2023 Rand McNally Road Atlas
« on: April 22, 2022, 12:52:52 PM »

Listed on Amazon with a release date of May 2 (but, oddly, April 29 for the large-scale version). The product page has zoomable images of the pages for AR -- with no Bella Vista bypass?!, MT, Detroit, and the central part of Ontario.

Makes you wonder if they're just photos from 2022 (or possibly an earlier edition???)

According to Jim K. Georges, aka Freeway Jim, the 2023 atlas was delivered to his home today from Amazon. The Rand McNally site has a press release dated yesterday (April 26) saying the atlases are now available and that updates for the 2023 edition include:
- The inclusion of mileage-based exit numbers to the Hutchinson River Parkway in New York,
- Updated state population totals and rankings,
- And, the addition of several state parks, including Fishers Peak in Colo. and Machicomoco in Va., as well as Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary in Wis.
Editions available are listed at: https://store.randmcnally.com/2023-rand-mcnally-road-atlases.html

Only Barnes and Noble still says the atlas is only available for pre-order. The orders won't be shipped until May 11.

I got my 2023 Rand McNally Road Atlas from Amazon yesterday, and here are some of my observations: On the Modesto, CA inset there is a new CA 132 expressway of some sort leading westward from the CA 99 freeway. In Connecticut, CT 9, CT 11 and CT 72 now feature mileage-based exit numbers. In Florida, the Suncoast Parkway (FL 589) is now complete to FL 44 and the Wekiva Parkway (FL 429) is nearly completed to Interstate 4 at FL 417. interstate 69 in Indiana is now complete past Martinsville. The MD 32 freeway is now shown as completely freeway to Interstate 70. NC 74 is complete between US 311 and US 158, and Interstate 840 is nearly complete, though the US 421 Salem Parkway still has former Business 40's exit numbers. The Kickapoo Turnpike is complete, but the OK 301 (Chickasaw Turnpike), OK 312 (Cimarron Turnpike Spur), and OK 375 (Indian Nation Turnpike) designations are not shown. PA 576 is complete to Interstate 79. The TX 99 Grand Parkway is complete to Interstate 10. More of US 89 and UT 154 is shown as freeway, and the UT 7 freeway is longer. VA 164 is complete to Interstate 264. Finally, the Center Leg Freeway is shown as Interstate 195 and the Southeast Freeway is a rerouted Interstate 395, even though as far as I know, both freeways are still signed as 395 and 695.

Is the 2023 edition available at Walmart yet (for its usual cheap price)?

Can't answer that. It's available as of yesterday at Barnes and Noble. Got to check it out and was disappointed, especially with the North Carolina state and inset maps, much is unchanged from the 2022 edition, notably:
1. No soon to be signed interstates shown-I-42, I-587, I-885.
2. The W-S Salem Beltway is still shown to be under construction from US 421 to US 158 (though shows the section from US 158 to US 311 as complete).
3. Business 40 exit numbers still along US 421.
4. Winston-Salem Beltway construction not shown on state map (though the NC 540 extension to I-40 is now shown).

They also had the 2023 Michelin Atlas which is not too much better for NC. They have Future I-785 marked along US 29 which is years off, but no future or new I-shields for soon to be signed future routes noted above.

The only recent trip I've made to a local Walmart that had any RMcN atlases, was one that just the 2022 large-print.  No 2022 or 2023 regulars.  And the large-print, while having a lower-price Walmart-imprinted version, didn't have the store directory that the regular RMcN atlases have.  I was tempted to buy it, but I feel like I can hold out for a Walmart regular version somewhere.

Updated population figures included: notably
 - Charleston now listed in largest city in SC (previously Columbia)
 - Nashville now listed in largest city in TN (previously Memphis)
 - Huntsville now listed as largest city in Alabama (previously Birmingham)

In the cases of Nashville and Charleston, their font sizes remain smaller than Memphis and Columbia respectively despite having larger populations.

I got a 2023 RMcN Walmart regular version, with store directory, yesterday at the Walmart in West Monroe LA. Huge price increase -- $14.97 for 2023, compared to $7.97 for the 2022 edition -- though I don't know the price for the non-Walmart versions.

Whoa...wonder why the price skyrocketed.  Walmart's version has always been dirt cheap.

They're showing the southern extension of Québec's A35 as under construction.

(I don't know that I'll buy another Rand McNally atlas.   My eyes are maturing, and I'm finding the National Geographic-branded road atlas easier to ogle.  And since satnavs mean I use road atlases more for ogling than for actual travel planning....)

The advertising value to Walmart of the atlas has likely shrunken considerably, so RandMac is probably getting less cash from the Waltons, so they need to jack up the price.

That's accurate. Autoroute 35 is under construction between its current (temporary) terminus at Saint-Sebastien and Route 133 north of Philipsburg. Completion of Autoroute 35 to the Vermont border is scheduled for late 2023.

Here is a GSV of construction at the Route 202 overpass in the summer of 2021:  https://www.google.com/maps/@45.1005526,-73.098013,3a,75y,99.02h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sCoRX2MlpOw4jaRRZ0zr21A!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DCoRX2MlpOw4jaRRZ0zr21A%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D102.67978%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192

And work going on where Autoroute 35 will eventually tie into Route 133 near Philipsburg, still in the very early stages of construction, also in August 2021:  https://www.google.com/maps/@45.0614485,-73.0680637,3a,40.6y,244.33h,88.35t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s_eTKpl3v5QkSws2navwkKg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

I picked up a copy today at my local Barnes and Noble and have noticed that the Vermont inset still shows the milepoint exit numbers even though Vermont cheated with the conversion. In Massachusetts, some of the exit numbers are incorrect. Exit 106 on the Mass Pike is shown as Exit 107 as well as Exit 127 in Newton being shown as Exit 128. The US 3/I-95 interchange is shown as Exit 70 and not 72.

Thumbed through the 2023 version this weekend - they still have not updated the cities index with 2020 census figures.  Even if they had, I'm not sure they would go the extra mile and coordinate text sizes with cities that have crossed a population threshold, going either way.  They certainly haven't with Oklahoma.

It's still weird that there is no more Gousha.  I liked their graphical approach to fold-outs and atlases.
