The proposal is still in the "get the ball rolling" phase. Officials say they still need to design the project along with an environmental studies process and public review.
If finalized, we won't see construction completed until 2026 with an up to almost 25 million dollar price tag.

Yup, we are in a big fat hurry to make traffic hurry aren't we? *sigh*

Pismo Beach, Los Osos, and the area from Morro Bay north through Cambria get a lot of traffic coming over from the San Joaquin Valley; those are the closest beach areas that are reasonably warm during summer (after the fog lifts!) to Bakersfield, Fresno, and the other cities in between; it's close enough for a weekend or even a long day trip. And that segment of US 101 has only received a few spot improvements since the '60's, while recreational traffic -- in addition to that attributable to the growth of Cal Poly SLO -- has increased substantially. That road was falling apart in the '80's; it comes as no surprise that attention is now being directed to its issues.
