Greetings:

A new content update has occurred at Virginia Highways Project.

Pages have been updated and greatly expanded:

VA 61 to VA 80 has been split into two pages:
VA 61-70: http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va061-070.htm
VA 71-80: http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va071-080.htm

I argue for the past existence of a VA 72Y.  Otherwise, it's a ton more information and lots of mapscans

Also updated is the VA 341 to VA 360 page -  http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va341-360.htm

In addition to more info and scans, highlights include:
Extremely rare images of a VA 345 cutout and a VA 353 cutout
I nailed down where the original VA 355 actually was
Where else has VA 354 south ended?
What is the connection between otherwise seemingly unrelated routes VA 345, VA 357, and VA 380?  The answer has an interesting back story.

well, VA has not been averse to oddish route numbers: US 17-1, anybody?

I do wonder when VA changed from embossed-border steel cutouts to completely printed ones, all of which I have seen are on aluminum (but there may have been a steel variant as well)

my guess is the early 50s?

That Elko Tract story is VERY intriguing! If I can gather up the courage I might have to go out into the woods and check out the remnants of the "lost city".

Did you know US 501's original Buena Vista endpoint was south of the current terminus?  Or that VA 31 once ran through the historic Jamestown Settlement?

Last year Will discovered a VA 301 shield in Jarratt. When I was there in April of this year it was still up.

"VA 28 is just one of two original 1918 routes to remain, although none of the 1918 defined route is still part of VA 28 today."

It might be worth mentioning 5/35, which survived with only a single systemic renumbering.

I was just out at the Cartersville Bridge today. The south side had a No Trespassing sign at the boat dock. Of course we ignored it :p

Greetings -

A new content update is available at Virginia Hwys Project.

New superpages have been created for each of the state routes 16-24, 29-30, and 45-48.

Additionally, back before Froggie went on his current Naval cruise, we spent some time at the Virginia State Library taking photo scans of various VDOT county atlases.  As a result, I have added a couple hundred mapscans to the site clarifying routes, etc.  There are way too many to list, but some interesting ones are as follows:

New routes previously undiscovered: US 60 SPUR, VA 38Y, VA 61Y, a short-lived VA 101 in the early 60s, VA 227Y, VA 301 ALT, and VA 307Y. Additionally, a routing through Bristol from 1967-84 for US 421 was discovered

Obscure/short-lived routes that had no map documentation previously:
US 1 ALT in Petersburg; US 11 ALT in Dublin; US 58 Alt in central Suffolk; Where VA 117Y actually was in Salem; VA 125 in Danville info; both VA 135Y routes in Green Bay; VA 168Y before it became the Williamsburg VA 163; VA 222Y; The Norfolk VA 226 from the 40s; proof that VA 229 extended south of Port Royal; VA 230Y; proof that VA 232 originally didn't connect to US 11; VA 239 on Mercury Blvd; the useless and short-lived VA 297 #1; VA 299Y; VA 318 state capitol; VA 322 in central williamsburg; VA 328 and VA 357 in Hampton; VA 361 on the Eastern Shore; proof that VA 380 was a renumbering of <i>current</i> VA 345; VA 399, VA 404

MUCH more info and mapscans are available, with plenty of surprises...

Greetings-

The Virginia Highways Page Cutout Gallery has been revamped and greatly expanded.

Now you can find all your favorite cutouts in one place as it includes the gribblenation.com, Michael Summa cutouts, and millenniumhwy.net cutouts.  In addition I have emptied out my stash of cutouts not previously published.  I also to the extent possible stated the status of each location in the field.

In the gallery a "new" banner means a picture of a cutout that I do not believe has been published on the internet in the last several years, if ever.  We also dropped the SimpleViewer format and returned the gallery to the traditional VHP gallery format.

Highlights include the only US 340 ALT (1955-62) picture I've ever seen and the pre-1974 US 15-VA 20 duplex.  Also, if you haven't seen the 341-360 route pages too recently, the gallery also includes cutouts for VA 345 and VA 353.

I'm glad that I-60 shield got mentioned and GSV captured it, because it was gone by the time I had a chance to go back and capture it (I saw it in November 2013, it was gone by January 2014).
