I actually thought this thread would be referring to signs that have too much empty space on them.

I still have no idea why NYSTA installed that thing.  I think there was part of a thread where we tried to find another example of such an installation and could not.

At least add a small pull-through sign (no arrows) to make this seem sort of justified.

This old gantry on I-395 in Virginia has just the LGS for Seminary Road, the traffic light warning sign, and a variable speed limit sign for the express lanes (facing the opposite way from the camera viewpoint). Notice they put the other express lane signage on a new gantry constructed right next to the existing one, which feels sort of like it furthers the issue of using "too much metal."

In terms of non-APL signs that are themselves insanely big, the signs for Exit 16 on I-295 in Virginia come to mind, as they always make me wonder whether they could have handled the road name differently (perhaps abbreviate "Technology," for starters?).

The only other overhead gore sign like that that comes to mind for me is I-78 exit 60B westbound in PA...this one can at least be somewhat justified by the unusual gore design beyond, unlike that NYSTA example where the gore sign could probably be slapped on the bridge support.

While looking up that exit 60B example, I realized that the gore sign for the ramp from PA 309 NB to I-78 EB at the same interchange is also elevated...but this one seems completely unnecessary.

There used to be one at I-690, but it was removed during the 39-40 reconstruction over a decade back.

That same design was used at I-90 EB at I-690 for the exit 39 gore sign when they first rebuilt the interchange in 1987. If memory serves, I think Exit 25A was built around the same time because I remember both of these interchanges having the same design with a button copy gore sign of the same era.

We have an old map up in our office that shows the old configuration of the I-690/I-90 interchange, with the signal on I-690.

A cantilever right in front of a full-width gantry on I-75 at US-23's northern terminus in Mackinaw City.  (I believe the gantry is no longer there.)

This is a bit comedic. Not a fan of BGS for arterials that are too small like this. If you're going to go through the effort of installing overhead guide signs, do it right.

Yeah those signs definitely should be bigger. That gantry is so big that it might distract people from the signs and the information on them.
