It still shows up sometimes, but not consistently, like here, where old-school NJDOT decided to make another Kansas cameo: https://goo.gl/maps/GgfM3MSJe3KpTgTj6

Multiple signs at that interchange recently got the New Jersey treatment.

In Canada, Newfoundland often uses route marker unisigns like this, with the route name (in English and French) between the route symbol and the route number.

Some examples from elsewhere are the recently-built NT 9, with the Tlicho Highway name (in Dogrib and English) on the same signpost, and BC 113, marked also as the Nisga'a Highway. Those might've been at the request of the Tlicho and Nisga'a First Nations, rather than a general policy of the territorial or provincial transportation ministries.

I think the original intent of the OP was something more like this.

The route shield with the expressway name and a control point.
I wish more cities and states did this. Where it would get silly is when a long established highway is renamed to honor someone else. For example, I still refer to I-88 as the East-West Tollway or the Reagan E-W Tollway and not just the Reagan Tollway. And don't get me started on the name changes of Congress Pkwy and Lake Shore Dr.

I'm aware what the OP said. I just pointed out that if the sign above had names it would be it.   I'm aware Benicia is not a road name.

Just pointing out that Caltrans used the NY format for Route/ road name here for route/city instead as a fun fact.

I wasn't specifically talking about your post. I saw plenty of posts prior to yours that would say this as an example when I don't think that was the intent.

I could be wrong but using a road name in place of a control city was not the intent.

Yep.  East-West Tollway for me too.  While we're on the subject, are there any signs that refer to the North-South Tollway as the Veterans Memorial Tollway?

Only on 355 itself and it is done as those brown honorary signs. At interchanges, there is no reference at all to the N-S Tollway or the Veterans Memorial Tollway. And for the record, I still call it the N-S Tollway.

I guess that might depend on our definitions...

To me, those are just generic Tollway labels before the yellow background TOLL became the popular generic label.

(Untangled your quote string.)

Then apparently I'm not remembering the "classic" Chicago treatment correctly.  Can you show me an example of, say, classic signage for the Tri-State?

Thanks!  That last example stands out, as I'm sure I've driven under that sign a zillion times.
