just put up a bunch of photos here:

can anyone tell me what is under these green patches?

my guess is 410, as one section of 167 was numbered 410 until 1973, and this sign is surely that old.  However, why would the route be signed north?

also, which sign is older on the top gantry?  One on the left, or one on the right?

I don't have any idea - I thought 518 was 518 since the Great Renumbering and surely these signs aren't older than 1964!

as a bonus, who wants to identify an airplane silhouette?  It sure isn't any of the Boeing 7-series, which would be most appropriate for Seattle.

That's very interesting. In the past year or so it looks like they've gone through and patched over some of the faded shields. I know for sure that I-405 gantry had the old narrow ugly Washington I-405 shield, and that was patched over sometime while I lived there.

The 167s have had patches on them as long as I can remember, and I'd guess your 410 hypothesis is correct. It's also possible that WSDOT just patched over the old shield with a new one, explaining the "North." That would be my best guess.

Hate to break it to you, but these signs are now gone, as of 2 months ago.

No, keep it secret -- we don't want to lose it!
