It's demolished now but there's a service plaza off I-77 North a bit past Princeton (@ MM17) that's now just a parking lot and some rubble. It's currently being remodeled, so it'll be back in some time

US 50 in Illinois just west of the Indiana border.  The 1999 Google Earth imagery shows the building, but the 2003 imagery does not.

I noticed on W bound I-70 the rest area in OH right before the IN boarder is gone

Quote from: sirrobyn0 on December 18, 2023, 10:49:01 PMOk I've got a couple more I'd like to share in Washington and then I'll hit a couple I know about in Oregon.

So I don't remember this rest stop, or wayside, but I've had a few people give me vague information about it and maybe just maybe someone here will have some additional information or maybe be able to look on an old Washington state highway map.

So this was on highway 202 between Redmond and Fall City, Wa.  The most likely locations would be at either end of the measurement on the map.  https://maps.app.goo.gl/1Typ1n8S7MrK8aNH6  I've been told that there may have been a small camping loop at this rest stop.  But I'm not banking to much stock into that, but it's possible.  It would have been closed in the 70's some time I think.  I know little else.  Maybe someone can help me out with this.

Thanks.

I immediately consulted my old maps when I read the above post months ago, but found nothing. Just now I saw the 1985 WSDOT inventory video on SR-202, and here is the rest stop, right where you guessed it would be.  I have it cued up to where the driver announces the sign for the rest stop.

I believe that was to be an IL welcome center, had I-64 followed the 50/150 route to Louisville from St. Louis via Lawrenceville/Vincennes

Whats a Limon, and does it go well with gin?

In NY I490 has former rest/parking areas in Churchville and Victor that are now used as truck inspection stations

The Lake Ontario State Parkway has this service area that was closed at least 40 years ago.

Bumping the thread......

I don't know if these on I-77 neat Fort Chiswell, VA were ever opened or not, but they're fully cleared and graded, yet sit growing up with weeds and trees.

I don't remember them. It's really not that far from the rest areas/welcome centers at both the WV and NC state lines plus Wytheville is close. And all-new rest area locations added after the '80s are quite rare on interstates.

I miss the old Texas rest areas that were EZ off, EZ P and EZ on. The new ones are worse to navigate than some small college campuses.

Can you give an example here?

Dunno if these have been posted before, but were these places on I-20 in SC once rest areas?

Noticed both on a recent trip to the Carolinas.

The I-20 location was never built out, but these days they need an exit built for that Calks Ferry Rd off to the right.

And the I-95 location was indeed a rest area.  There are similar closed rest areas along I-85 near Gaffney and the WB I-26 rest area near Summerville (EB is still open).

Sure wish I-77 had another rest area pair maybe a little closer to Columbia, like near Winnsboro.  There's a pretty long stretch without services (for east coast standards) from Exit 34 to Exit 48.

They were graded but nothing else was done and they never were completed. The southbound one is used as a staging area for the maintenance contractor to park work vehicles.

Something that's been bothering me for a while now: were these ramps on I-71 south of Grove City ever rest areas, or anything in particular? I ask because the entrance and exit ramps are quite steep and short for anywhere that would have to accommodate trucks.  They used these for staging construction equipment during the recent road work, but they were there long before that...

They were rest areas.  There are at least 2 former rest area sites along I-71 in Ohio.  IIRC, the other was near Mansfield.

There are two abandoned rest areas in Northern Colorado.  First one is I-25 Northbound at the Natural Fort on the East side of the interstate, about a mile north of the Carr Exit.  This rest area used to have what appears to be on-ramps and off ramps accessible by mainline I-25.  I have no idea when it was removed.

Then, there's the Poudre Rest Area, now abandoned and demolished, which was on both sides of I-25 north of the Poudre River.  State Patrol and a tank farm are now on the East side.

I already mentioned the Natural Fort rest stops 300 entries earlier in this thread.   Not sure if bicycles are still allowed on I-25 through there but they were in June 1988 when I cycled from FTC to Cheyenne and those were still around then.  Never more than basic waysides though, no buildings, no restrooms, a wide shoulder on the southbound lane and a larger circle turn on the northbound lane. That bike trip might be the only time I ever stopped there when it was still active, the only time I ever read the point of interest signs they had up back then.

Yes, Bicycles are still allowed on I-25, north of Fort Collins.  I believe there are bicycle signs throughout that section.  After looking at your post, that Wiggins rest area on Highway 34 is a great find.  It still looks active in a 1989 aerial image on the historic aerials website, but was not there in a 1956 aerial image.
