Former US Route 101 through Atascadero and Santa Margarita was aligned on El Camino Real through both communities.  Both Atascadero and Santa Margarita were bypassed by the current freeway alignment of US Route 101 which was completed in early 1957.   From 1964 to 2003 California State Route 41 inherited a small segment of former US Route 101 on El Camino Real in downtown Atascadero.  California State Route 178 was extended through Santa Margarita on El Camino Real in 1957 but was replaced by California State Route 58 in 1964.

Having driven most of this in Atascadero, I feel this would be a good US 101H candidate like in Paso Robles, if not 101B.

Hell, even throw a 466H on West Mall even though it was never signed.  That is a beautiful downtown area they have centered around the Sunken Garden.

Basically, did 466 only exist on signage east of Creston and on the 46 segment from Paso Robles-Shandon and on 41 between 101 and 1?

According to the AASHO database it when it was on LRN 125 it was never actually signed between Shandon and Atascadero.

I'm sure if you were alive back then, you would've dismissed the whole 101 Freeway project as impossible.

Actually I think that I probably would have been more surprised that freeway development of US 101 ground to a halt during the late 1970s considering the momentum it had in the two prior decades.

When I read Max's posts on 101, it is always neat to see the year that a freeway bypass was put in place.
