Well, going higher in latitude tends to get you lower temperatures, as you probably know. Proximity to the open ocean, too, can either diminish this effect, or accentuate it (as apparently in this case with New York and Boston). Generally, water heats and cools more gradually than air, so in the winter, seaside locations tend to be comparatively warm. But when temps rise, as you saw in Baltimore and Philly, the ocean stays cooler and so do the cities near it.

The same thing happens with the Great Lakes.
You get that east wind out of Boston, and warm air to the west, you can have an incredible temperature gradient. It could be 50 in Downtown Boston, 60 by the time you get out to 128, 70 by the time you get to 495, and 80 in Worcester. I can recall going to a game at Fenway in June, leaving my house in shorts, and needing a sweatshirt and jeans when I got out of the car.

You're in Needham, you've never watched the weather on TV and seen that spread before? Happens enough in the spring around here. Read up on things like 'back door cold fronts' (I promise this isn't a Google search gag with the name) and you can get an understanding of the mess that can be our spring weather.

That's not crazy, it's normal for the Eastern seaboard to have these differences. Boundaries draped and fortified by the cool sea breeze is very common, especially this time of year.
Around here, we call that the "lake effect". Not uncommon for forecasts to include the text "cooler by the lake". In winter, it can cause heavier snowfalls -- usually impacting lower Michigan more frequently than the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan. UPer's and Buffalo, NY residents know this phenomenon quite well.

I lived 3 miles from Lake Ontario...there were several times in April/May where it was 80 at my house and 50 lakeside 3 miles away.
