Hickman Road Bridge opens in Stanislaus County with a home for bats.

The bridge was home to more than 6,000 bats so efforts had to be made to protect them during construction.

Commuters will get some relief when a new bridge opens to traffic Monday in Stanislaus County.

The Hickman Road Bridge crosses the Tuolumne River south of Waterford. Work has been ongoing since June 2020 to replace the original span, which was built in 1964.

The bridge is 750 feet long and 75 feet tall and its price tag was $18 million.

Emergency repair efforts began in 2004 after the original bridge was deemed structurally deficient.

The bridge was home to more than 6,000 bats so efforts had to be made to protect them during construction.

The new bridge includes houses for the colony.

The old bridge will be demolished over the next few months.
