A positive example: this station in North Reading, MA is called either "the Tuesday station" or "the Thursday station"; I forget which, since it's been so long. It's 5¢ cheaper on that day (actually 4 or 6; their prices always end in an odd digit), cheap in general even if it's not that day, and full serve (full serve stations are typically more expensive here). While it doesn't matter to me, it's also the only station I know of where the difference between grades 87 and 89 is still only 10¢.

It's caused backups on Route 28.

My grampa worked for GM for 40 years, so of course I grew up knowing "Found On Road Dead" and "Fix Or Repair Daily". I've also heard "F*cker Only Runs Downhill", and one that I won't repeat because it's positive for the brand.

To this day, my biggest regret was buying that Explorer in '94; I didn't feel safe in it at all. And being a GM loyalist myself, I switched to a Tahoe after four years or so.

What are some common nicknames for retail businesses?

Some of the more popular ones are...

• McDonald's -> Mickey D's
• Wal-Mart -> Wally World
• Target -> Tar-Zhay (think of Target with a French accent)
• Kroger (grocery) -> Kay-Roger's

I live in Cincinnati, where Kroger is headquartered, and I have NEVER heard anyone call it Kay-Rogers.  A lot of people do call it KrogerS, which drives some other people crazy.

I like to pronounce Kroger like if I'm pronouncing it like Roger.

I also hate when people put an S on Kroger, Krystal, etc.
