Las Vegas day trip
« on: October 11, 2017, 11:58:15 PM »

I plan on making the trip from Flagstaff, AZ to Vegas and back in the next couple weeks or so. I basically plan on driving the strip, walking some of it, and clinching the interstates of the Las Vegas metro area, as well as checking out the first official stretch of I-11.
I really am not interested in doing anything casino-ey, I'm just going because I've never been before, which is as good a reason as any . Besides, I'm only 19 anyway.

My route:https://goo.gl/maps/83Hs8SzpxeF2
I will take I-515> I-215 > I-15, and will be making sort of a figure 8 around the freeway system and then heading south on US-95 through Searchlight to I-40. I'll take I-40 back to Flagstaff, and in doing so will clinch all of Arizona's segment of that route. Does anyone know of anything in particular around Vegas that might interest a roadgeek? I don't plan on stopping to see the Hoover Dam or going to the Bridge viewing area because A) it looks like you have to pay, and B) I'll be passing through there again on a much larger 6-7 day trip in 2018.

As I said, I'm going to be walking around some, so does anyone know of any good places for cheap/ free public parking? I feel like that may be asking a lot for around the strip.

Go to Oatman on the Arizona side of the river.  Can't beat an early alignment of US 66, especially since Sitgreaves Pass was repaved.  Even AZ 66 has some really cool stuff that's free like the Hackerry General Store.

There is already a very short southbound section of I-11 open to traffic. Currently, I-515 remains intact... for now.

Alright, I'm leaving tomorrow morning at 6:00 am at the latest. Google maps is showing approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes to drive  to Vegas, and I expect pretty light traffic on the way there, since it will be early on a Sunday morning. My concern is for when I'll be leaving town that afternoon/ evening. Sunday evenings usually have the worst traffic when it comes to departing Vegas to the south, and I know that I-15 gets clogged up pretty bad, but what about US-95 southbound between CA and NV? Does it get a lot of traffic from weekenders headed back to L.A.? I would hope not, since it seems pretty out of the way.

US 95 primarily is used by people trying to get to Laughlin, you won't have issues coming from Las Vegas.  Mind the drop to two-lanes on the California side.
