State welcome signs at places other than state borders
« on: April 29, 2022, 03:06:20 PM »

This can usually be found at airports when it's done.

Example:

https://www.google.com/maps/@35.2291374,-80.9418783,3a,15.8y,41.16h,87.46t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sfEdNOr9gGS6RY3l_wZ9KNg!2e0!5s20170401T000000!7i13312!8i6656

I was curious if there's examples at points of entry other than airports (e.g. train stations). I know there's a thread somewhere out there that details a few airports that do this.

This doesn't have to apply to state welcome signs either, if you find a county or municipal welcome sign or anything else like that feel free to post it.

It no longer exists (and some would say too close to a border anyway), but the old Minnesota welcome sign on MN 36 was where the westbound lanes split off of MN 95 south of Stillwater, so MN 36 traffic had already been in Minnesota for a few miles before seeing the welcome sign, and those coming down MN 95 hadn't left it at all before seeing the sign.

A very well known municipal example is the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign" when entering the city!

Do state "welcome centers" count? There are plenty of these in California, otherwise in the Bay Area I haven't seen them in the biggest cities. In multiple places at Daly City, there are welcome signs that say that Daly City is the "gateway to the peninsula."

I know in Santa Cruz, CA, one of the first businesses when going on CA 1 southbound is a pizza restaurant and it has a mural that says "Upper Crust welcomes you to Santa Cruz"

How is that a state welcome sign?

Is that MDOT welcome center still there on US 41's east approach to Marquette, MI?

By that I meant a sign welcoming you to a municipality or whatever far away from where you'd entered it, rather than any welcome sign that's some distance from a state line.

In any case, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is 4 miles away from the actual Las Vegas city limits, and is actually located in Paradise, so it probably counts.

The Texas welcome center at Waskom, Texas, includes a scaled down replica Texas welcome sign. My guess is it's so you can take a picture with it instead of the giant one on the freeway at the actual state line.

This is sort of notable because it's actually the design that was used in the 90s, not the present-day version of the sign. The only difference is that the older one has "Welcome to Texas" set in Kaufmann, while the present-day one uses Brush Script MT (which comes pre-installed on Windows).

Did Paradise actually incorporate, or is it still unincorporated Clark County?

Wikipedia says it is still unincorporated.

Yes, it's still there, but it doesn't have a Welcome to Pure Michigan sign. Ditto the welcome centers in Clare, St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.

This doesn't really count, but I was surprised to see that the Welcome to Mississippi sign on US-49 across the river from Helena, Arkansas, is more than two miles from the border.

Kentucky installed a bunch of welcome signs at small general aviation airports sometime between 2004 and 2007. I'm not sure how many of them are still standing.

I don't think any 'Welcome to New Jersey' sign is at the state border, due to most locations being bridges over water.  If there is a Welcome sign, it's usually located a few miles inland.

Like what other states have done, they did place one at the I-295 Welcome Center after coming off of the Delaware Memorial Bridge for your selfie pleasure.  https://goo.gl/maps/XnuHSdxYTMuK9gyo8

Nah.  The sign has been there since about 1959.  Relatively recently they built a parking lot to help assist with those stopping to take a picture.

Thinking about the Las Vegas sign yielded this possibly-interesting question–is anyone aware of any state welcome signs officially posted outside the boundaries of the state they welcome you to? (That is, you see them before you enter the state in question?)

The Rosslyn Metrorail station in Virginia has a standard highway-style welcome sign on the lower platform mounted to the wall by where the front of the train stops, although that might not count because it’s the first stop you encounter on those lines after leaving DC.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for because it's a technicality, but this Iowa welcome sign on southbound I-35 is in Minnesota (the bridge is the state line).

I always liked New Jersey’s Welcome Sign on Route 495 several miles in near the exit for Route 3. Wonder if the construction workers rehabilitating the North Bergen Viaduct put it back after the work got done?

There's a sign, a big one too, welcoming people to Minnesota on I-90 eastbound in South Dakota. The Minnesota Welcome Center is also in South Dakota.

I don't know if this is exactly the same, but due to the abundance of border crossings near US 1 in northern Maine, there are many "Welcome to Maine" signs along the highway- obviously these are intended for travelers from Canada, but it is slightly amusing if you're just driving along US 1 and get welcomed to Maine over and over.

Wow, great example!  This also means the Minnesota state flag flies in South Dakota there.

Those aren't actually welcome signs, though. (They do appear at the state lines too, but the actual welcome sign has a different design.)

How about as close to the state border as practicable?  I-77 between Virginia and West Virginia.  The border is near the middle of the 5412-foot long East River Mountain Tunnel, or better said, at the top of East River Mountain on VA-598 just about 4 miles up (and much further away on the West Virginia side).
