What is the point of a "red flag warning" anyway, and why is it a warning and not a watch if there are no fires?

Typical Spring weather, although slightly above normal for this time of the year as indicated below.

                                     ACTUAL                         AVERAGE

BROWNSVILLE:       92 high; 75 low                  88 high; 69 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:   93 high; 74 low                  85 high; 68 low
LAREDO:                96 high; 73 low                  92 high; 66 low
MCALLEN:              94 high; 74 low                  90 high; 69 low

Dew Points hovering around 70 degrees means Heat Index is approaching or slightly exceeding 100 degrees.  Great day to be at the beaches with mostly cloudy skies and winds ranging 20-25 MPH and some gusts well over 30 MPH.  All this juice in the air mass can potentially fire off several thunderstorms, and combined with winds, a few might be supercells.

We had a tornado outbreak today across Central Oklahoma. Nothing tornadic hit my area, but I lost some siding to straight-line winds. There was a fatality in Cole, and there has been a decent amount of damage in Pottawatomie County. My old high school in Washington is being used as a shelter for those who lost their homes. Classes are cancelled tomorrow across much of McClain County.

A red flag warning indicates a combination of dry conditions with high winds, and the warning is to indicate that people should not attempt to burn trash, start campfires, controlled burns, etc. because they could easily lose control of them.

There's no watch/warning distinction when it comes to wildfires.  With a tornado warning, there's either a tornado already identified, or the conditions are so incredibly ripe for tornados that one could develop at a moment's notice.  This isn't the same with wildfires:  they don't just spontaneously develop, but rather they need to be ignited, therefore a watch and a warning would mean the same thing.  The question, really, is whether the concept is closer to that of a tornado/hurricane "watch" or "warning".

Rainy season has been just around the corner for the last few weeks here in Okinawa. So far it has been relatively dry apart from a few really intense thunderstorms.

Sunny and low 80s today, still humid though. Highs around 78-80 and lows around 73 every day into the future.

Fire watches/warnings are treated more towards the "hurricane" timeframe. If fire conditions are forecasted in the future, a fire weather watch is usually issued a day or two ahead of it. Then that is either upgraded to a red flag warning or dropped depending on how RH values and winds are the day of.

The Storm Prediction Center has a great fire forecasting setup, they do similar Day 1, 2 and 3 and D4-8 periods like with severe thunderstorm forecasts.

Picture perfect temperatures across South Texas -- not hot and not cold.....just right!  Moderately humid with dew points around 70 degrees, might fire off a couple of isolated thunderstorms tonight.  Heat Index could top out not more than 100 degrees in a couple of places
