I have never seen them with route numbers until this thread. The numbers look weird to me.

Huh. I just assumed that putting them on was the standard, since most of the pictures in this thread had markers with the numbers, and that the one without numbers was a newer marker going away from that practice.

To be fair, I didn't know this class of highways even existed until I saw this thread.

That was 922-1A back in 2012; an error or re-numbering of routes?

Probably an error.

The numbers aren't suffixes, the refer to the section numbers. AR 922-1A means AR 922, Section 1A.

I take pictures of road signs, that's about it.

General rule of thumb: Just stay in the "Traffic Control" section of the forum and you'll be fine.
