Just a connector. US 27 has gone to shit and there are no good connections to 429 between 192 and 50.
This is why US 27 should be upgraded into a limited-access highway at least between US 192 and 50, instead of building all the other crap they're building around there. I'd almost consider extending the upgrade to I-4.

IMHO, if anything is in need of an upgrade, it's US-27 south of I-4 and north of the new Toll 516 connector. It appears that your proposal would do a similar job to what 516, 429, and I-4 express will do, provided that they work properly in tandem. What do you think? :hmmm:
That wouldn't be such a bad idea either, although I'm not sure how far south the upgrade should go. I'd be willing to consider as far south as SR 60. South of that, while there's certainly some suburban sprawl, I'm not sure the traffic gets bad enough to require turning the road into a limited-access highway.

Quote from: Alex on April 24, 2024, 01:51:38 PMFollowing over six and half years of construction, the Gateway Expressway (SR 686A/690) in Pinellas is finally set to open this Friday!

QuoteAccording to the Florida Department of Transportation, the new toll roads and I-275 Express Lanes are expected to open to traffic on Friday, April 26.

The Gateway Expressway not only connects U.S. 19 and I-275 but also directly connects the Bayside Bridge — north of 49th Street N. — to I-275.

Opened today as planned! Just clinched 686A headed "westbound." I'll get some pictures soon.

IMHO it's an EXTREMELY impressive project overall, lots of room for future expansion.

Pensacola construction on I-10 at US 29 starts.

Did they make the speed limit 50MPH again?

Drove both legs in both directions yesterday afternoon and the I-275 Express lanes from SR 686 north and south. The toll road system is toll free until May 3.

The posted 40 MPH speed limit ln the flyovers at the west end of SR 690 at U.S. 19 was a surprise. I easily drove the flyover at 60 MPH.

No reassurance markers posted on either, but two for CR 296 westbound remain. I posted some of what I shot on the AARoads facebook page after I got back yesterday. Will add them to AARoads this weekend.

Alex

Got around to posting a lot of what I shot yesterday for the Gateway Expressway.

SR 686A: https://www.aaroads.com/guides/fl-686a/
SR 690: https://www.aaroads.com/guides/fl-690/

Also added photos covering US 19 south at SR 690, SR 686 west at CR 611 and started updating I-275 to show the new Express Lanes and signage for the Gateway Expressway before running out of time.
https://www.aaroads.com/updates/

I'll get to the rest of I-275 at SR 690 and CR 611 south at SR 686A soon.

Found this on my travels... I don't recall SR-694 having a toll. :pan:

Maybe. They've signed short routes in Miami-Dade before. SR 960 and SR 925 are signed.

Wasn't paying attention. However people in Florida like anywhere else, don't look for those signs and do whatever.

I was in the exclusive express lane on nearby I-275 doing 70 where I saw it was 60. Some guy behind me was outraged and when I passed the Gateway Expressway on ramp as he then misused the acceleration lane for a passing lane to pass me as if 70 mph was a school zone speed limit and I was too slow.

Only 686A near the airport, and part of the old CR-296 alignment is posted at 50. The rest, not including ramps posted at 35-45, is posted at 55. Also, the old CR-296 section is proposed to be 55 as well; I think they haven't gotten around to replacing the sign yet (that also includes the leftover construction slowdown to 35 headed westbound). I'm hoping that the 50 zones will be given a second look with speed collection data, because as of now, 50 feels VERY slow on the Expressway.

I-275 speed limits are kinda all over the place. It will eventually be 65 (Express & Local), but are half-posted at 60 due to "construction." Again, I'm thinking they just haven't gotten around to removing the 60 signs yet.

Source: I got ahold of some of the engineering documents for the sign plans.

On that note,

Beautiful engineering for this amazing freeway. But damn that single express lane. We've already talked about this in another thread but seriously why not just have variable tolling on each lane? A single express toll lane on a toll road? Jesus christ.

I'm fairly certain the toll lanes are on I-275, not the new toll road. But agreed about the single express lane - same points I made in the Michigan thread.

I assume the blank spaces are for additional destinations once the express lanes on the Howard Frankland Bridge are open. Do we know what those will be yet? Is the plan to add an express lane along I-275 to downtown Tampa?

The I-275 Express Lanes will be extended as part of the new Howard Frankland Bridge being constructed through late 2025. They will tie into the planned reconstruction of the West Shore Interchange joining I-275 and SR 60 (Kennedy Blvd / Memorial Hwy). Work at I-275/SR 60 is anticipated to start later this year.
