And, for the third time in four years, my mother and I were huddled in the bathroom. This time, it was hurricane-force winds, not a tornado.

Currently -1C/30F and overcast. There's a winter storm warning, with snow expected to start in an hour.

QuoteSignificant winter storm with dangerous travel conditions beginning late this afternoon or early evening.

Hazards: Significantly reduced visibility due to heavy snow and blowing snow. Total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 25 cm. Snowfall rates of 4 to 6 cm/h possible. Rapidly accumulating snowfall creating hazardous travel conditions.

Timing: Late this afternoon into Saturday morning. The most dangerous conditions are expected this evening when snowfall rates may be 4 to 6 cm/h at times.

Looking at the 14-day forecast, it looks like winter is here to stay for a while, with highs averaging 0-1C / 32-34F.

Winter storm in Michigan looks like the Metro Detroit area got the most. Flint got hammered pretty good but the further north you go the less snow from this storm.

Is there any snow on the ground around Boston?

I live outside of Boston, and the answer is yes, sort of. There is snow on the ground, but the temps are above freezing, so it isn't sticking.

A couple shots looking up and down the street this morning, just a few steps from my front door, after another foot of snow overnight.  I have lived in this house for 10 years now and I believe this is the greatest depth we've had in that time.

At 23°F this is very lightweight powdery snow so it's easy to move quite a bit of it.  The flip side of that is that gusts of wind pick it up very easily and create instant whiteouts, and that would help explain the closure of I-80 over the Sierra for much of this weekend.

Wow, that looks spectacular! Not something I'd want to deal with regularly, but would be cool to experience.

BROWNSVILLE:       92 high (+13); 72 low (+11)
CORPUS CHRISTI:   90 high (+13); 70 low (+10)
LAREDO:                95 high (+13); 71 low (+14)
McALLEN:               96 high (+14); 73 low (+12)

Both Laredo and McAllen have seen 14 days of 90+ degrees this year, which is way ahead of schedule.....on average both cities see four to six days for the first two months of a year.
Furthermore, locations in the RGV area have seen at least ten nights where the overnight lows remained at or above 70 degrees, again way ahead of schedule.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"
