper had gotten over eight inches of rain already and was going to get more). I wish we could somehow transfer some of this rain to areas out West. When it stops, I'll have to redistribute the mulch in the flowerbed out front because stormwater runoff is cutting a channel through it and washing some of it into the grass.

I'm glad we picked up the RX-7 from the mechanic on Wednesday and put it in the garage at home: Both window regulators are busted and the parts are on order, but in the meanwhile, the power windows don't work but the glass doesn't always stay all the way up–it starts to slip downwards–so if the car had been parked outside at the mechanic, the inside would be getting soaked from the small gap at the top.

On the plus side, it's only 69° outside after feeling like 100° on Wednesday (which, no doubt, is part of what led to the storms).

Kansas only had 17 tornadoes last year–the lowest number since at least 1950.  (But 43 earthquakes over magnitude 2.5.)

We're at the point of the year where the heat index rears its ugly head. HX may reach as high as 110 by this afternoon.

Currently partly cloudy and 89 with a heat index inching near to 100. This weekend the high will get up to around 95 (pretty hot for this early in the year).

"Heat index" is a stupid concept.  What's it supposed to represent?  That is to say, when does an actual temperature of 95°F also have a heat index of 95°F?  Because, unless I know that, then the heat index is meaningless to me.

"It feels like 103 degrees!"  Oh, really?  How can I possibly know what 103 degrees feels like, if every time I've been in 103°F weather, the heat index was something else?

They're defined as identical at 20% humidity. It varies by temperature and is closer to 40%, although decreasing with higher temperatures.

What I don't like about heat index is that it doesn't take wind speed into account. (The calculations assume 6 MPH wind speed.)

I think with the heat index, it's pretty easy to calculate since you just take into account the air temp, humidity, and dew point. Trying to then factor in wind speed wouldn't be impossible, but I don't know if wind is steady enough for that to be a useful number.

I was wrong. The Wikipedia article on heat index says otherwise; I have modified my post above.

To me, I interpret the heat index (and the wind chill) as a measurement of how dangerous it is to be outside in either heat or cold.

The temperature is a physical measurement of energy, while the heat index takes in the humidity and dew point to provide an approximate measurement of the temperature that you'd be feeling if humidity had no effect on the heat, if that makes any sense.

Anyways, the larger the difference between the heat index (or the wind chill) and the actual temperature, the more I take caution with my outdoor activities.

Today was hot, with a high of 90, until a storm front showed up. One of the cells in the storm front was about to hit my city until it suddenly curved to the east, giving me zero rain, while towns just east of here became subject to flash floods.

We had a cold front move through Salt Lake yesterday morning. We spent all of yesterday in the 60s and today in the 70s, and last night's low was 46 - uncharacteristically cold for June.

Unfortunately, this refreshing cool weather is just about over. Tomorrow will be in the lower 90s, and then starting Sunday we're in for several days of absolutely brutal hot weather as a huge high pressure system builds into the 4 Corners region. Highs will be at or over 100 for most of the week with lows in the low 70s. Unsurprisingly, the National Weather Service has already issued an excessive heat watch.

Several long-standing records at SLC are going to be in jeopardy with this heatwave. The current forecast calls for 6 days in a row of 100+ temperatures, which has never occurred in June before (current record is 4). In addition, we are already forecast to tie our all-time June record high of 105; temperatures this high have only been measured on 20 days in the entire period of record (since 1874). There's even an outside shot we might reach or break our all-time record high of 107.
