Duluth had a planned US 61 expressway that was planned to replace the then-abandoned railroad through Lakeside, but was never built and the railroad not removed. Eventually the Lake Superior Railroad Museum purchased the railroad and converted it into a popular passenger touring operation as the North Shore Scenic Railroad, so there's a gap where MN 61 follows a residential street between I-35 and the current expressway.

Superior had a proposed US 2 bypass where it would have continued south from the end of the existing Bong Bridge freeway near the current rail yard on the west side.
