Title: Natuashish - Isolated Roads In Northern Labrador (with photos)
Post by: ghYHZ on November 20, 2010, 03:27:31 PM
There's about a 200KM gap between the end of the Trans Labrador Highway at North West River (near Goose Bay) and the new Innu Community of Natuashish in northern Labrador.

The main road through Natuashish is isolated from the road network and begins at the Community Wharf where the Labrador Marine Coastal Boat arrives weekly in the summer and fall (vehicles can be shipped in) It extends inland approximately 9 KM, passing the Town Centre and ends at the Airport . (there is scheduled service on two airlines) In winter there's a snowmobile trail down to Goose Bay.....about a 5 hour run.

Here's a few shots around the community:

Note the raised platform around the hydrant in the last photo.....the snow banks can get high here in winter!.....also the panel board next to the hydrant. It's for the electric heat-tracing system on the water mains.

Thanks. We flew in on the Air Labrador Twin Otter in the photo and it was one of the most enjoyable flights I've been on. In the 2 1\2 hour run up from Goose Bay we stopped at 5 airports along the coast.....all with very scenic approaches in over the shoreline and cliffs. We were there last week for work and could have easily been snowed in this time of the year.....but ended up with great weather....sunny and temps in the 3 > 5 (40F) range.

In the third picture it looks like someone has spray painted the 30 sign to make it say 80. I imagine the ride at 80 would be uncomfortable on such a road.

Yes, it certainly looks like the 30 was changed to 80. The roads within the Town Centre are all posted 30......as you can see in the photos, there are no sidewalks so everyone is walking on the roadway. The 9 km long access road (photo 2) between the dock and airport is in very good condition and fine for the posted 80 km/h (50mph).
