Giving roads an I-70 in MD style starting mileage sign

What if other roads started with a sign like I 70 does in Baltimore (mileage listed for Columbus, St. Louis, Denver, and Cove Fort). Which 4 cities would other roads choose?

For 90, I'm guessing Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago, and Seattle westbound and Spokane, Chicago, Cleveland, Boston eastbound

95:S Boston, New York, Washington, Miami. Nb Jacksonville, Washington, New York, Houlton.

10: W New Orleans, Houston, Phoenix, Santa Monica. E Phoenix, San Antonio, Houston, Jacksonville

5 N LA, Sacramento, Seattle, Blaine S Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Diego

And 70 W Denver, Kansas City (should replace St Louis in the real sign imo), Indianapolis, Baltimore

Hobart

I'm gonna make the obligatory joke about Interstate 70 in Baltimore.

"Baltimore" should be replaced with "Security Boulevard Park and Ride".

For 80, it would probably be (facing west) Cleveland, Chicago, Des Moines, Sacremento, then San Francisco. If you really felt like it, you could omit Cleveland or add Denver or Omaha.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I do think that every Interstate should have a sign like that every say 50 to 100 miles. I would have it be the following:
Next Exit or Town
Next Secondary Control City
Next Major Control City
Highway Ending Point or Major Control City just beyond the ending. (Los Angeles for I-40 West for example.)

But to keep in the spirit of what you were talking about, I-55 I would do:
Northbound
Jackson, Miss
Memphis
St Louis
Chicago

Southbound
St Louis
Memphis
New Orleans

Imagine I-74 in Iowa with a Myrtle Beach control point

But in all seriousness, I like long distance control cities. There’s one on US 20 in Boston that shows the distance to Newport, Oregon. Obviously no one is going to follow US 20 the whole way to Oregon, but I think these signs show the overall prominence of said highway and I like it.
Decommission 128 south of Peabody!

Lowest untraveled number: 56

I-80 WB: Cleveland. Chicago. Salt Lake City. San Francisco
I-80 EB: Salt Lake City. Omaha. Chicago. New York City

I'd like to see, just in IL, mileage signs on US 51 in Cairo for South Beloit, and in South Beloit for Cairo. Same thing for US 45 in Antioch and Metropolis. Illinois is a lot "taller"  N-S state than many think

HighwayStar

I agree these should be obligatory on every road. Each end should have one sign that gives the other endpoint, and a couple major control cities along the route.

For controlled access roads it should be after the first exit or so (in the case of I-70 I think its farther than that but its been a while).

So here would be a few examples

I-90 (Westbound)

  • Chicago, IL 981
  • Billings, MT 2261
  • Seattle, WA 3081

I-90 (Eastbound)

  • Billings, MT 821
  • Chicago, IL 2299
  • Boston, MA 3081
There are those who travel, and those who travel well

-- US 175 --

Not that TxDOT will do this, but to me it would be helpful...

US 175 EB: Seagoville, Kaufman, Athens, Jacksonville
WB: Frankston, Athens, Kaufman, Dallas

One could be put on QC 132 EB in Dundee reading the distance to Montréal, Québec, then Sainte-Flavie twice, with one number counting the loop and the other not counting it.

For I-81:

Northbound (mileage from I-40): Roanoke 225, Harrisburg 507, Syracuse 755, Thousand Islands 853

Southbound (Mileage from the Canadian border): Binghamton 172, Harrisburg 351, Roanoke 641, Dandridge TN 853 (Or, could use Knoxville 888)

Another idea in addition to the spirit of this thread, as I-81 is used as an I-95 bypass, one could list cities via other interstates at certain points along the route.

A sign on northbound I-81 just north of I-77 south could read Washington DC via I-66 295, Philadelphia via I-76 453, New York City via I-78 515, Boston via I-84 and I-90 756.

Southbound signage might be a bit more complicated, depending on the cities chosen. From a point just south of I-66, Charleston WV via I-64 290, Charlotte via I-77 347, Knoxville via I-40 409, Nashville via I-40 588 would be easy.

But, many travelers on I-81 are heading to further destinations. So how complicated do you get? Atlanta via I-77 & I-85 583? Jacksonville via I-77 & I-26 & I-95 729? Miami via I-77 & I-26 & I-95 1080? Would that be helpful, confusing, or not a concern at all?

SkyPesos

71 is easy, as there's exactly 4 large cities on the route:
NB: Cincinnati, Columbus Cleveland
SB: Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville

For 75, the signs would have 4 cities on them:
NB: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Salut Ste Marie
SB: Detroit, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Miami

Also side note, shouldn't this thread be in fictional?

skluth

I'd like it on shorter interstates

I-43
Green Bay - NB
Manitowoc
Sheboygan
Milwaukee
Beloit - SB

I-72
Hannibal - WB
Jacksonville
Springfield
Decatur
Champaign - EB

I-8 is more complicated
San Diego - WB
El Centro
Yuma
Gila Bend
Tucson - EB (the logical eastbound destination though it requires some distance on I-10)

I-41 is similar
Green Bay - NB
Appleton
Fond du Lac
Milwaukee
Chicago - SB (similar to I-8)

I-15, northbound from San Diego:
Barstow
Las Vegas
Salt Lake City
Sweet Grass, Mont.

TheHighwayMan3561

I-35 south from Duluth:
Minneapolis
Kansas City
DFW
Laredo

I-94 from Montana:
Minneapolis
Milwaukee
Chicago
Port Huron

I picked Milwaukee over Detroit since Port Huron is essentially in the Detroit metro area, but it's one of those that's tough.

Milwaukee is almost in Chicago's Metro area, so it's a bit of a toss-up. I see Detroit because it is (still) a bigger city

And 70 W Denver, Kansas City (should replace St Louis in the real sign imo), Indianapolis, Baltimore

Just out of idle curiosity, why do you think Kansas City should replace Saint Louis? Its MSA has a 27% bigger population than Kansas City's.

I'd love to see a "Detroit - 2,484 mi" sign in Aberdeen.

I'd pick any of Great Falls, Butte, Idaho Falls, or Pocatello over Barstow if we're talking about southbound.
