Title: How many counties have you lived in?
Post by: bugo on August 26, 2018, 06:52:43 AM
I've lived in 9 counties, listed in chronological order: Polk County, Arkansas; Lonoke County, Arkansas; Chatham County, Georgia; Faulkner County, Arkansas; Johnson County, Missouri; Jackson County, Missouri; Clay County, Missouri; Garfield County, Oklahoma and Tulsa County, Oklahoma. I'm a bit of a vagabond. How many counties have you lived in?

Since my father was in the military, I moved around quite a bit in my childhood. Not so much as an adult.

My list of ten (roughly chronological, but not counting returns to counties where I already lived): Onslow County NC (born there), Otter Tail County MN, Prince William County VA, San Diego County CA (through high school), Santa Clara County CA (college), New Haven County CT (college), Sacramento County CA (summer job), Washington DC (summer job), Falls Church city VA, Arlington County VA (that last one continuously since 1982).

No, I've never even been to New Jersey. I meant that satirically towards Virginia as there are quite a few people who hate the state.

Does military service count? I never claimed residence in any of the states I served. Technically, I've never been a resident of a county. Connecticut ditched them 5 years before I was born.

But if you're not pedantic, I can say that I've lived in Hartford, Tolland, and New London Counties. I've served in Tom Green, TX, Monterey, CA, and  Christian, KY; but I'm pretty sure my barracks were in Montgomery, TN. I did a TDY tour at Fort Devens, Mass. but that was less than 90 days and should probably not be counted.

I have established "30-day residency" in Alameda, CA (conceived and currently); Sacramento, CA (born and raised); Santa Clara, CA (lived 24 years), Samsung-dong, Kangnam-gu (worked); and Travis, TX (worked planning to stay) Counties, and just missed the "continuous 30-day" mark working in Keelung, Taipei (but multiple 3- and 4-week stays give me a total time in Keelung greater than the time that I spent in Travis, which I regarded as "where I lived"). We can argue about whether a "Ku" or a "Dong" is the better approximation of a county or burough. Someone better versed in Korean Government than I am can help us out. In any case, it's 5 or 6.

I am not counting Fulton or Kalb, GA or any of the places that I spent only one week at a time for work or vacation.

I like the analysis that you provided in that thread, Duke. But I think that people in general stick close to home unless they're part of the creative class or academe.

Just curious, what was it about coal country that you found appealing?

I'm not sure where I'd like to move, if I were to move out of my neck of the woods, but I enjoy trips to northern New England and this spring's jaunt to Gettysburg. My main question is: how would I support my wife and myself? I can't afford menial employment and I think I'm too much of an organization man despite my independent streak.

Just curious, what was it about coal country that you found appealing?

It's that those towns manage to combine the following rather attractive traits:
- Old buildings/old architecture
- Relatively low cost of living
- Dense development, such that the town is walkable
- But the town is also small, so you can also get in the car and leave it to go elsewhere easily without contending with traffic and such
- And relatively close to home, such that visiting friends and family is not onerous

This is only viable as a retirement theory though, because such towns lack any decent nearby employment and are probably not a particularly good place to raise kids either.

I also don't see my soon to be bride going for it (this is a significant change that has happened since my post in the old thread which is also why my tune about relocating sooner has changed).

I count the time, just under a year, spent in Greene County, MO as living there, despite the fact that my legal domicile was in McClain County, OK at the time. I consider that if I'm sleeping in the same bed repeatedly, I'm keeping a large amount of my stuff there, and I have to sweep the floor myself, I'm "living there", even if I'm not voting or paying taxes there.

I've lived in four counties: Oklahoma OK, McClain OK, Greene MO, and Cleveland OK.

Nah, I'm good. I spend a lot of my time in surrounding areas anyway, and my county is larger than some states (both in size and population).

There's no crime in not moving a lot. I'm very happy to live in the county where I grew up, and have no desire to live anywhere else.

5, all in Illinois.  But two of those are because I lived away from home for high school and for college.  Four are the counties that form the four corners of Chicagoland (no one really calls it that) :)

I have lived in two counties in my life.

I lived in (and was born in) Hamilton County, Tennessee for approximately the first 6 months of my life. Then my family moved to Dalton, Georgia (Whitfield County), and that is where I have lived ever since. My dad actually grew up in the Dalton area, but they (he and my mom) temporarily lived in Chattanooga when I was born due to work.

But we still go to Chattanooga very often, many times at least once a week. It is a pretty short drive on Interstate 75 going northwest and we are up there.

I've only lived in one county (Monroe, NY), but I've traveled plenty. I think it can be harmful to neither move  nor travel with at least some frequency. Most people I know who haven't traveled much or moved at all have a very insular worldview; it would do them good to spend some time in different states, countries, environments, etc.

I think, in general, we Americans move too much and travel too little.

I don't think so of myself personally, but of the general population --- absolutely! Always wanting bigger and better and not taking time to travel.

There is a county called Yolo? Ew.

And a town.

5 counties; all in WI
(let's do it alphabetically)
Dane
Eau Claire
Milwaukee
Price
Wood

I have done a LOT of traveling in the last five years and seen a lot of places, good and bad.  But in all my travels, I still feel drawn to my 'home' region of the continent.  I think there remains only a relatively small area across three Midwest states (and one Canadian Province) that I would want to live.  There are a number of cultural and climate factors I could cite.  But the stupidest one that I would not feel at home without is this:

I wouldn't want to settle some place where these are not plying the local fresh waters.  Granted, they have a very large range these days:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftargetwalleye.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F11%2FTW_WalleyeMap_13.jpg&hash=754970043a679a0070067ed80ffc664864f4a769)
But I'd probably pass on a fairly decent career opportunity outside of these areas.
