Title: Is gum food?
Post by: bandit957 on May 26, 2021, 06:06:17 PM
Is gum food? I would argue that it is.

Gum is not designed to be swallowed whole, and you can blow bubbles with it. But the flavoring is inevitably swallowed. Therefore, gum is food.

It is a food, but it is also a toy. People sit there for hours on end blowing bubs with it like a boss.

Also, in high school, the teacher gave us all a list of rules that prohibited "gum or other food" in the classroom. Thus, gum was characterized as food. But she mentioned gum specifically because she was tired of people blowing bubbles and spitting bubble gum on the floor.

Yes, it digests and has caloric value.

No, because you spit it out.

How is it not? Gum isn't the only food designed to be spit out, and you don't even have to do that.

What other food is designed to be spit out?

If I counted correctly, 46 of his OPs mention gum, excluding the photo catalog threads.

Not hundreds, but a lot.

The FDA says it is. See the Nutrition (food) facts label on it! By the way so is candy. The FDA views MOST cough drops and antacids (Maalox, Tums, etc.) as candy (food) as well.

For all intents and purposes, gum is food, however I see how some may say it isn't.

It won't fill you up if you are hungry.

It's food if you swallow it.

It's a toy if you spit it out.

Yes, but I wouldn't call it a toy. I guess it is kind of a toy for the mouth.

We should follow Singapore's lead and ban chewing gum. Hate seeing it all over sidewalks, especially since I've stepped in some more than once.

We should not ban a near-harmless substance merely because it's mildly annoying when not disposed of properly.

Dogs like gum. One day, my dog chewed a piece of bubble gum. He chewed it for about 15 minutes and then spit it out on the carpet. But he didn't bubble.
