Title: High Profile Construction Projects 2018
Post by: webny99 on April 27, 2018, 09:18:52 PM
What are the most important, say top five or so, road construction projects for your state in 2018?
And by way of extension, what are the highest profile projects nation-wide?

Extensive discussion can probably be saved for the regional boards, but I thought it would be good to know about some of the really major (interstate system) projects nationwide, now that construction season is underway  :D

Only one big one in my area, that being the I-490/I-390/NY 390/NY 31 interchange: lanes are being added, new ramps built to NY 31, and eventually about 3/4 mile of new southbound roadway.

It's always construction season in Hawaii. But hardly any road construction.

Only significant project is the newest segment of the Lahaina Bypass (HI 3000) in west Maui, opened earlier this week but still some finishing touches remaining. Other projects are still in environmental reviews.

For VA its by far the Transform I-66 project(construction just began and is expected to last until late 2022). The Rappahannock River Crossing Project(southbound) on I-95 is probably a distant #2, with the continued widening of I-64 up to Williamsburg #3.

I-5 in Seattle is being repaved over weekend-long closures and lane reductions

The I-90 express lanes are being converted to light rail use

The SR 520 project is moving into the next phase (rebuilding the SR 513/Montlake interchange and replacing the eastbound approach bridge)

The SR 99 Tunnel is scheduled to open in October, followed by demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct

In Alabama, nothing tops the construction at the I-65/I-20/59 interchange in Birmingham.  It's been going on since 2016 and won't be completed until 2020.  Ramps are under construction that will drastically alter access to downtown from both I-20/59 and I-65, then later this year I-20/59 will be closed through downtown as the elevated roadway that was built in 1973 will be torn down and rebuilt.  In advance through traffic being rerouted onto I-459 around the city, that route is being repaved from Bessemer to Hoover.

There are many projects ongoing in California, here's what I can come up with, in no particular order:

Construction of a new highway routing over the Mud Creek slide that impacted CA 1 last year, expected to finish this fall.

Construction of the Centennial Corridor to connect the Westside Parkway with CA-58 in Bakersfield, both west and east of CA 99.

In San Francisco the Bus Rapid Transit construction has been ongoing since 2016 at Van Ness Avenue, AKA US 101.

Construction of a new expressway routing for CA 58 at Kramer Junction just started at January this year. (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18308.msg2296483#msg2296483)

Various projects (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjDEWfQyokc) being done to improve interchanges and lanes at I-5 in Los Angeles County, expected to finish at 2020. Maybe by then it will be more than six lanes at that area.

The Sonoma-Marin Narrows project has been ongoing for at least 3 to 4 years to widen US 101 between Novato and Petaluma from 4 to 6 lanes, and get rid of the remaining at-grade intersections there.

For Utah, the top projects this year include:

- I-15 Technology Corridor reconstruction
- I-215 NW quadrant reconstruction (including a new DDI)
- New SB lane on I-15 in SL County
- Climbing lane on WB I-80, Parleys Summit
- Mountain View Corridor construction in Utah County
- Several interchanges on Bangerter Highway

Iowa:

I-74 bridge replacement between Bettendorf and Moline, IL began construction last year and is expected through 2021

The I-80/I-380 interchange near Iowa City is being converted from a cloverleaf to a turbine over the next several years, with construction beginning this year

If I understand it correctly, the DOT is doing a major overhaul of the Interstates in Council Bluffs, including a 12-lane (3+3+3+3) multiplex between I-29 and I-80. I think they've been working on that for a few years, but it could be another few years before it's complete.

Nevada has two major high-profile projects going on this year, both of which have been ongoing for a couple years now:

(1) I-11/US 93 Boulder City Bypass - completion expected in October 2018

(2) Project Neon (I-15 reconstruction/widening & HOV flyover to US 95) - ongoing, with "the main event" (greatest traffic impacts to I-15) going from March 2018 through most of the rest of the year.

TX:
(There are more than the following, but what I know of)

* I-35E, I-635 to US 380 (redoing as well as adding tolled express lanes; most of what is left is around and south of Denton for now)
* I-35E, downtown Dallas to US 67 exit & US 67, I-35E to I-20 (the "Southern Gateway" is just getting going; redo/widening of both freeways, structure preparation for a future deck park between Marsalis and Ewing exits... will take around ~3 years)
* I-35W, downtown Fort Worth to US 81-US 287 split (redoing as well as adding tolled express lanes; the remainder of work is around downtown and just to the north)
* US 380, Dallas N. Tollway to TX 289-Preston Rd. (elevated lanes over Preston (not sure of what will be done at the Tollway), making the stretch more like a freeway)
* TX 121/TX 360 (one of the last parts of the "DFW Connector" project; mainly redo with making ramps and approaches better)
* TX 183, FM 157 to near I-35E (redoing/widening as well as adding tolled express lanes)
* Loop 335, Amarillo (eventually the city and TxDOT want all the loop to be freeway; currently work from the area of the I-27 interchange over to the FM 1541-Washington St. exit into a freeway-style with service roads and grade separations)

I-95 Moses Wheeler (Housatonic River) Bridge
I-91/CT 15 interchange reconstruction in Hartford (due to start 5/28)

Pretty sure the I-91/CT 15 interchange got put on hold indefinitely due to the transportation fund depletion.  A contract was to be let this spring for the project but it never appeared in the bid docs.  The Moses Wheeler replacement is all done for the most part - drove over it earlier in the week.  No more construction signs up and things pretty much wrapped up "above deck".    There are, however, 3 active sign replacement contracts currently underway:  CT 8-Derby to Waterbury, I-84-Southington to Farmington, I-91-Groton to RI state line.

Vermont:
Replacement of the I-91 bridges over the Williams River in Rockingham is the big one, going on Year 2.

New Hampshire:
Continued widening of I-93 between Salem and Manchester, though much of the southern half is done.
Continued widening of the Spaulding Tpke in Newington and Dover, concentrating primarily in the Dover area.

In INDIANA, the top 5 current projects are listed on INDOT's website (in no particular order)  as follows:
■ I-69/IN 37 Section 5: Bloomington to Martinsville, hoping to wrap up by August 31, 2018 (finally!)
■ I-65 Added travel lanes between IN 2 & US 30 in NW Indiana
■ I-65/I-70 NE Split in Indy, a massive rehab & overpass removals (structures built in the 1970s for ghost ramps originally intended prat of the never-built NE Freeway out to I-69 in Castleton)
■ US 33 relocation in downtown Elkhart
■ US 41 rehab in Evansville, including the SB Ohio River Bridge (which is actually in KY)

Minneapolis
I-35W: Year 2 of a 5-year reconstruction and improvement project between 46th St and I-94.

This is pretty much the only "major"  project in the state this year. Outstate, the gradual MN 60 widening in Southwest Minnesota will be completed.

The reconstruction of the I-80/I-680/CA 12 interchange complex in Cordelia is just breaking ground; this is an approximately 3-year project.  Also, the seeming perpetual work on I-580 between Pleasanton and the I-205 junction continues -- but traffic always seems to overwhelm that stretch by the time any phase is completed.  Finally, new HOV lanes -- parallel to the toll/express lanes -- are being constructed on I-680 between Fremont and Sunol (essentially CA 262 to CA 84).  For San Jose locals, expect this last project to result in a multitude of whining missives by commuters to the local "Roadshow" column in the Mercury "Murky" News.  Sometimes folks just don't understand that to make a proper omelet, eggs must be broken in the process!

NJDOT's main high-profile, high-dollar construction projects really haven't changed much for the past several years: The Pulaski Skyway and the 295/76/42 interchange project.

You can consider the I-95 resigning a high-profile project that is quick and easy.

The GSP will be wrapping up the southern end of their 45 mile widening project.

Illinois. US 34 Freeway is shut down and traffic is being diverted to Illinois 164 old 34 until October. There are sporadic closures on 34 around Galesburg and near Biggsville as well as 4 laning in Kendall county. If you want to include the 110 which includes part of 34 there is the Macomb bypass opening. 74 was mentioned in Iowa.

Kansas:

The Lewis and Clark Viaduct (WB I-70) reconstruction project began in February and will continue for two years. Subsequent phases of the project will replace the EB viaduct and eliminate the "death curve."

The transition to open-road tolling on the Kansas Turnpike continues this year. The eastern terminal (MM 217) conversion was completed a few months ago. The East Topeka (MM 183) project is currently underway and is expected to be completed this coming November. The southern terminal project will take place in 2019.

The third major project is the East Kellogg (US-54/400) improvements in Wichita. By 2021, Kellogg will be a full freeway between the KTA toll plaza and K-96. The project also includes improved access to the Kansas Turnpike. Project overview and timeline: http://eastkelloggimprovements.com/about

Not sure what you mean by "a level down", but it sounds kind of insulting. I-390/I-490/NY 31 impacts way more of the motoring public than Prospect Mountain. Pretty sure it has more new roadway mileage, too, and if you're talking about importance, it's badly needed.

In Tennessee, I can think of three off the top of my head:

- Memfix 4 project for I-240 in east Memphis, replacing the Poplar Avenue bridges and the Norfolk Southern bridge and rehabilitating the Park Avenue bridge. Work started in January with total ABC closures starting this summer. Project completion June 2019
- I-440 reconstruction in Nashville, replacing the old concrete with asphalt, removing the grassy median, and widening to 6 lanes throughout (this is badly needed, especially on the bridge through the I-65 stack). Project completion 2021
- I-75/I-24 interchange project in Chattanooga, reconfiguring the interchange to eliminate confusing weaving patterns (and emphasize 75 as the thru route). Project completion unknown

I'd put them closer on par with each other.  Sure 390/490 has more traffic, has congestion issues, and is needed, but it didn't involve a major river bridge or adding C/D roads across that river, or blasting the side of a mountain.

In terms of intensity/volume of work being done, I'd give that title to 81/17/Prospect Mtn...

Prospect Mountain is also fixing a major safety issue and is under the I-86 banner.  It's definitely a major project - there's a reason why both phases put together are taking over a decade to complete!

NY 155 is more commonly known as the Exit 4 flyover.  That exit is pretty congested.  Exit 4 SB and the ramp to I-87 NB both tend to back up quite a bit in rush hour, the latter of which causes congestion on both the mainline and Wolf Road.

Yeah, no question that Tappan Zee and Prospect Mountain are the top two statewide. But I-390/I-490 is still a fairly large-scale rehab; no matter how you define your "levels", it must be somewhere in the top ten projects.

I'm grasping at straws for Maryland.  Nothing is really that high profile.

But a project that's supposed to commence this year is upgrading US 219 from I-68 to the PA state line.
http://apps.roads.maryland.gov/WebProjectLifeCycle/ProjectInformation.aspx?projectno=GA6465211

And reconstruct the I-270/MD 85 interchange starts this year:

In progress is widening I-81 at the Potomac River:

And ongoing work on the SW quadrant of the Baltimore Beltway I-695.

And the new exit 12 for I-270 is underway:

For many years there has been a part of Watkins Mill Road on the south side of I-270 as well which ends at MD 117:
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1475575,-77.233301,3a,36y,67.86h,90.96t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sxTuBrl_fgFapOlfJPRuiJg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
Historical Aerials shows the first part of that road in as far back as 1989.  It was extended over the RR tracks much more recently (around 2007).  The north of I-270 part which you referred to was built around 2011. The county has been waiting for the state to build this for a long time.  It's needed to relieve the MD 355/ MD 124 intersection.

For NY, the second span of the Kosciuszko Bridge has begun.  Also the ongoing project to replace several bridges on the Belt Parkway.  And as part of the LaGuardia Airport Terminal B project, a completely new road network (https://www.earthcam.net/projects/laguardia/p2garage/rwd.php?cam=p2garage) is being constructed.

On the NJ side, in addition to the others mentioned, there's the ongoing Wittpenn Bridge (NJ 7) replacement.

For North Carolina, specifically western NC, definitely the US 321 widening. It has been going for over 10 years, and they are finally 98% done! The last section has 4-lane road markings, but cones still form a 2-lane road. It can only be a matter of time now until 321 is 4 lanes all the way from Lenoir to Boone!

In no particular order, the biggest things in Georgia right now are probably

  • Completion of the I-75/I-575 express lanes
  • I-285/GA 400 interchange reconstruction
  • I-16/I-75 interchange reconstruction
  • Extension of I-85 express lanes
  • Widening of the northernmost freeway portion of GA 400. There are also plans for a new interchange at GA 369, but I'm not sure if that's part of this project or a separate one.

I'm not sure of the status of this proposal/project or if it is all talk, but an I-16/I-95 interchange reconstruction may soon make the list as well. It's possible it is still a ways into a future for now, though.

Western Colorado traveling along I-70 will see a good share of single-lane/crossover construction zones due to bridge and/or pavement rebuilds between Eagle and Palisade.  Surprisingly, I have seen no mention of resurfacing of an extremely rough stretch of I-70 between Parachute and DeBeque.  US-6, which parallels I-70 in that stretch was paved last year and is a much better drive, albeit 20 MPH slower than the interstate.

I really thought they stopped funding for the Zoo Interchange project. Is it still going on?

There was a phase involving I-41 north of the interchange that was killed, but the rest of it will be completed.

Oklahoma: I-35/I-240 Interchange reconstruction which will convert the full cloverleaf into a parclo with two flyovers and widen I-240 to six through lanes over I-35. This project, like many others in Oklahoma, is being strung out into tons of phases and is scheduled for completion in the early 2020s.

I-40 Crosstown/OKC Boulevard: the only remaining work is for the Boulevard which will wrap up the largest construction project in the state's history. The OKC Boulevard will be a four lane Boulevard with an elevated structure built on the west end. Should be finished in a year or two.

I-35/I-44 interchange: starts this year and will rebuild the entire interchange moving the ramps to the right side of the I-35 mainline and joining it together removing the large grassy median. Will widen multiple ramps and rebuild several bridges over the Deep Fork Creek. I'm not sure when it's scheduled for completion.

I-44/I-235 Interchange: will rebuild the entire interchange to a 3 level stack and add C/D lanes. Completion is set for early 2020s.

Kilpatrick Extension: will extend the Kilpatrick turnpike in SW OKC.

EOC Turnpike: eastern Oklahoma county turnpike will be a new 21 mile fully controlled access facility connecting from I-44 to I-40.

I-40 east OKC widening: will widen I-40 from Midwest city to Shawnee to six lanes and replace several interchanges.

There is also a project with US-69 in McAlester that will convert a mile or so to a freeway or something. I can't remember but it's a fairly large project.

In addition to the I-95/PA Turnpike interchange and Scudder Falls Bridge mentioned earlier in the thread, in PA we've also got the US 422 Schuylkill River bridge project near Valley Forge, and finally some work started on the big I-83 Master Plan with the widening from Union Deposit Road to I-81.

EDIT: There's also the US 322 Potters Mills project, the north section of the CSVT including the Susquehanna River bridge, and they're slowly but surely completing Turnpike 576/Southern Beltway from US 22 to I-79. Also US 219 Meyersdale to Somerset.

PA cannot be mentioned without CSVT (http://www.csvt.com/) being mentioned.

Among other things, this project will all but eliminate the congestion through Shamokin Dam, and provide full expressway route from Baltimore, MD to Rochester, NY (with a few exceptions: after CSVT is complete, this (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.4029474,-77.0104288,3a,75y,17.4h,88.7t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sjvAwNjA5s-iUNkozU2s7zA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656), this (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.4340222,-76.9987013,3a,75y,17.01h,84.72t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sIrv3_exeQa0K3leFc-SUEg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656), and this (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.571789,-76.9908063,3a,75y,39.25h,79.6t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sac2Vg0Kznl03iOaAY0KM4Q!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3Dac2Vg0Kznl03iOaAY0KM4Q%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D101.535126%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656) will be the sole undivided segments on this entire corridor). It will also be traffic-signal-free for the first time!

(Also, CSVT brings us one step closer to designating I-83 along this corridor  :sombrero:)

I drove thru there over the weekend on the way to/from Buffalo, and the work is moving along.  Looks like 5 spans in the center of the bridge are complete, at least the girders have been placed.

The northern section will provide a good bypass of the Lewisburg area.  The Shamokin Dam area on US-11/US-15 is amazingly congested given the modest population of the area.

The US-11/US-15 section between Amity Hall and Selinsgrove is expressway-like, but not an expressway or even with a limited access right-of-way.  There are occasional driveways.  It is a nonlimited-access highway with high-grade access management features.

Quote from: Beltway on June 28, 2018, 04:17:05 PMThe Shamokin Dam area on US-11/US-15 is amazingly congested given the modest population of the area.

There's really three factors at play here:
(1) Heavy thru traffic from Harrisburg and the Balt-Wash corridor bound for Upstate NY and Ontario. This includes high volumes of truck traffic, especially due to (a) US 219 being infeasible for long distance truckers and (b) I-81 running northeast beyond Harrisburg.
(2) An extensive string of closely-spaced and poorly-timed traffic signals, which trucks accelerate from rather slowly. The area is a regional shopping destination; many of the lights are at plazas and shopping centers rather than through streets, meaning most traffic is forced to return to US 15 to exit the area. The net result is not enough green time allocated to US 11/15, especially in the afternoon hours.
(3) The convergence of several important corridors, namely PA 147, PA 61, US 522, and, of course, US 11 and US 15. In addition, all southbound traffic is forced west of the river at PA 61, due to PA 147 being an unviable thru route south of there.

All told, you have an unbelievable bottleneck in an area that really doesn't have that much population. It's probably next only to Breezewood in terms of being a massively underbuilt roadway at an important juncture.

In Minnesota besides I-35W south of downtown there's the I-35W Minnesota River Bridge Replacement. Also replacement of the Winona and Red Wing bridges over the Mississippi and restoration of the Stillwater Lift Bridge.

Can't forget to mention the ongoing improvement to/expansion of I-5 SE of central L.A.; the project started in the '90's down in OC and has moved northwest one section at a time.  Looks like the section between I-605 and I-710 is slated to be the next to see activity starting this year, including a long-overdue revision of the 5/710 interchange.  However, due to localized political opposition, the section from I-710 to the ELA interchange (with some bridges displaying their 1947 build date!) is not likely to see much in the way of capacity improvement (about half of that stretch lies within the City of Los Angeles, which isn't the most hospitable environment for freeway expansion activity these days); the repaving job of a few years back is about the limits of what can be done without extensive -- not to mention problematic and ultimately costly -- acquisition of adjoining properties.  It's been restriped to 5+5 -- but at the cost of narrow (11' or slightly under) lanes.  But with the revamping of the 710 interchange, it should make utilizing an alternate route (710 to 60 being the likely choice) a bit easier.

Another big Southern California construction project, just getting under way, is the I-405 expansion in Orange County to add a general purpose and carpool/toll lane each direction.
