SP Cook

FIAT is, in Italian Fabbrica Italiano Automobili de Torino, or in rough English Italian Automobile Factory in Turin.

Fiat money, which is to say money not backed by gold or other actually valuable physical items, is an unrelated term.

around here we have "˜king stupids' (king soopers) and "˜spaceway' (safeway).

untapped territory: blackjack pizza ... seems it could almost write itself

As for portmanteaus:
Bed Bath and Body Works

A positive example: this station in North Reading, MA is called either "the Tuesday station" or "the Thursday station"; I forget which, since it's been so long. It's 5¢ cheaper on that day (actually 4 or 6; their prices always end in an odd digit), cheap in general even if it's not that day, and full serve (full serve stations are typically more expensive here). While it doesn't matter to me, it's also the only station I know of where the difference between grades 87 and 89 is still only 10¢.

It's caused backups on Route 28.
Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

I know that gas station. I live really close to there. Yes, I have heard that phrase. Backups there are very common because it's the cheapest in the area.
Decommission 128 south of Peabody!

Lowest untraveled number: 56

Favorite derogatory terms for Detroit's Big Three:

Fix Or Repair Daily

Fudging Old Rebuilt Dodge (only they didn't day fudge...)
I absolutely LOL'ed at someone's comment in the other thread...

My grampa worked for GM for 40 years, so of course I grew up knowing "Found On Road Dead" and "Fix Or Repair Daily". I've also heard "F*cker Only Runs Downhill", and one that I won't repeat because it's positive for the brand.

To this day, my biggest regret was buying that Explorer in '94; I didn't feel safe in it at all. And being a GM loyalist myself, I switched to a Tahoe after four years or so.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

We owned a Tempo in the mid-90s and it's the last Ford I'll ever own.  I probably won't buy an American car again unless it's a Challenger.

What are some common nicknames for retail businesses?

Some of the more popular ones are...

  • McDonald's -> Mickey D's
  • Wal-Mart -> Wally World
  • Target -> Tar-Zhay (think of Target with a French accent)
  • Kroger (grocery) -> Kay-Roger's

I live in Cincinnati, where Kroger is headquartered, and I have NEVER heard anyone call it Kay-Rogers.  A lot of people do call it KrogerS, which drives some other people crazy.

I like to pronounce Kroger like if I'm pronouncing it like Roger.

I also hate when people put an S on Kroger, Krystal, etc.

My brothers and I used to call Kmart Kame-apart because their merchandise was so cheap.

A few others we had:
Booger Fling for Burger King
Wally World or Wal-fart for Walmart
Pizza Slut for Pizza Hut
Taco Hell for Taco Bell

A couple different grocery store chains in our area:
SuperSlaver for SuperSaver (The chain is now long gone)
Pick 'n Slave or Pick 'n Scratch for Pick 'n Save

And I'm sure there are others I've forgotten over the past 30+ years

CapeCodder

Wal-Fart
K-Shart
"Bouchard's"- My grandfather used this name for a tractor supply type place called Buckheit Supply

GenExpwy

I have seen "Golden sphincter"  for Walmart.

I used to refer to K-mart as "Kresge's".
The "K" in Kmart stands for Kresge.  And there was a five and dime store called Kresge.

I remember one Acronym created for the defunct department store chain in NYC once called EJ Korvette.  I won't say it because it could be considered anti semitic being it involves an ethnic group, but the Korvette part is referred to as Korean War Veterans.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.
