TX: New Spurs created on OLD US 380 W of Greenville

TxDOT recently realigned US 380 just west of Greenville, creating a new grade separation at the railroad. The surprising thing is that they created two new spurs on the former US 380 alignment. There are two spurs because the railroad crossing on the old alignment was eliminated. It is surprising that the old alignment was not taken off the state highway system. Texas seems to hold on to old alignments way more frequently than other states, but this takes it to a whole nuther level.

I've always been curious what the long term plans were for 380 through or around Greenville. Seems like a heavily traveled route between I-30 and McKinney.

Once that section is done in Farmersville at the railroad bridge and Main Street, US 380 will be 4 lanes from McKinney to I-30.

That's true, and in fact, work on 380 west of Denton is under way which will make it four-lane all the way to Decatur.

And more work underway to widen it to 6 lanes from the Collin/Denton county line east to the current end of the 6 lane portion just west of Custer.

How recent is this? The 2012 Mapbook includes the spurs. Have they only recently been signed?

I haven't been on that section of road since 2007. Google just recently updated, and it now shows them.

Although it would be very difficult to do, TX-DOT eventually will have to upgrade much if not all of US-380 between Decatur and Greenville into a limited access super highway. There's so much development going on North of Dallas-Fort Worth that they really need to start working on ROW acquisition and corridor preservation. As it is, they'll probably have to loop around a lot of development that has already encroached upon the US-380 corridor.

US 380 is really a great way to bypass Dallas when going west from Louisiana and going to either I-35 to OKC and points north onward to US 287 and the panhandle.  The more of a faster freeway they can make it the better it will be.

Or I-49 to Texarkana and pick up US 82 from I-30. US 380 is miserable to drive through McKinney and Denton and there's construction all over the place. The only real bad part along US 82 is in Gainesville, and it's nothing near as bad as what you face on US 380.

I haven't tried than one yet.  Next time I go that way I'll give it a try.

There *might* be a need for a numbered road where Spur 137 is, but I'm stunned that TxDOT approved, much less bothered with, something as short as Spur 138.  Here's the Street View extent of it: http://goo.gl/maps/8F1dU ...just up to where that now-previous RR signal is, and that's IT.  If the historic US 380 were still complete between its termini, I could see maybe having a numbered designation of some kind, but now it's been neutered at the RR crossing. 

(Strangely enough, Spur 138 isn't the shortest numbered (as in TxDOT designated, not county designated) road in TX.  That belongs to Loop 168 in the downtown part of Tenaha, stretching a whole city block (looking SW from Loop 157: http://goo.gl/maps/bESlk ); this is the only sign I could find on Street View: http://goo.gl/maps/bu52M .)
