Title: Tchoutacabouffa River
Post by: ethanhopkin14 on July 19, 2016, 09:35:54 AM
This may have been address before, but Google Maps shows the Tchoutacabouffa River labeled as the Biloxi River.  Does anyone know why?

This is an issue with many GIS datasets: water polygons are notoriously mislabled.  Especially along coastal areas, the GIS only "sees" a big spidery polygon of water, until someone is intentional about instructing it to recognize the geographical boundary that defines where one toponym ends and another begins.  Unless that's been done, the GIS will often associate the entire polygon with just one of the toponyms.  Many data providers don't think it's worth the investment to correct this.  For another example, use Google to check Beaufort SC, and all the surrounding waterways labeled "Harbor River".

For accurate water toponyms, I suggest viewing the topos on something like mapper.acme.com

The lake to the east of Sugar Island is NOT Lake Huron:  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Sugar+Island/@46.4278308,-84.3404923,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x4d36468ef5b46d3b:0x7decf19ba2efb365!8m2!3d46.5032439!4d-84.1769858?hl=en
