Are you referring to the black-and-white "I-60" shield that existed on Ocean View Ave?

Mapmikey

Nope...

An actual I-60 shield on I-64:

A new photo gallery showing numerous views of the I-495 beltway and some nearby roads (I-66, I-95 Springfield, I-70S, US 50 Bowie) from the mid to late 1960s.  Included is a US 240 BGS... http://www.vahighways.com/495vintage/index.htm

I love the old photos. If you're open to a suggestion, I think some people who don't drive these roads all the time might find it interesting if you were able to link to current pictures of the same locations (whether on AARoads or elsewhere), just to give a "Then and Now" sense. The differences in some locations even just from 2005 to today can be astonishing, let alone back in the 1960s. (I know this would probably take a long time to implement, so it's just a thought.)

Greetings...

An appreciable content update to the Virginia Highways Project is available:

A US 33-VA 33 transition gallery page has been created to attempt to present all the evidence I have on where the transition points have been over the years.  includes a number of pictures from 1940 to the 1970s:
http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/us33va33.htm

A new superpage has been created for VA 337 and 337 ALT including more info and mapscans:
http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va337.htm

New routes have been identified:
I-864, US 11Y #1, US 29 ALT #5, US 360 ALT #4, US 460 Bus (Grundy), VA 9Y, VA 10A, VA 13Y #1, VA 23 TEMP, VA 25Y, VA 27 ALT, VA 31Y, VA 33Y #1, VA 42Y, VA 109Y, VA 254 ALT, VA 284 #1, VA 323 TEMP, VA 336 #3, VA 337 ALT #2, VA 406 #2, VA 408 #2, VA 410 #2, VA 411 #2, VA 412 #2, and VA 464

Numerous other smaller route entry updates have occurred.  It turns out that when one skims the roughly 100,000 pdf pages of the CTB Minutes there are things that are missed.  Thanks to NE2 who found a lot the new routes or info for other routes or asked me questions that caused me to find additional information.

A full list of the changes is here:
http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/changes%20feb2015.htm

Also of interest is a 1939 VDOT study to decommission primary routes.  Quite a number of these segments are still in the system.

Part 2 of the Virginia Highways Photo Galleries...

Old Signs of Virginia has been updated with 170 new photos...

Highlights include old Richmond area BGSs; a ton of button copy signage from Pennsylvania and New Jersey; a blue and red interstate business shield in Ohio; a few older signs from British Columbia too

Check it out at http://www.vahighways.com/oldsigns/oldsigns.htm

Something that occurred to me Wednesday morning regarding old signs is that the majority of the signs over the I-395 reversible lanes are likely to be replaced in the coming years as part of the HO/T lane project. Most of them aren't terribly interesting, but there's a 1970s-era "All Traffic" sign next to an old-style "Do Not Enter" sign at Turkeycock, and the northbound BGSs at the exit for Route 27 are peeling. Long way of saying, enjoy the old signs while they're still there.

A content update at Virginia Highways Project...

New routes documented for the first time: US 220 ALT #1 in Roanoke (includes pics from 50+ years ago) and VA 287 #1

Scan-proof for the following:  VA 284 #1 prior to becoming US 60 when it bypassed today's VA 13; VA 88 in Richmond

The VA 281-300 page was broken into individual pages with more mapscans and info, especially routes 284-287; historic pics on VA 297 and 297 Bus pages

The 1951 Official VDOT Route Log was added.

Many thanks to Nate Rathjen for going to the Special Collections at UVa's Library for the 1951 route log and the 1933 county mapscans in this update...

I might have to dig through my photos to see if I have anything you're still missing (namely photos of VA 161 and VA 356's endpoints).

I know I have more photos of US 311's termini that Mike's welcome to if he wants -- search my Flickr page for the 2014 Hampton Roads trip, Day 1.

The Virginia Highways Project has now revamped its Waysides Page.

Included are new images and historic images of several waysides.

Plenty of new information about many waysides including pages scanned from a 1950ish VDOT publication documenting the waysides around then with some data on their formation, upkeep, etc.

New waysides identified: "turnout" (US 11); Crab Orchard (US 19); Leland-Madison (VA 20); Pendleton (US 33); South Boston (US 501)

Location discovered for these: Mecklenburg (US 1), Madison (US 29), "Wayside" (US 29), Bland (VA 42), Mariners Museum (US 60), Cleburne (VA 100), Rich Creek (US 460), Montvale (US 460), Oxford Furnace (US 460), "Wayside" (US 460), Grassy Creek (US 460)

Special thanks to Steve Yonts who found the Bland Wayside which was not for the weak-legged picnic fan...

While researching this update I discovered that UVA has a couple boxes of photos from the 1930s of waysides.  I will have to get over there and check that out sometime.  Until then, check out the revamped page - http://www.vahighways.com/waysides/waysides.htm

Greetings --

The Virginia Highways Project has updated some route content...

New routes now posted in Virginia:  US 15 ALT in Farmville (thanks to Mapcat) and VA 167 in the Roanoke area (thanks to Thing342).  Additionally, a potential US 301 Business in Emporia may have existed...a photo has turned up of I-95 being co-signed as 301 BYPASS around Emporia (thanks Chris Curley).

While updating VA 167 I went ahead and turned all the routes from 161-180 into superpages, with a fair number of additional mapscans and some photos...

Check it all out at...

FYI, when I tried to go to vahighways.com on my tablet, it defaulted to https://m.vahighways.com/ and prompted an insecure site warning. If you click accept the risk, then it loads a page that looks like spam: "Mixer for Media iframes"

This is not a problem on the PC, but if you type in the url https://m.vahighways.com/ and click accept the risk, you can access the same Mixer for Media iframes page.

Greetings!

The Virginia Highways Project has just completed a huge update!

The AASHO database has been poured over and items related to Virginia have been incorporated into the site.

27 new US route designations were found (including bannered routes) , 2 new interstate designations and 1 new Y state route as well.

All US route families were broken into individual pages with the additional information and more mapscans.

How does US 221 relate to US 9, US 33, US 86, US 360 and US 460?
Where was the first US 33/VA 33 transition point?
How is it that US 17-1 is NOT the weirdest designation considered for that corridor?
Did Virginia ever request an official US Y route?
What were the mystery US route corridors?

Many terrific nuggets to be found...

The AASHO database also had a draft of the 1933 great renumbering, and there are some differences.  Routes affected were VA 9, VA 10, VA 25, VA 40, VA 48, VA 52, VA 61, VA 86 and VA 109.

Also all the state routes 321-340 were broken into individual pages with more info/mapscans.

All can be found at the Virginia Hwys Page

Fantastic work.  That's crazy about Virginia's proposal for US-86.  However, I was hoping that you would update the recent changes to VA-314 in Blacksburg.  Note that your link to VA-501 for the information about VA-9(#2) is incorrect, as your information for VA-501 is still on the superpage for VA-500 to VA-525.

By the way, some of the West Virginia annex pages are still down.  None of the Interstate links work, nor do the series between US-19A and Spur US-52.

i appreciate the feedback...

What changes to VA 314 do you mean?

The last adjustment I have on the VA 314 page is this:  In Dec 2017 (aaroads forum), VA 314 was rerouted on Southgate Dr to a new alignment to meet US 460 at a newly constructed DDI interchange south of the previous location

Thanks for the link notice on the VA 9 page...will fix this evening.

The West Virginia pages you cite have not yet been written...perhaps I can tackle that next...

WillWeaverRVA

Great stuff. Just one minor quibble: the header on the VA 324 page shows VA 322's information.

What changes to VA 314 do you mean?

VA-314 includes a disconnected spur in the northwest quadrant of the VA-412 Prices Fork interchange with the US-460 Bypass in Blacksburg.  That spur has recently been extended a bit further north alongside the US-460 Bypass to an industrial area that appears to be a newly constructed road maintenance facility owned and operated by Virginia Tech.  Back in January, I was back-checking myself prior to posting VA-314 in the "Clinched on Foot" thread when I found that this has been "unclinched" for quite some time.  But I had walked all of VA-314 prior to the construction of the Southgate Drive interchange.  You can get more details here:  https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=30928.msg2703120#msg2703120

Random note: per Bill Manning on FB, VA 281 is now fully posted, and in the correct directions (the error signs that had VA 281 on Charles City Rd are now gone). Not clear if shields have been added on the BGS on VA 895 that had empty spaces.
