Title: Has Anyone Ever Clinched I-40?
Post by: TheArkansasRoadgeek on September 19, 2018, 05:55:45 PM
Have you clinched I-40 or another similar coast to coast interstate? I think it would be cool to do something like this as a mega road trip. Being that I live in Arkansas, I would have to decided on which way to drive and then wind up making three trips total.

I've clinched both I-10 (the last segment in 2001) and I-80; accomplished that in almost one fell swoop (Roseville CA to I-280 in NJ) back in the spring of 1989.  In regards to I-40, I'm missing I-81 to Waynesville, NC, I-26 to Winston-Salem, and everything east of I-85.  I'd have I-90 in the bag as well except for one measly little section between I-87 and US 20 at Exit #2 on the MassPike.  Close but no cigar!

That is an oddly specific question but yes, in fact, I have clinched I-40.

I've clinched I-10 twice and I'm just missing part of I-40 in North Carolina.  Honestly (in response to the OP) really aside from needing to get somewhere fast I'd rather take something way more on the scenic side than an Interstate for a "mega road trip."  Granted I-40 goes through some cool regions that have nearby access to US 66 segments and National Parks but man I-10 just plain sucks in terms of scenery.

I-20 and I-70 are nearly transcontinental (but not quite), and anyone can clinch I-30 in one shot, so it's a little bit surprising that the original post would include I-40 only. But yeah, I have been able to do it as well.

Are you asking if people have clinched it in one sitting?  Or if people have been on all parts of it in general?

When I was in the Army back in '89, I moved all the way from Monterey, CA to Fort Devens, MA by way of Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX. So I made it coast to coast in two trips, but I took many highways.

I-90 is fully transcontinental. I'd argue I-80 is, too.

You're getting a good start.  When I was your age, I was focusing purely on goals in my home state.  I just wanted to get a photo of every state highway in Illinois.  It feels good to achieve goals that are...well, achievable.  A lot of people on this forum have many more years than either of us--that's why they have accomplished so many clinches and goals of that ilk.  You'll get around to where they're at, if that's what you want.  My only advice is to make sure your goals are what YOU want to do regardless of what anyone else thinks.  Just because others clinch highways and count counties doesn't mean that's what your goals have to be, too.

Yes; I finished the eastern NC section about a year and a half ago, largely because you really need to make an effort to get to Wilmington even under the best of circumstances. I've also clinched I-10 and I-80, both many years ago. Missing most of I-90 in Minnesota, New York, and Massachusetts; remaining states long since clinched..

I didn't have any standalone mileage on i-40 until this year, only on the duplexes with I-35 and I-55. This year though I've added some in NC, TN, AR, and NM, though still even the only significant part of that was in TN.

In 2003 I moved to CA from Annandale VA.  I drove all of I-40 from I-85 interchange to Barstow,CA  in that one trip, except when I was driving through Nashville I took advised detour on freeway (I-440?) that connected on either side of downtown.  Maybe someone here knows about that downtown Nashville I-40 detour.  I  think it is I-440.  But I am certain that I had driven through Nashville on I-40 on a previous trip, as also have driven the I-40 sections from Durham east through Raleigh and on to the eastern terminus in Wilmington.  I also have driven the original I-40 configuration that only connected Durham to Raleigh (now NC-147) to freeway terminus at Wade Avenue

Honestly, if I were taking a cross-country road trip for the express purpose of clinching a highway, I would focus on US highways.   "Drive US20 end-to-end" sounds more interesting than, say, "drive I-80 end-to-end".

No.  I do have I-40 clinched in Tennessee however (I-30, Little Rock, AR to I-26, Asheville, NC) with bits and pieces elsewhere (California, Arizona, Texas).  I have; however, clinched I-70 and I-94, with all of I-80 east of West Wendover, NV.

I once traveled from San Jose, CA to Flagstaff, AZ, so I have clinched I-40 in California.

Interestingly on that trip, it was raining on I-40 in California and snowing on the way to and at Flagstaff. Of all the possibly days that could happen, it happened in late April!

What's left for me - anywhere between OKC and Fort Smith.  Also anywhere east of Raleigh.  Everything else is done.

Ironically - of the E-W Major Interstates, I-40 is in the lead - for a guy who lives between I-80 and I-90.

I have done I-40 from Tucumcari, NM to Kingman, AZ missing two segments.  One is in Albuquerque and the other from the Petrified Forest to where US 180 joins the freeway.  Then I have done it in Oklahoma in the eastern part  as well as Knoxville (including the I-75 overlap), Asheville, and Raleigh.

I-70 I have done from its western terminus to Denver, from Limon, CO to Vandalia, IL (minus its old alignment in St. Louis), the I-57 overlap,  I did it through Indianapolis, and from I-71 to the PA Turnpike.

I-10 I have done parts in TX, such as San Antonio from Downtown to Six Flags, from Winnie, TX to its eastern terminus in Jax, and parts in California such as from the PCH in Santa Monica to the I-5 interchange, and from Upland to Colton.

I have five different segments of I-40 done: one from Williams to Flagstaff AZ, one from Gallup to Albuquerque, one from Clines Corners to Santa Rosa, one from I-44 to I-35 in Oklahoma City, and one near Wilmington NC.

As for other transcontinental interstates:

I have I-80 from San Francisco (a mile east of the terminus) all the way to I-25 in Cheyenne.

I have I-70 from I-15 to US 50/89 at Salina, then from US 6/191 in Green River to I-76 in Denver. I also have the short bit between I-225 and Pena Blvd in Denver. And then I have the part between I-670 and I-64, plus the I-55 concurrency in IL between I-64 and I-255.

I-90 is covered from I-5 to I-82 in WA, and then from US 93 to I-15 in MT.

I-20 I just have two small sections: the US 287 concurrency near Dallas, and the US 84 concurrency west of Abilene.

I-10 I have between I-37 and Houston, as well as another piece within downtown Houston.

And I-30 I have between Fort Worth and Dallas.

I-10 I need from US-231 exit near Cottondale, FL to the I-20 interchange in TX, and then from I-25 in Las Cruces to its western terminus.

I have a significant percentage of I-20 in the bag, I really just need from the I-30 interchange near Fort Worth to the I-75/I-85 interchange in Atlanta to finish that up (yeah I know not a true coast to coast but hey why not, right?).

Oh and yes, little insignificant I-30 is clinched.

For I-40 I still need the section from I-25 in Albuquerque west to I-15 in Barstow to clinch. I did from I-25 east to US-70 in Garner NC in one 2 day sitting in 2011. I have been between Raleigh and Wilmington numerous times previously.

I-70 i am real cloudy on. I know I have from I-270 in the west St Louis suburbs to the I-55 split near Troy Illinois as it existed in the 1980's. I have not been across the new I-70 bridge as it is configured now, and I am not sure if I have from between Troy IL and Effingham. I do know that I have been from Effingham east to at least Frederick MD, not real sure if I have been between Frederick and Baltimore on I-70. I for sure have not been west of I-270 in St Louis on I-70.

I-80 from I-280 in western IL to Ft Lee NJ is done, I need everything west of there.

I-90 from Madison Wisconsin to the OH-2 interchange in Cleveland is done, I need both sides of that yet.

And that's the only section of I-40 I haven't clinched.  I live in Arkansas as well and have done all of it from I-15 to I-81 on 2 separate trips.  That stretch looks like it'd be pretty scenic too, so maybe one of these days I'll have a hankering to vacation to a North Carolina beach and knock it out.

I have been a passenger on I-40: Kingman to Williams in AZ; Flagstaff to Holbrook in AZ; Petrified Forest to Albuquerque; Amarillo to Little Rock

If the weather cooperates in January I will drive all of I-40 from Little Rock to Barstow.

I've clinched I-70, even though it only makes it to Utah. I live sort of near its Baltimore eastern terminus. I first tackled between Maryland exits 91 and 83 (in that direction) in 1997, then MD 83-52 in 2005, MD 52-29 in 2006, MD 29-18 in early 2008, and MD exit 18 all the way to St. Louis, Missouri over two consecutive days later in 2008. Then I got the rest on a summer 2009 RV trip: St. Louis to I-29/35 on the first day after flying from Baltimore to St. Louis via Charlotte, and some days later, I hit up the western terminus at Cove Fort, Utah after taking I-15 from Provo. Stayed near the Arches that night; Breckenridge, Colorado the next night; WaKeeney, Kansas (exactly halfway in between Denver and Kansas City) the night after that, and at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City the final night before trading in the RV for a rental car, driving back to St. Louis and flying the return St. Louis-Charlotte-Baltimore flights. I think it was still 2009 when I really made it official and drove that little segment from the I-695 stack to the parking lot just past Security Boulevard.

As for I-40, I've been on all but its westernmost 12 miles in Arkansas, from the Mississippi River bridge to I-65 in Nashville and from TN-66 to I-81 in Tennessee, a few miles in the Asheville, North Carolina area (up to the I-26 split), and from the U.S. 117 Connector to its eastern terminus in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Between OKC and LA, I've made that drive over 30 times and I still enjoy it! For some reason I really enjoy the drive in west Oklahoma. Also love the New Mexico/AZ border and through Flagstaff.

I almost ALWAYS get pulled over in West Arizona if I drive during the day.

I need to look to see exactly where I got to, but I've ridden on all of I-70 from the Maryland beginning to somewhere west of Denver.  I have driven all of it from the Maryland beginning to Topeka, KS.

I've got I-40 from Kingman, AZ to Wilmington, NC. Just need to get west of Kingman.

As much as I-40 has been a part of my life, I only have it from I-49 in Arkansas to somewhere SE of Benson, NC, then a couple of gaps towards Wilmington.

I only have I-70 in the following sections:
* from Frisco, CO to the east side of Aurora, CO
* from Topeka, KS to East St. Louis, IL
* from the Indianapolis Airport to the I-465 interchange on the east side
* from the western I-270 interchange in Columbus, OH to Washington, PA
* from Hancock, MD to the MD 32 exit

I think I have all of I-10 from Beltway 8 east of Houston to the eastern end at Jacksonville.

And I have all of I-20 from Delta, LA to the eastern end at Florence, SC.

I barely have any of I-80 or I-90 to mention, but I do have nearly all of the Mass Pike (I lack it from I-95/MA 128 to I-93).

The only E-W interstates I have fully clinched are 4, 12, 16, 24, 26, and 68.  I lack a couple of sections of 64 in VA from having it fully clinched.  Otherwise I have 59, 77, and 85 fully clinched, and lack the northern couple of miles of 65 from having all of it.

Curious...why just Delta, LA on I-20? We're you in Vicksburg and just crossed the MS River? Or did you get off to take US 80?

I did I-40 from Wilmington, NC to Little Rock, AR (I-30) all in one trip back in the mid-1990s.  Added two segments in Arizona since then.

Closest full major 2di clinch is I-95 -- just need the last 100 miles in northern Maine.  (Clinched the rerouted PA and NJ portions when the ramps opened . . .)

If that's the trip I'm thinking of, I was with him on that.  It was a cross-the-river and turn around, in part to cross the bridge and in part for him to get Madison Parish (county clinching).  I was living in Picayune, MS at the time and he was staying with me for several weeks while assisting with Hurricane Katrina recovery.

I was in Vicksburg and just crossed over the river, turned around, and went back.  This was probably way back in the late 90's.

Froggie no it wasn't our trip in 2005.  We didn't quite make it to Vicksburg that day but I think we got close.

Yes it was Natchez.  Also drove the first 3-4 miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway that day.

Got stationed in 29 Palms, CA back in my days in the Marine Corps so I drove I-40 from Raleigh to Barstow back in 2007. Have driven (and still sometimes drive) the stretch from Raleigh to Wilmington several times.

It was such a boring drive as far as scenery and sites go that I took I-10/20/85 when I moved back to NC in 2009.

Congratulations!

As for myself, I have not clinched I-40, but I want to clinch that route as well as I-70. As things stand, I have 51% of 40 and 60% of 70.

I-40 is one of the more unusual cross-country Interstates inasmuch as in both directions the major traffic flow exits that route rather than remain on its alignment.  This happens at least twice eastbound:  at OKC, where much of the EB traffic segues onto I-44 toward St. Louis and other upper Midwest points, and at I-81, where much if not most of the traffic, particularly of the commercial variety, simply shifts to I-81, which continues the trajectory of EB I-40 at that point.  Westbound, much traffic (a lot of it coming from SB I-81) simply shifts to SB I-75 SW of Knoxville en route to Chattanooga (and likely I-59).  Since that route parallels the old commercial "shortcut" that was US 11, this phenomenon isn't particularly surprising.  But the greatest shift of WB traffic flow is in the Little Rock (AR) area, with a huge portion of the overall traffic (and much of that of the commercial variety) shifting to I-30, either directly or via I-440 around the south side of town.

The chances are that unless one is making a deliberate cross-country trek on I-40 with the object being a route clinch, exiting the route at one of these points is a likely occurrence.  Personally, I have yet to traverse that portion through Pisgah Gorge between I-81 and US 74 as well as anything east of Asheville (except for the I-85 multiplex); just never had a destination or point of interest along the route.

There is a LOT of truck traffic on I-440, westbound just east of LR. Truckers are wise to use that instead of I-30 because: 65 mph limit vs 60, less vehicles in general (unless they're headed to the airport), road is less curvy vs I-30.

^^ This piqued my curiosity, so I looked at a few of the major traffic splits along I-40 using 2017 HPMS data.

At I-15 in Barstow, about 30% (just under 20K AADT) of traffic splits onto I-40...the remainder stays on (or comes from) I-15 towards Las Vegas.

At the western I-55 junction in West Memphis, AR, there is approximately 29,000 AADT in I-40 "through traffic" versus ~26,000 in I-55 "through traffic".

At the western I-40/I-840 junction west of Nashville, TN, just over 1/4 (just under 13K AADT) of traffic to/from the west splits onto I-840.

At the eastern I-40/I-840 junction near Lebanon, TN, about 1/4 (~18.5K AADT) of traffic to/from the east splits onto I-840.

At the western I-40/I-75 junction near Lenoir City, TN, there is just over 42,000 AADT in I-40 "through traffic" versus just under 57,000 AADT in I-75 "through traffic".  This meshes well with what sparker posted above.

At the I-40/I-81 junction, there is just under 28,000 AADT in I-40 "through traffic" versus around 39,000 AADT in traffic coming to/from the Knoxville area that "stays" on I-81.  This also meshes with sparker's post.

At the western I-40/I-85 junction near Greensboro, NC, there is approximately 83,000 AADT in I-40 "through traffic (although some of this also turns north onto I-840) versus ~45,000 AADT in I-85 "through traffic".  However, truck traffic is close to an even split between the two routes.

At the eastern I-40/I-85 junction west of Durham, NC, there is approximately 69,000 AADT in I-40 "through traffic" versus ~51,000 AADT in I-85 "through traffic".  However, this is also a location where truck traffic is closer to an even split.

I was unable to determine the other major split locations (including OKC and Little Rock) either because of more complex interchanges that included other routes or because they are located in metropolitan areas where local traffic "muddies the waters" and makes determining the volume of through traffic more difficult based just on available AADT data.

^^^^^^^^
Having both lived out in the Apple Valley desert and utilized I-15 countless times, an overall 70/30 traffic split in Barstow seems about right for overall AADT, particularly given Vegas as a weekend recreational destination from greater L.A.  But I'll wager the commercial split is more like 60/40 or even 55/45, since I-40 remains the major trucking conduit east from L.A. distribution facilities.  But it's still likely that a technical majority of that traffic still heads up I-15, since LV is itself a regional commercial distribution center -- and there's still L.A. traffic headed for I-70, the SLC area, or even eastward I-80.

I have currently everything between memphis and flagstaff plus the section between 640 in knoxville to I 26 in asheville (not counting overlaps with I 75 in knox and I 65 in nash). I'm planning on getting everything west of flagstaff this year. I don't foresee anything that would get me all of tennessee and north carolina in the future.

gotta say though that I 40 in western north carolina reminds me a lot of I 80 on the california/nevada border.

Did you happen to get Nashville at the western I-40 and I-65 junction, at the NW corner of the downtown loop?  I seriously don't think the NW quadrant of Briley Pkwy messes this up, and it's a simple directional T interchange.  Plus this is a route that I-69 will supposedly provide relief to once it's finished b/w Memphis and Indianapolis.

^ I didn't do the inside-Nashville junctions because being right in the core of a large urbanized area would skew the results, plus the vast majority of traffic in such cities/locations is local traffic and not through traffic.

To elaborate, my first experience with I-40 was on a family trip to the Outer Banks in the late 1960s. The route was incomplete through North Carolina. The short portion east of US 276 wasn't finished on our first trip; I also think the portion going down the mountain east of Asheville wasn't done either. And, I-40 unceremoniously ended at I-85 in Greensboro. We came back along I-40; as we went to the Outer Banks via I-81 and US 460 so we could visit Appamattox and Williamsburg along the way. We ended up taking VA 168 into North Carolina. On subsequent trips, we used I-40 going east but often varied the route somewhat -- cutting across (I think) NC 98 to reach US 64.

Was the I-40 extension to Raleigh and Wilmington always planned, or was it a later addition to the system? A lot of the old maps of that era did not show a proposed I-40 splitting off what is now the I-85 concurrency. They just showed I-40 ending at I-85.

The extension to I-95 was in NCDOT's 1968 interstate mileage request.

NCDOT approved extending I-40's corridor to Wilmington in 1978.
