Man did the Reds fall apart last night.  They had a 4-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings and lose 7-4 with 4 errors and giving up 5 unearned runs!

The Giants blew a 4-0 lead as well as the Braves stole a win from the Giants after getting that double-play with the bases loaded in the 10th and Ankiel's shot into McCovey Cove in the 11th.  I still can't believe Farnsworth didn't blow it.

Man, I thought the Braves were done last night. I think we match up well with the Giants. We just need to get our defense together, because it sucks. Conrad and Gonzalez, especially, make a lot of errors.

The Phillies are the strongest team on the NL side. They might be the strongest team in the playoffs. But Texas looks very good, even though they lost today.

Brooks Conrad doesn't need to play another -- it may be extreme but who cares -- Major League game. He's horrible at playing defense. That last error he made last night was a back-breaker.

That's my point: he shouldn't be in the field. He should, like you were saying, be put back in his pinch-hitting role. It's also Bobby Cox's fault as much as it is  Conrad's; Bobby keeps putting him out there. Glaus could play third, while Infante could play second.

I'm hopeful that we'll make it to the World Series, but Philly might be too strong.

But Bobby did take Conrad out... and put Glaus at third and Infante and second, so we'll see if the defense picks up.

Yeah- I don't know. Putting the corpse of Troy Glaus at 3rd is a pretty ballsy move. I'm not sure if it's going to be any upgrade over Conrad (the errors may not be there, but I suspect Glaus won't even get anywhere near the balls Conrad would have, preventing him from even getting an error- prompting the great debate "Is it better to not catch the ball at all or catch the ball and drop it?"), but I guess the change needed to be made.  I'd have probably just put Diory Hernandez out there or just flipped Conrad and Infante to see if a change of position worked, but I hope this works out (with the Reds out I want them to win the NL)

The Infante-Conrad flip happened in that last Philly-Braves series of the year, with the same result. Hernandez might've been a good alternative as well. My dad was talking about Hernandez as well, but I don't remember him (Hernandez) off hand.

1) Story goes that Cliff Lee wasn't interested in signing a long-term deal. He wanted to go into Free Agency after this year.
Phillies wanted an ace they could keep.
2) Phillies thought Cole Hamels was going to be lights out, or at least Roy Halladay Jr. all season, not just the last 3 months
3) What you know you need, while in the midst of a "job" is different than what you think you'll need when you prepare to start a job. Going back to point 1, Phillies thought Hamels & Halladay would be enough, with their starting 8, to win the division and beyond. After being a .500 club with the starting infield starting together only 6 times by the trade deadline, the Phillies realized they needed another pitcher. Thus enters Oswalt.
4) Over the 127 year history of Philadelphia Phillies baseball, the last 4 years are the exception, not the rule for this team.

he has this unnerving habit of doing that.

I'm surprised he's been with 4 teams in the last two years (and possibly will sign with a fifth this offseason).  I figure though, he can command a 6-7 year contract that will pretty much take him to the end of his effective career.  (He's 33.)

I haven't seen one second of the Phillies/Giants games due to the stinking Cablevision/FOX dispute sadly. I've given up in the chances that the Yanks will be in the WS in 2010. I just need the Giants to take Philly to the clubhouse

The bigger question to me is how did Seattle possibly get him so cheap? There wasn't even a bidding war from what I understand, Seattle just popped on the radar and had him. All they gave up was a decent pitching prospect that Seattle was confining to the bullpen (a controversial decision), another decent but ways off starting pitching prospect, and a future fourth outfielder. No top prospects had to change hands- all three of those guys were somewhat interesting but none were a future franchise cornerstone, and then they managed to flip him in June for about 1.5x what they got for him (with Lee having half as many starts left on his contract).

That was a weird situation. As a Mariners fan, it was awesome to be able to watch Cliff Lee pitch for a few months- he really was the best- I can think of very few in baseball who are more interesting to watch than Cliff Lee. I'd give anything to see him in a Seattle uniform again, but from a practical standpoint that doesn't make any sense.
