Anything analog goes here. NO DIGITAL ALLOWED!

This is a thread to see what your thoughts on analogue technology is. I personally am getting into photography.

For those who don't know, we used to take pictures on this stuff called film. You put it in camera, and you took the picture. Then, when the film was exposed, you put it in different chemicals to get negatives. I really like the proses, and I think it's fun. Right now I am trying to set up a darkroom to print my own pictures.

Did you like analogue better? Did you rediscover it? Or, like me, you never use analogue technology, but once you found it, you fell in love?

Well, shit, I was going to answer, but I couldn't figure out how to get my computer to not encode my text as strings of 0s and 1s, so I guess I can't post.

I much prefer analog CCTV technology.  For the time being it is far more reliable than IP cameras and infinitely easier to fix if something breaks down.  The trouble is that analog CCTV parts largely aren't being produced anymore and which has led to people like me hoarding whatever they can get their hands on.

I had an old "digital" alarm clock radio that actually was analog but displayed numerals and flipped the numbers over by the minute. Like a dog, it was my best clock ever.

Does that count one way or the other?

Scott5114

I still have one of those flip clocks (bought it new less than 10 years ago). Unfortunately it's the least reliable clock in the house so I can't really use it for anything.

I love my 1990s Zenith Console CRT television set.  But, as you can see from the photo, all the signals going into it are digital (and so is the clock sitting on top of it), so I guess it doesn't really count.

I've always worn an analog wristwatch; I won't buy a digital one.

Years ago, a kid asked me the time and I said it was "ten to five."  He couldn't comprehend that.  I had to say "4:50."

I've always been rather irritated when times are quoted like that. If you have 90 of something you don't say "I have ten less than a hundred," or if you have 75¢ you don't say you have a "quarter til". Time shouldn't be any different.

An interesting thing about analog watches or clocks.  If you see someone look at their watch, ask them what time it is.  They will probably have to look at it again.  That's because the brain is working on analog setting too.  Looking at the watch doesn't set the brain to thinking in terms of numbers of hours or minutes.  It just looks at where the hands are pointing and "knows" the time.  But if you have to tell someone it's 4:50 (or ten to 5), your brain has to work to convert the analog that it sees into digits.

And "half past four" is certainly better than the British version "half four".

Even worse: German "half four" (translated) means 3:30.
