Title: 2017 MLB Postseason
Post by: CNGL-Leudimin on October 10, 2017, 05:50:38 PM
We already have two teams into the League Championship Series (or "semi-finals" as I call them), and I'm surprised there's no thread for the Major League Baseball postseason. Perhaps it's because the Cubs hype is gone now that they have claimed a World Series after a century? Anyway, if the Indians manage to beat the Yankees and the Cubs do so with the Nationals I'd be definitely rooting for the American League side in the World Series, as the Indians have now the longest World Series drought and the Astros have never won one.

The Cubs hype is not gone if they eliminate the Nationals, which I hope happens as a Braves fan.

I'm rooting for whoever plays the Cubs and Yankees. As of right now, that's the Indians and Nationals. I'm predicting the World Series will be the Indians over the Dodgers in 7.

Not necessarily. There are certain teams that everyone hates, even if you're just a fan of the sport in general.

I'm rooting for a Cubs/Dodgers NLCS so that there could be a rematch of the two teams from my first two hometowns! (Even after I moved to L.A., I still remained loyal to the Cubs, and that hasn't changed since I moved to Seattle.)

I'm pretty disappointed that the Yankees beat Cleveland.  I though Cleveland/Houston would have been the best series for the ALCS.

I'm also hoping the Nat's triumph over the Cubs.  The Nat's are due.  It's a near 50 year old franchise and its never even won a pennant.

That just means your team is sad.

Or it just means you're a negative person.

In pro football, the teams I most strongly root against are in different divisions from the ones I most strongly root for, and some on my root-against list are already out of playoff contention. With my team, the Carolina Panthers, I weakly root against its division rivals, unless the Panthers fall out of playoff contention (like early in the 2016 season) or lock up their division, in which case I don't bother.

For MLB, it's ritual hatred of the Yankees (not that I was a big fan of the Indians). But I was impressed with how they came back and put away the Indians, and hope they don't pull that off against the Astros. In the NL, I'm rooting for the Nats, but even if they beat the Cubs tonight, I'm not optimistic about how they'll fare against the Dodgers.

The MLB was hoping for the Yankees. How many Cleveland and Houston fans do you know? Now you have Yankees vs. Yankees haters. Keeps the whole country interested. Definitely the best series for the ALCS. The Cubs are also better for the World Series from that perspective.

Prepare to be disappointed, Nats fans! It'll be Cubs vs. Dodgers for the second year in a row. Also, Yankees vs. Astros should be one worth watching.

Why did our (The Cubs) pitching try so hard to lose the game last night?

Our pitching needs serious upgrades in the offseason. I'll be shocked if we get past LA

While I don't disagree with this sentiment, I'm not sure why my ALCS preferences would need to align with what would maximize ratings from the MLB's perspective.

Certainly I thought two 100-win teams would make for better baseball than only one vs. the wild card team.

Well, since my Red Sox put up another stellar postseason performance (enough to get John Farrell the axe), I will be rooting for ABY: A nyone But the Yankees.  Have a good friend that's an Astros fan, so I suppose I'll be pushing for them first, the Dodgers second because of Dave Roberts and his stolen base heard round the world in 04, then the Cubs (Lester, Lackey, Theo), and then the unmentionables.

I'd root for the Yankees if necessary, something unlikely for the time being. At least there's no team in the MLB named "F"C [sic] Barcelona :bigass:.

However I'm rooting for the Astros to win the World Series, now that the Indians are gone.

I wonder if this is the first playoffs where the final four teams represent the four largest cities (not metros) in the USA (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston)?

In any case, I was trained to dislike the Dodgers, so here's hoping for a 29th year of futility for them.

I believe so.

As a Chicagoan, I was raised to hate all things New York, and so far, so good for the Astros being up 2-0 on the Yankees. And here's to the Cubs turning things around at Wrigley after digging an 0-2 hole against the Dodgers.

It is. And it even worked out as if they were seeded by population: 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3

Hasn't happened since Houston became the 4th largest city in 1990:

Houston doesn't have a hockey team so we can rule out that sport automatically
Quick scan of AFC/NFC Championshp games shows no year that all four cities advanced that far
The only Chicago/NY meeting in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals was 1993 and the Western Finals that year was not Houston/LA

Now, I haven't gone back to pre-1990 when Philly was the 4th largest city to see if the NY-LA-Chicago-Philly combination shows up anywhere.

There was the 1980 Stanley Cup finals when the Philadelphia Flyers lost against the NY Islanders.

Too bad then the WHA Houston Aeros had disseapeared before the WHA-NHL merger, imagine what might have been...

I'm rooting for the Astros because they have never won the World Series. I always go with the team that has the longest championship drought (And at least the Cubs managed to win it all last year after a century). However if they and the Cubs make to the World Series (Something unlikely as Cubs are 0-2 down against Dodgers) I predict the Astros will become the first team to lose it against both Chicago teams :bigass:.

For those not aware, the Nats and Astros opened a combined spring training complex earlier this year in Palm Beach, FL. For at least the past half decade, my Nats have been telling me that this is the year they'll win it all. It is now my hope that next spring, the Nats have to go to work for 6 weeks by passing under a big sign proclaiming "Spring Home of the World Series Champions".

Perish the thought, the Cubs have prevented a Dodgers sweep, and who knows, they might become the second team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the LCS. Of course, somebody named Epstein oversaw the first instance of that, with the '04 Red Sox.

Given that both Cubs and Sox fans also cheer for the Bears, I'd say that the Bears own Chicago, and have since Walter Payton first put on #34, if not before. Yes, even while they stink/stank/stunk up Soldier Field over the years, and the Bulls got 6 rings in the '90s and the Blackhawks got 3 in this decade.  I left Chicago a long time ago, but my feeling is that it's still primarily a Bears town.

The Flubs are a regional team from the north side who wins once every 100 years or so.  The Sox are still a few years away, but IMNSHO will be back in the Series before the Flubs are.  :bigass:

Okay, the Cubs are out so they won't win a second World Series in a row and then wait 108 years for the next one. It's down to the Astros to decide wether I'm rooting for them or the Dodgers in the World Series (Since I'm with all those who hate the Yankees).

I heard that the commissioner cancelled all games for the rest of the season.

seriously, I posted in a Cubs facebook group something about the loss and how I figured we lose, but how the loss was embarrassing, and some other fan said I wasn't a real Cubs fan and that I should go root for the dodgers.  Fuck that noise.  I REALLY hate other Cubs fans that say such and such isn't a true fan if they don't agree with them 100%  It's fucking bullshit.  I was a pallbearer at my grandfathers funeral. He was buried wearing his favorite Cubs shirt.  I watched many games with him when I was a kid.  Don't fucking call me a bandwagoner because I express my frustration with my team.

Sounds like he was someone who jumped on last year and barely knows anything from the team before 2016

Just like many Yankee bandwagon jumpers who have suddenly come crawling out of the woodwork like termites for the first time in 7 years think baseball didn't exist before 1996, and that the Yankee hat is a fashion accessory more than a symbol of their favorite team.  These are the ones with a sense of entitlement that the World Series title is always theirs, and for them not to win is to have it stolen from them.  They know who Derek Jeter or Aaron Judge is, but ask them who Babe Ruth or Yogi Berra was, and they'll tell you that one was a chocolatier who created a famous candy bar and the other lives in Jellystone Park.

I'll just have to wait to see who I'll be rooting for in the World Series, now that my Cubs have been eliminated. If the Yankees win, I'll pick the Dodgers, since I used to live in L.A. many years back, but if the Astros come back to win the ALCS, then I'm definitely pulling for them.

Much like the Patriots fans who think the Super Bowl has only been around since 2002, who know Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Rob Gronkowski but not Drew Bledsoe or Bill Parcells, and think their team has the right to every Lombardi trophy (adding that any time they don't win it, they've been robbed).

Cowboys fans always think the Lombardi Trophy is theirs to lose, and that the world revolves around their team.  You'll only hear from many of them come playoff time, but they run away the second they get knocked out of the playoffs, which has become a common occurrence since 1996.

Sure there are many Pats bandwagon jumpers, but I can remember in 1990 sitting in a nearly empty Foxboro Stadium watching a 1-15 team full of no-names  (Marc Wilson at QB) with fans who talked more about the Lisa Olson/Zeke Mowatt incident than the play of the team.  25 years ago, they almost moved to St. Louis before Kraft bought the team.  I wonder what alternate history would be like if Brady's tuck call was upheld.

Living in western MA during those bleak years for the Pats after Super Bowl XX, all I can say is that you couldn't pay anyone enough to be a Pats fan back then.

Great! The Astros have earned my rooting rights for the World Series. They have never won the Fall Classic since they started playing as the Colt .45s in 1962, adopting their current name in 1965.

In addition, they were 0-4 in 2005, when they lost to the White Sox (the team I could never root for as a diehard Cubs fan). So this time around, I hope that the Astros can get at least a win or two against the Dodgers.

Also, here's to Houston being the first city to ever represent the NL and AL in the World Series. Anytime a New York team loses in the postseason is a good day for me.

There are two world series teams.  One team represents the city that is full of victims of Harvey.

And the other team is the Houston Astros. :-D

Guess what? The Astros finally won a World Series game, with the most suspenseful Game 2 ever that went into extra innings (11, to be exact). And they ended a five-game losing streak in the championship round (of course, dating back to 2005).

Go Astros, go! Now that they have won a World Series game, they should win the whole thing.

Well, I know who Yogi Berra was, as I've read about him as his Yogiisms :sombrero:. However my favorite Yankee player of all times is Lou Gehrig. Mainly because the Spanish running community got its own version of him recently.

After what Houston had gone through with Hurricane Harvey, that city definitely deserved to celebrate a championship. The Astros have their first championship since the Rockets went back-to-back two decades ago, and their World Series win so much more than made up for their dud the first time around.

Their first time around wasn't so much a dud as they just ran into one of the best teams of all time.

They said that about New York and 9/11. Life isn't always fairy tales, and again the Yankees come out on the short end. I know, I can't complain.

Didn't Milwaukee represent the NL (with the Braves in 1957 and 1958) and the AL (with the Brewers in 1982) in the World Series?  Granted they were separate teams, but the same city.

If we're going to be that pedantic, Chicago was the first city to have both NL and AL representation, in 1906.

Agree with that. Houston is probably the first team to go to the World Series as an AL team and NL team. All the other one's from the same city have been different teams.
