I've planned out the route and list of attractions (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=19DGdfAn6ELaAtM_9rGwlKxfOEZy14bwL&usp=sharing) for our tour. Printed copies will be provided.
Here's the Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/258937005286342) for the meet. RSVP there so I can estimate how many to expect, and feel free to invite your other roadgeek friends.
You can bring your own lunch to the picnic shelter of Harris Memorial Park (https://goo.gl/maps/CvkVJkiRNF23BLPP6) in Lee's Summit around 11:30, or just meet us for the tour that departs at 12:30.
Remember to keep at least six feet away from others whenever possible, and wear a mask when you can't keep that distance. It's currently required in all the areas we'll be touring (Kansas City, Missouri (https://www.kcmo.gov/home/showdocument?id=5225); Wyandotte County (https://www.wycokck.org/WycoKCK/media/Health-Department/Documents/Communicable%20Disease/COVID19/06272020LocalHealthOfficerOrderRegardingMasks.pdf); Eastern Jackson County (https://jacohd.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/recovery-plan_v7.5-1.pdf)).
I'll be hosting a road meet in Kansas City this October, with assistance from local Gene VanDusseldorp, on Saturday, October 17.
Highlights will include:
- The old and new Lewis and Clark Viaducts
- The elaborate 12th Street Viaduct
- Alphabet Loop
- The "divergabout" in Lee's Summit
I'll share the lunch meeting location and the tour route in late summer.
If its the 3rd Saturday then I am 100% in, Sunday I would be in St Louis for a toy show so this would work out great for me, my vote is the 16th :bigass:
I very much want to attend this meet if I can. My husband and I are supposed to be away on vacation from October 8 to 24, so I voted for Saturday, October 3. However, our vacation includes a European cruise which we very well might end up cancelling given all the madness that's going on in the world right now. So if this meet ends up happening later in October, there's a chance I still be able to attend after all.
I have been wanting to visit KC for awhile so I am considering it.
I might be able to do this one as it is very close by, though October is a busy month for me.
Being as I'm a "local," I'm in for any date. LMK if you need any assistance.
FYI, Gene is looking at October 17 for the rescheduled San Antonio Meet.
I'm hoping there's at least a two-week buffer between the San Antonio and Kansas City meets to help those of us who want to attend both if possible.
Why two weeks, specifically?

And see, here I was thinking that if they are on consecutive weekends I might be able to combine the two into one trip.
Meanwhile if they are 2-3 weeks apart I'd be more likely to pick only one of the two to attend.
The plot thickens.
Put SA on one weekend, KC on the next, us midwesterners can knock off two road meets with fun in between.

Not just old people! LOL
Several years ago (at least 12, when I was in my 40s), I did long-distance meets on back-to-back weekends. I think they were in Michigan and New York. After that, I decided I wouldn't do two long trips in a row like that anymore. Now, I did do back-to-back meets a few years later (Hampton Roads and Nashville), but the latter was a reasonably short drive.

For me, the issue is not wanting to be away from my husband and cat for that many consecutive days. I would rather be gone 6 or 7 days for one trip, come home for 7 or 8 days, and then go on a separate trip for, say, 4 or 5 days... as opposed to being away from home for, say, 12 consecutive days in one shot. Maybe I'd feel differently if I lived on the East Coast and was wanting to drive to both of these meets, but being in Michigan, I'm close enough where I'd much prefer to do these trips separately. But that's just me. :)
Unlike some, who've posted above :poke:, my job wouldn't allow me to use more than 11 days off in a row. That prohibits me from taking back-to-back weekends off to drive to Kansas City followed by San Antonio (or vice versa) from Central Ohio. So yeah, back-to-back weekends for roadmeets wouldn't help me.
Gene just announced on Facebook that the San Antonio meet will be October 3.
With San Antonio on October 3, and a rescheduled event eliminating the possibility of October 10/11 for me, I'm going to go ahead and choose the poll leader of October 17 as the Kansas City road meet date.
Plans for me are true for San Antonio. I can make a weekend out of this - but far into the future this is. No commitments yet. (FYI I won't respond to public events on Facebook due to their tracking schemes).
I won't be able to attend due to a prior commitment for that weekend.

Slight update on this - as my work has put us in a situation where PTO is at a premium now due to shutdowns and no comp time, I must choose one. I can't do that yet.

Now that school is virtual, I shouldn't have a problem heading up there at that time. It's a short drive.
I'm unavailable that week-end.
Funny thing is, I'll probably be in Missouri during the meet, but not near KC.
Got a near-last-minute schedule flip. I should be able to attend barring rain/plague.
I have not yet attended a road-related get-together this year. I had originally planned to go to San Antonio, but the timing is bad for me. It looks like Kansas City is my last chance for 2020.
As an aside, and speaking of 2020, I saw a report that a sportswriter for WSJ predicts that my beloved Detroit Lions will win it all this year. His logic? Everything else in 2020 has gone sideways (or worse), so what other conclusion can we expect? I hope he is right. I was 6 years old the last time the Lions went the distance. That was more than a decade before Super Anything.
Nickoli and Gene, I plan to be there. The likelihood that I actually attend is somewhat better than the odds that the hapless, hopeless Detroit Lions prevail this year.
Remember, the Lions winning the Super Bowl is one of the impending signs of the apocalypse.
I wish I could attend, but the family member I stay with when I'm in Kansas City is in her 90s, so I don't think it's a good idea to see her during the pandemic. Have fun, everyone!

I think today's game against the Bears proves we're probably safe from this doomsday for at least another NFL season.
Should I actually attend this meet, one of the things I will be doing while I'm up there is driving the existing alignment of US 24 east of downtown, before it is rerouted. Notice to Proceed on the signage project is 12/7/20.

Yes, it is being taken off of Independence Ave west of I-435, and will be routed on to I-435 and I-70 towards downtown.
See the 5th and 6th page of this document (https://route.transportation.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/50/2018/09/ALL-USRN-Applications-MO-OH-Annual-Meeting-2018.pdf). Aside from the re-routing itself, I found it a bit odd that MoDOT would use Google Maps over their own resources for this kind of task.

For those of you who are Facebook friends with James Schul, or are in some of the same FB road-related groups that he's in, he posted some photos of signs for that area that were being transported through the Dayton area. Some of them had I-435 and US 24 concurrent on the same sign. Wonder if those signs are part of this?
Interesting aside: Missouri produces (or used to produce) its own big guide signs. Wonder if they are now using contractors, like Kentucky does for its panel guide signs, or if the signage was part of a bigger contract?
External factors will almost certainly take me out of this one. Family events require me to be in 'burban Houston the week folowing (Oct 19-24 or so).

I'm definitely out of the meet. I'm undergoing physical therapy and seeing docs for my hip (no surgery planned - yet) and don't wish to risk contracting COVID at any point - I'm skipping local events for the same reason as my city's a hotspot too.

I went through on I-35 and US 71 but would have paid closer attention to whether US 24 was mentioned on the Independence Ave or I-70 exits.
Looking at the few photos I did take, it looks like signage has not changed over yet in that direction. But regardless of what the signs say, hasn't 24 officially been on 70 and 435 for a while now?
I'd be interested in going to this if I didn't have to work literally every day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays. But I also need to be rather judicious about how much I go out and how much I interact with other people IRL right now, because I live with someone who's in a high-risk category, and the last thing I want to do is put people at risk. I hope everyone has a good time, though!
That's something I haven't taken in to account- I live with older family members. Personally, I'm not be too worried, as I am only 17.
But being 17 brings up another issue: I've never gone further than 50 miles away from town driving by myself. I have my license, time, and money if needed. My issue lies in two questions:
-Will the participants of the meet want a 17 year old driving three hours away from home to meet strangers on the internet during a pandemic?
-Will my family want a 17 year old driving three hours away from home to meet strangers on the internet during a pandemic?

When I was 17, my parents were very protective of me and would not have allowed me, in a million years, to meet anyone in person from online. (Actually, the Internet was just starting to become popular when I was 17... although I did have the opportunity once in a while to participate in online chat rooms and whatnot.)
While you are probably too young to attend a road meet by yourself, there have been a few occasions where kids younger than you have attended road meets with either or both of their parents. Do you have a parent, or older sibling, who would be interested in supporting you in this hobby and bringing you to the meet? While the overwhelming majority of folks who attend road meets are at least in their mid twenties, we are a friendly group altogether and welcome attendees of all ages, but I would say for younger folks such as yourself, we would generally prefer that you not come alone but with a parent or older sibling. (I'm only speaking for myself but I'm guessing others would agree with me.)
Many of us in the roadgeek community have gotten to know each other quite well over the years, and maybe when you're older and have the ability/permission to attend a road meet by yourself, you'll feel more comfortable attending road meets.

My experience differs from A.J.'s, since I did socialize with older friends from the Internet at 17, and it was a fun experience. But I believe your guardians are legally responsible for your whereabouts until you turn 18, so whether they're present or not, getting their permission is key.

I'm glad to hear that you might be able to make it! I haven't discussed lodging with any of the other attendees, but I'll be staying at the Hampton Inn in downtown Kansas City (MO) Friday night and Saturday night.
The EconoLodge near North Kansas City Hospital (I-35 Exit #6) is halfway decent at a reasonable price. My wife has stayed there before during a convention. It's possible to find slightly better ones for additional cost.
Have fun, and drive safe. Post some pictures in this thread if you'd like. I've determined that it is not in my best interest to attend this meet for reasons I've already discussed. Instead, I am at a very different meet: a cross country meet. I look forward to attending future road meets once I am able to do so.
Field-check reports and other:
-MO 283 has been almost decommissioned. Oak Trafficway has been rebuilt north of 32nd Street, which is a KC/North KC city limit line. Most recent picture on GMSV shows a 283 shield on SB I-29, but not NB, and there are no longer shields pointing to 283 from 69 (Vivion Road). The 2017 state map marks "Spur 9" but the split with MO 9, and one subsequent shield, show 283.
-MO 152 has been dropped between I-35 and MO 291, similarly after a complete rebuild, as shown on the state map.
-MO 269 is shown on the state map as continuing to Front Street, but there are no signs south of MO 210 and the exit from MO 210 only points northward. I think, because of the map and the Missouri River bridge being probably key to its existence, this stays as is.
-MO 33 is greened-out from NB I-29 exit 20, and since there were no signs on the US 69 duplex, its end should be unambiguous now.
-Let's take a moment and laugh again at our bad timing regarding the opening of the Manchester Avenue ramp.
-My camera still appears to be working fine!
-Parts along MO 291 are already too late to become controlled-access, but MoDOT should try to save the rest.
-Despite some bad decisions, I still got to Unionville, at the Alamo Inn. I highly recommend it.
-Centerville's original Motel 60 does not appear to be active anymore, and the new one has been rebranded.

Look, it's outdoors, but you're near other people. As long as you're not breathing on them, it's a question of what you want to be captured in the photo. Brandon and Gene are standing off to the side not breathing toward others, so it's fine.

Yet, you still go out of your way to reference Brandon not having a mask.

The extreme winds didn't get in the way of the fun we had. Thanks for attending, everyone! Here's my group photo. (https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10114111940978973&set=gm.391863528660355)
Before I clicked: "It'll be a bunch of people in masks and Brandon"
After I clicked: "Oh, okay, and Gene"

I was amused that I predicted it, not even knowing if he'd be at the meet

Different legal requirements for the different locations and dates? Kentucky didn't have anything mandated back in the spring, but my understanding is Wisconsin did on the date of the LaCrosse meet.

Those photos from the Cincinnati meet were outdoors anyhow.
