Title: A 'Gulf' Station
Post by: ghYHZ on September 18, 2020, 12:41:14 PM
A Sign I haven't seen in Canada in probably 30 years.....a 'Gulf ' Station!.....and at a kinda out of the way location: Fundy National Park in Alma, New Brunswick. That's 'Irving' Country!  I haven't noticed another Gulf in the Maritimes but what about the rest of Canada?

Was the electronic price display off, or is that just because of the way the photo was taken?

A bit off topic, but I once saw a "Golf" station with Gulf's orange circle logo.

Here is a Guff service center (no longer there) that kinda borrows the Gulf logo on VA 231 in Cismont - https://goo.gl/maps/kZ2uzHTpETfxF4hc7

Off topic (but still off-brand...) was this Nobil station on US 29 north of Madison VA I photographed in 2007.  it's a Sunoco now.

That garage in Sherbrooke on PQ-216 is now a Gulf garage since last year. https://www.google.com/maps/@45.4276597,-71.8688877,3a,75y,82.53h,97.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1shO_1veZnPML1X-YvuDuNDg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Edit: That Gulf station in Alma, NB is still there from what I saw on the recent Google streetview.

Yup.....I took the picture two weeks ago. Wonder who's gas you're actually getting as I said I haven't seen any other Gulf Stations in the Maritimes (and Irving's Refinery is only about 100 klicks away!!)

We got them in Ontario starting back in 2015. As I understand it Gulf got a network of independent retailers to rebrand as Gulf stations. Seems pretty sporadic still here though.

...might not be the same one, but here's a "Golf" in Plant City, Florida in 2012:

There is only one in BC. Way over in Oliver, in the Okanagan, not far from the WA border: https://goo.gl/maps/svAmDBUuSNxPwKxW8

Other than that, the closest Gulf to the Lower Mainland is in Ferndale, WA: https://goo.gl/maps/xnpJhBuAoBxTyC2f6

I was in Alma last summer and I saw the station and may have filled up there.  Didn't know it was such an oddity.

We could probably have a whole thread on the off-topic side, if we wanted, about knock-off brand names. I recall when I was a little kid, there was a hotel down at the south end of Nags Head called the Armada Inn–it was built to be a Ramada, but the chain rejected it, so they reversed two letters. There used to be a couple of Six Twelve convenience stores in Fairfax City. Then there were these two places in Brooklyn, both at the same intersection and both owned by the same guy (he initially named the second one "New Kentucky Fried Chicken," but they sued him and he changed those two letters):

If you're going to do a knockoff of KFC, why not just change the state? Tennessee Fried Chicken, Georgia Fried Chicken...or hell, Kansas Fried Chicken if you really want to pretend to be "KFC".

Although I don't really get the purpose of doing a knockoff brand anyway. Nobody's going to really think that you're a real KFC...or if they're stupid enough to fall for it, they're also stupid enough to argue with you and try to use legit KFC coupons or make you honor promotions the real KFC is advertising, despite the fact that you're selling burgers and seafood at your "NKFC".

Read this, as well as the page linked there. Read the whole thing. This is great stuff.

XTR Energy has rights to the Gulf brand in Canada, so they're most likely sourcing what XTR stations in the region has...IIRC that Gulf in Alma is an ex-Irving location. Add Lac du Bonnet, MB as well to the list of Gulf locations, it's on Street View (ex-SHell location).

Uh, that's just "Gull".  Still a much reduced brand, and worth saving.

I re-read that thread and it's bring me flashbacks of McDowell's from the movie "Coming to America".
