VA 9xxxx routes explained

While perusing Virginia's arcgis map viewer, I found a bunch more 9xxxx routes.

It turns out these are the designations for "Federal Lands Roads" and after several hours of compiling it seems to me these are roads that are open to the public in some way (i.e. internal roads on military bases for example do not turn up as anything).  For 90003, 90004 and 90005, the designation is "primary state highway" instead.  I did not find 90000, 90001 or 90002 (I still think BR Pkwy and Skyline Dr would be two of these if not for VA 48) but found the following list before I got tired of trying to fill in gaps with harder-to-locate 9xxxx roads.

I imagine some 9xxxx roads have been discontinued.

Here is the list of what I found:

I do not feel right bragging about having clinched VA 90230.   :-D

I am sure I know people that have (probably my dad, one of my closest friends, etc.), but I personally have not.

I drove most of 90500 every workday from April 1996 to August 1998.  Only got the part west of I-95 a few times though...

90244 is one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it driveways. I worked across the street from it for awhile and it was rarely ever visited.

Good to see I've clinched VA 90500.

Too bad I've never been on VA 90210...

Evidently I have clinched VA 90026. Woo. A deep pit in my stomach about having never clinched a route in Virginia has been filled.

When the military left Fort Monroe, the company I was working for at the time were the ones that moved them out. We were all over the place in there. Until now I had no idea about the 9xxxx routes there. Now that the former base is wide open I'm pretty sure a lot of people outside the roadgeek community have clinched 90202 (because of Paradise Ocean Club) many times over.

It's a shame that 90210 doesn't go to some high school populated by snobby kids.

(Watching that show was a guilty pleasure of mine back in the 1990s.)

There IS a high school about 2 miles from VA 90210, though I don't know if the kids there are snobby.  :-D

Messing around some more with the arcgis site I was able to get it to show a list (after substantial scrolling) of these 9xxxx routes.

All numbers 90003 through 90246, plus 90500 are the entirety of the list.  But the list doesn't say where there are at, so it is a slow process to identify where these are.  Spot checking the gaps in my list, the only facility I have found I completely missed was Cumberland Gap campground (I checked the actual parking area but didn't look far enough afield).

Incidentally there are well over 1000 school routes per a summary table so I am curious how that works when these have been the 9000-series routes.

Also, ramps are given individual numbers, and these are 99xxx.

The map is a bit weird because some of the numbered routes aren't labeled, particularly primary routes in independent cities.

I never understood why every road in Virgina has to get a number. They even number short dead end residential streets. Even though they have names. Why not just go by their names?

Because that would be a living nightmare with the massive state-maintained secondary route system Virginia has.

The routes have to be cataloged somehow. That's easier done with numbers than names. Even in Kentucky, where we definitely have county- and city-maintained roads and streets, there are internal numbering systems. It's rare that the counties post the route numbers, but they're there.

Does anyone ever refer to those roads by their number? I would think not they would say the live on whatever the street name they are on and not Hwy 1535 or something like that.

The last time I was there, many people in western Hanover County were still calling the roads by the numbers, even the secondary routes (600 and above). They didn't say "Route" or anything in front of it, literally just the number: 33, 54, 271, 610, 623, 657, etc. The exception to this was US 1, which was referred to as "Numba One".

I think it's just common in many rural areas because back in the day the roads in many places didn't have names at all.

If anyone does use a number they have probably been around a while. Just about every street and road, even out in rural areas, has a name due to improvements in the 911 system. Newer (younger) residents may be aware of some numbers but typically refer to a road by name.

It's been my observation that some of the counties signpost roads with names; others do not. Going strictly from memory, even some of the primary state and US routes have names, and the names on the local signs don't always match up with what the state posts on signs (Orby Cantrell, George C. Peery, etc.)

Occasionally. In Fairfax County, Route 644 is sometimes called such (and is almost always called such by radio traffic reporters) because it changes names from Franconia Road to Old Keene Mill Road when it crosses I-95. The Fairfax County Parkway was often called simply "7100"  before it was renumbered as a primary route, though it was again mostly traffic reporters who did that.

Wasn't that before the Fairfax County Parkway was completed?  The rest of the trip was on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway (which was a hodge-podge of relocated secondary route numbers), so it was easier for some of the traffic reporters to refer to the whole mess as "the 7100" instead of trying to figure out which mess was on part of the Fairfax County Parkway and which mess wasn't.  Except that the rest of the Fairfax County Parkway eventually opened and got numbered SR-7100 anyhow.

No.  Fully completed in 2010 and upgraded to primary routing in 2012

The arterial roads in the independent cities are also numbered, though they do not appear on maps or signage.  They DO appear in the traffic logs.

You missed the point.  The question was whether [whoever] that used the term "The 7100" for the Fairfax County Parkway was continuing to use that same term after the section from completed from Hooes Road down to I-95.  There were several times that I heard the traffic reporters on WTOP and WBIG talk of backups on "The 7100" that were east of Hooes Road on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway section.  Back in those days, the Franconia-Springfield was numbered as SR-636 and SR-638 prior to getting upgraded to SR-7900, as the expressway portion involved bypasses/relocations of those two roads (Hooes Road and Barkers Road).  Perhaps it would have been better to ask if the term "The 7100" continued to be used on the FCP portion after the Franconia-Springfield was upgraded to SR-7900.
