I've never asked about them, but I remember reading on other roadgeek sites that it has something to do with wind loading and/or sign weight.

This week, I did a special update to take care of a couple things that either feel through the cracks in the last update or which got onto my to do list quickly after and I didn't want to wait for whenever the next regular update will be.  This includes updates to the I-86 Spur, I-87, and Cross Island Parkway exit lists.

The spur designations that you list in New York, are those attested to anywhere?  It would be nice if they existed, but I don't think that they actually do.

I do not believe so.  I just needed something to call those things when I made the exit lists.

They have, some of them, reference route designations. And they often have mile markers of their "parent" route, but to my knowledge nothing has ever officially been called a "spur" in this state.

This month, I merged spur routes into the exit lists for their main route; updated I-84, I-81, I-86/NY 17, Saw Mill River Parkway, and Garden State Parkway exist lists; updated the links page; updated the photos page; updated the info page and updated the roadmeet page format; and updated the home page text.

Your website has evidently been very helpful recently here in DOT Region 8 circles. A colleague who works in my field office (former TCI turned Junior Engineer) has been doing some preliminary work on an upcoming ramp-related project on the Hutchinson River Parkway and was utilizing your site's exit listings as a means of approximating distances between exits and around the service station near the North Street exit (probably for forthcoming WZTC purposes). Our work has real-life applications outside of this community and it's always neat to see professionals in my field utilizing our research & websites to their benefit. Keep up the good work!

Yes! That happens from time to time–information from my own site also made it into some NYSDOT materials about reference markers once. (Fortunately my info was itself derived from earlier NYSDOT publications.) And I know it's happened to others as well. Good to know what we do isn't entirely useless! :-)

Nice!

I remember a presentation in the Highway Data Services conference on references for research and "roadgeek websites" was one of the items (and the head of the unit at the time was aware of mine).  I also have a binder on the local reference routes in Region 1 and the first couple pages are a printout of the Empire State Roads page listing the Region 1 reference routes!

You should expand out of NY and do they neighboring states of NY such as CT,NJ,PA,MA, and VT, or make them separate websites.
Roads I have clinched- I-84 (MA-CT-NY-PA), I-78 (NY-NJ-PA), I-395 (DC-VA), I-695 (Both DC and NY), I-490 (NY), I 390 (NY), I-787 (NY), I-287 (NY-NJ), I-795 (NC), I-140 (NC), I-295 (Both VA and MD), I-270 (MD), And I am only 13 so I have much more to clinch.

There's actually a bit more VT on my site than you'd think; I got inspired to do the exit lists after the Burlington meet, and the Burlington meet page has some stuff there too.  I also have the breakdown of VT's reference markers on that page along with NY's and Monroe County's mainly because I knew I'd forget how they work if I didn't put that information somewhere.

Pennsylvania is actually covered on another site called Pennsylvania Highways.  There's a fair amount of info on NJ, CT, and MA on Steve Anderson's sites:
