The Kansas Department of Transportation April 22, 2020 Letting WILL remain as scheduled with possible procedural changes to accommodate public building restrictions due to the COVID-19 emergency. We will be in contact and keep you updated as details become available. Thanks.

Most likely, this means that the bids will be opened on a conference call like was done in March. KDOT did indeed go for the conference call again for the April lettings.

Any word on start dates for the HMA mill and overlay projects on 435 from Midland Drive to K-10 and K-10 from 435 to the west? If my office ever reopens, it would make my commute a lot smoother.

Any word on start dates for the HMA mill and overlay projects on 435 from Midland Drive to K-10 and K-10 from 435 to the west? If my office ever reopens, it would make my commute a lot smoother.

It looks like it was in the April letting, but hasn't been awarded yet. It did receive two bids.
I asked KDOT on Twitter, and they confirmed the 435 project will begin the second week of June. They didn't say anything about the K-10 project, though.

Those signs really do leave much to be desired.  Especially since part of US 56/Shawnee Mission Parkway east of I-35 is expressway-grade, and US 69/Metcalf Avenue north of US 56 is an expressway.

I'd love to see overhead signage for the US 56/69/169 cloverleaf, but something tells me KDOT isn't likely to go that far, especially since they've let the southbound US 69 freeway lane drop at 135th Street go without overhead signs for all these decades (sorry for beating a dead horse, but it's so close to home that it constantly annoys me, and I've seen my share of incidents and close calls at that location).

Not to go too much farther off-topic, but it bugs me that in MoDOT's rebuild/expansion of 435 from State Line to the Triangle, they didn't use EXIT ONLY on the overhead signs for the auxiliary lanes between exits. They also should have replaced a couple of old signs over the westbound lanes approaching State Line that are delaminating. One is an advanced sign for "State Line Road / 103rd St" has a centered exit tab.

I will be curious to see what KDOT installs on Shawnee Mission Parkway at Metcalf. I doubt they'll install overheads for fear of making it seem like more of a high-speed freeway than it is, but the small, all-caps signs they have now may as well not be there at all. Are there engineering documents for that project that show what they'll install?

Federal-Aid - State Highway Projects:

Wonder when they'll announce a start date on this. Maybe they don't want K-7, K-10, and I-435 all under construction at the same time?

Can someone explain what the hell I'm looking at, because to me, it looks like they're making the signs worse in some ways, and failing to improve them in other ways: https://kdotapp.ksdot.org/burconsmain/contracts/Proposals/Plans/520082121p.pdf

(1) No advance turn-off sign for following NB US 69 from EB US 56 to NB Metcalf Avenue.
(2) No advance turn-off sign for following SB US 69 from SB Metcalf Avenue to WB US 56.
(3) No signs for US 69 in advance of the cloverleaf on WB US 56.
(4) Still no sign on SB US 169 approaching US 56 telling you which way to turn to follow SB US 169.
(5) Still no advance guide sign for the Roe Avenue/Johnson Drive exit from WB US 56.  The new sign still looks like "too little, too late."  Oh, but it will be mixed-case now!  Whoopee!!

The only significant improvement I can see is that they're finally adding an advance turn-off sign for following NB US 169 from EB US 56 to NB Rainbow Boulevard and placing the point-of-turn sign in advance of the intersection instead of on the signal pole.

Changing the sign for the second exit on SB US 69/Metcalf Avenue to read "Metcalf Lane" instead of "Johnson Drive" is a minor improvement.

But if I wasn't clear earlier, overall, I'm very unimpressed.  KDOT is way overrated when it comes to signage (seriously, how did they manage to screw up something this simple twice: https://goo.gl/maps/3iqheHBFPA4gEuZK7).  Still wishing NJDOT would take over and put overhead signs on the arterial highways, since it's one of the few DOTs that's good at that.  Unfortunately, all we get of NJDOT is this little goof (and a few others like it): https://goo.gl/maps/zinsqgRWxzqxYhrP9

Some of the cleanest signing I have seen from any state DOT has come from an agency in the Midwest where the same person had overall responsibility for guide signs on freeways and expressways for 30 years.  He asked his subordinates to have prints of proposed work available for inspection on a Friday so that he could take them home, spread them out on a worktable in his basement, go over them with a fine-tooth comb, and return them with detailed comments the following Monday.

KDOT, on the other hand, has a fair amount of turnover in the state signing engineer position.  The person who held it in 2007 is not the same person who held it in 2013, and the latter now works for an engineering firm in the Topeka area.  I think it has been probably decades since an engineer could make a career out of, or develop a sense of professional pride in, being KDOT's point person for guide signing on high-capacity roads.

Back when we still had access to the KDOT FTP server, I would occasionally see signing plans that had been marked up for review.  Some of the suggested changes seemed to me reflective of a mindset that does not eat and drink good signing.  For example, a consultant working on a project in Independence proposed a conventional-road guide sign with the destination in Series E Modified mixed-case, and the KDOT reviewer (presumably the state signing engineer) insisted that this be changed to Series C mixed-case, thus making the sign less legible.

In the fall of 2013, KDOT advertised a freeway guide signing update for the KCK/Shawnee Mission area.  I identified a number of out-and-out errors ("Metropolitan" spelled as "Metrpolitan" on an interchange sequence sign on one sheet, references to "Donohoo" instead of "Donahoo" and "Wyandotte Co Park Lake" instead of "Wyandotte Co Lake Park" on another sheet).  I sent an email to the then state signing engineer, pointing out the errors.  I also described some other changes I thought would be advantageous, such as using a white ruled line to separate green and brown on signs that combined general destination and tourist information.  I never received a reply or acknowledgment.  It is only in the last half-hour that I have gone to the KDOT records vault and seen that the two sheets with errors were in fact fixed, the replacement sheets being dated twenty days after I sent the email.  None of the other changes I suggested was made.

I also sent someone at KDOT (don't remember which position) an email about the Metrpolitan/Donohoo issue and didn't receive a reply. But it was fixed, which is more than can be said for ODOT (who likewise ignores emails, then doesn't fix the issue).
