What's a perfect burger to you?
Mine:
Cheese (Pepperjack)
Bacon
Pickles
Mustard
Jalapenos
Grilled onions
Darn near anything except ketchup.

This is something that varies by mood. What I put on a burger one day isn't the same thing I put on it two months later. But...
1. Cheese. No point in having a burger without it.
2. Mayo and/or mustard.
3. Leaf lettuce, for some crunch.
4. Tomato, for some juiciness.
5. Onion. Raw, grilled, or both.
If you want to make me extra happy, put a fried egg on top.
If you want to make me super-duper happy, put a slice of ham on it too.
Pickle slices are fine, but I don't really care one way or the other.
Cheese and bacon, nothing else.
I'm very much not a condiments/toppings person. Don't dip my fries in anything. Prefer my sandwiches to have only bread, meat and cheese
Not inclusive...
Condiments: Either/or spicy mustard, mayo, thousand island & blue cheese dressing.
Toppings: Lettuce, Tomato, Grilled Onions, avocado, coleslaw
Cheeses: American, Cheddar, Blue Cheese...well, almost anything, and lots of it, but swiss.
Bacon on a burger doesn't do anything for me (sorry not sorry, you can't ban me from these forums without a fair trial).
I have learned that you can't put too many slippery toppings on your burger, or it won't stay together.
Anyone else do this? You're at a birthday party or a company grill-out, and you get to choose a hot dog or a hamburger. So you take both, cut the hot dog lengthwise, and put it on your burger.

-Cheese (typically colby jack, cheddar, or american, but really anything)
-Lettuce
-Tomato
-Ketchup AND mayo
-Bacon, but only occasionally when I'm feeling it
Depends on the quality of the burger. If it's high quality mom and pop restaurant/made in my kitchen, just meat and American cheese. If it's McDonald's, I'm usually adding extra onions if not extra ketchup too.
Life is too short for American "cheese".

I prefer any cheese with flavor that's actually natural cheese. If it's 51% cheese, apparently it can be called cheese.

i don't feel like so much of a fatty anymore.
there's a place near here that will, as the story goes, make you a stuffed cheeseburger, with two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns.
i mean.... right?
An entire onion slice is the only way to enjoy onions on a burger, change my mind. Cooked, grilled, caramelized, raw, what have you. There's hardly a way to screw onions up. Romaine lettuce (iceberg lettuce is an abomination and should be avoided at all costs), avocado, whole grain mustard, very thinly sliced tomatoes. Cheese and bacon sometimes, depends on my mood. Also a generous amount of chipotle mayonnaise with a hint of lime on the buns. Dill pickles, but thinly, smoothly sliced only. No thick or crinkle cut pickles.
Somebody else mentioned fries. The best way to enjoy them are seasoned ones that are seasoned and cooked well enough they don't need any condiments. Probably a hot take but IMO, if you need sauces with your fries (unless they're being specifically made to go with a condiment), you have bad fries. Just like how if you need steak sauce with your steak, you probably have a bad steak.

Iceberg lettuce adds good crunch to a salad when mixed with more delicate greens. But, on a burger, those more delicate greens give enough crunch.
Cheese, lettuce, onions, mushrooms, mustard, ketchup, mayo.
I do not like tomatoes.

I'm not crazy about tomatoes by themselves, but I think they add needed moisture to a hamburger.
Pretty much almost everything I've ever seen offered at burger restaurants.
Standard for me is lettuce, tomato, pickles, a little onion (raw or grilled). I don't like any condiments put on the burger for me because it's always applied too heavilly, but sometimes I'll dab on a drop of ketchup before each bite.
Extras if they're available and I'm in the mood: sautéed mushrooms, bacon, jalapeños. Mayo is not allowed in the vicinity.

I don't love raw tomatoes either. I'm not so picky that I take them off of a burger, but I wouldn't put them on myself. Condiments provide said moisture (or not overcooking the heck out of the burger) for me.
Chris
Cheese, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, relish, sometimes onion and tomato but not always.
I have two cheeseburger builds (can't have a burger without cheese) that I will switch between depending on my mood. One is just ketchup and mustard. The other is ketchup, mayo, and lettuce. Lettuce and mayo don't mix with mustard, in my opinion, since they're both somewhat sweet and they don't go with the spice of mustard.
I like pickles on burgers, but most places put way too many pickles on their burgers, to the point that they're overlapping, which means it's hard to actually get an entire pickle in one bite, or to cleanly bite through the pickle, meaning it gets pulled out of the burger and hangs out of your mouth awkwardly. I'd like no more than two or three pickle slices on a burger, but that's awkward to communicate to most burger places, so I will sometimes just go without.
I also like onions on burgers, but most burger places, again, put way too much onion on, to the point that you can taste nothing but onion. (The meat should be the star of the show on a good burger, don't overpower it with the toppings!) Basically the only time I allow onion is at McDonalds (since they don't do this) or if I am making the burger myself and thus can control the amount of onion I put on the burger.
My ideal would have these toppings.
- Lettuce (plenty)
- Cheese
- Onions (preferably fried)
- Pickles
- Ketchup
- Mayo
- BBQ Sauce (if no ketchup or mayo)
- Jalapeños (if I'm in the mood for them)
I do not like tomatoes or bacon on a burger; tomatoes because their flavor overpowers the rest of the burger, and bacon because you can hardly taste it on one.
But what I truly despise on a burger is mustard, especially a lot of mustard. Blech.

cheese, gruyere is fantastic but cheddar will do. If all you've got is American ersatz cheese, leave it off.
lettuce
tomato if it's ripe and in season, otherwise don't bother
pickles
onion
bacon, if I feel like disregarding dr.'s advice
olives, sometimes
ketchup

My ideal burger:
Medium-rare beef patty, grilled onions, bacon (occasionally), lettuce, tomato, lots of ketchup, a dash or two of BBQ sauce, and a sprinkle of salt.

I generally agree with this, and I vote for Gouda for the cheese. I do season the burger meat before grilling, though. Also, depending on the sandwich I might want mustard if I'm having corned beef or pastrami. To be clear, I do not use mustard on a burger.
If I'm at Five Guys, however, I will ask for grilled onions and mushrooms on my burger.

Bacon is a very strange fit for that list. The other three are pretty standard "dislikes".
First, make it a turkey burger because I don't eat red meat. Black bean burgers are also good. As for what to put on it: cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, mayo, mustard, and ketchup or barbecue sauce.
Bacon and cheese. Sometimes lettuce, but not often.
Definitely salt, lots of salt.
As far as condiments go, mustard alone, ketchup and mustard, BBQ sauce, or A1 steak sauce.
Definitely out: tomato, pickles, mayonnaise (mayo is the devil's semen), and sliced onion. I can handle small quantities of diced onions (like on a McDonald's regular cheeseburger) or sauteed onions (White Castle) but not in large amounts, because I'm allergic (they give me a headache) and they cause gastrointestinal distress.
Sheetz has a burger with mozzarella sticks and marinara sauce. I'd eat that, but never get it because I'm usually getting the food to go and eating while I'm driving. I generally get burgers without liquid toppings when I'm driving because I don't want to make a mess and drip mustard or sauce all over myself.
Cheese, Pickles, Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo.
Cheese and ketchup. Yes, that's all I like on my burgers. I am one of the pickiest eaters on the planet.

Grilled onions or caramelized, and mushrooms, is a pretty safe combo. If I do that I like to spice it up by melting a little blue cheese. Apparently you shouldn't melt blue cheese, according to cheese snobs, but who's gonna stop me? The blue cheese police? The thin blue cheese line? The boys making the blue? The moldy cheese fuzz?
I've seen various references here, and over the years in other places, to American cheese not really being cheese. Why isn't it? And I'm not talking about "pasteurized cheese food product," as some items are labeled. I'm taking about American cheese.

Probably because American cheese usually refers to "pasteurized cheese food product". If you mean cheese made in America, well, that would be called whatever type of cheese it is (cheddar, gouda, etc.) regardless of whether it's made here or elsewhere.
It may vary a little to shake things up, but normally:
Cheese (Swiss or Provolone preferred, Cheddar is OK), bacon, mushrooms, grilled onions, mayonnaise. Cheese is to be melted, not just placed on top. BBQ sauce (but not ketchup) may be subbed for the mayo to shake things up.
Patty itself: Beef (NO veggie burgers), medium rare.
Outside of the aforementioned mushrooms and onions, no veggies. It's a burger, not a damn salad.
(Speaking of salads, Unpopular Opinion: Salad is not food. Salad is what food eats.)
The burger served at the Fuddrucker's restaurant chain is very close to my ideal burger.

I guess it depends on how technical one wants to get, and where one wants to draw the line? I don't really care, personally, and I'll gladly eat American cheese on a sandwich, burger, or even in a quick burrito that I make for myself because I'm a lazy and terrible cook. The one downside, though, is American cheese sometimes has gluten in it, so anyone with Celiac or gluten sensitivity/intolerance would probably want to avoid it.

Two reasons. One is that most processed faux cheese products are colored and flavored like American cheese. Secondly, because American cheese is relatively bland.
I don't mind it on a burger if cheddar isn't available, but I'd never want to eat cubes of it by itself like on those European style meat and cheese plates.

The other great thing about Fuddrucker's (IMHO) is how they do toppings:
Typically the burger comes out with the top bun on the side, and only things such as cheese, bacon, or a fried egg already on. For all other toppings & condiments, you walk up to their toppings bar and can put on whatever toppings (and more importantly, in your preferred amount for each) that you desire.
Sadly, Fuddrucker's locations seem to be dropping left & right. The last 2 in MD that I'd been to (Silver Spring & Parole) are gone, and another one just off I-95 exit 4 in DE also seems to have bit the dust. I think the closest one to anywhere in MD is somewhere in PA now

Yes, unfortunately the Fuddrucker's around here seem to be going by the wayside. There were ones in both Columbia and Annapolis which have closed. Many years ago there was one at Harborplace. I have been to the York PA location and know of the Ashland VA location.
There are also "nearby" ones in Chambersburg PA and Lancaster PA which I've been to. A footnote - I was at the Chambersburg one last summer. Because of COVID, they temporarily shut down the toppings bar, but would gladly get you what you wanted at the counter.
Cheese and Ketchup. In fact, when I become dictator, I shall decree that will be the default cheeseburger, and if you want lettuce, tomato, or onions, you'll have to specifically ask for it.
Lettuce, tomato, basically any cheese besides "American" (what's called American is a disgrace to America IMO) - though Gouda or Swiss are my favorites for burgers, caramelized onions, and steak or a less sweet BBQ sauce, with a touch of ketchup. Medium-rare beef patty, though I do enjoy a buffalo burger once in a while. The best burger I ever had actually had a buffalo patty, come to think of it.
Similarly, Roy Rogers has long had the "Fixin's Bar," but during the pandemic that hasn't been available and instead they offer you a small cup containing some condiments like lettuce, tomato, etc. I don't use that stuff on a burger and so decline the cup, but I think I'd decline it anyway because the times I've seen what in the cup I thought the lettuce, in particular, looked rather wilted and not too good.

Fuddruckers used to be my go-to burger place. I have celiac disease now, but before that whole thing started they probably had the best toasted burger bun. They also had this really good pico de gallo-style salsa that might be the strangest thing I've ever put on a burger, but it was so good.

In exact orderl
Ketchup.
Cheese.
Mayonnaise.
Occasionally, I'll have bacon, but it must be crispy, and always on top of the cheese.

Depends. Some places also add pickle brine and some spices.
Nobody's mentioned Carolina style yet? Chili, slaw, mustard and onions. Same thing goes on a hot dog. You've already heard me tell this story, but it bears repeating: I step up to Missy's Grill in Efland, North Carolina for the very first time. A lady in front of me orders a "burger with everything". The attendant asks "Are you sure?" When she gets her order, something didn't seem right and she opens the bun in front of me, exclaims "I can't eat this!" and leaves without asking for a replacement.
These days, it's more common to ask for "All the Way" when ordering Carolina-style burgers and dogs pretty much everywhere here in Central Carolina.
There's some local NRHP-listed general store which sells it's own barbecue sauce.

My sister was into cheese burgers when we were in high school. I took her to Burger King once before she got her license and she asked for a cheese burger. She got kind of snippy with the clerk when he questioned if she wanted any toppings which I think led to what happened next. We got home and discovered all she had was a bun with cheese inside of it. I refused to take her back to complain because it was hilarious.

Ham on a burger? Interesting, bacon is more common.
Usually:
Mayonnaise, but sometimes I'll switch it up for 1000 Island or Tartar Sauce (one local chain here serves their burgers with Tartar Sauce)
Onion - usually raw, but sometimes grilled
Tomato - if not available, a little catsup. Tomatoes and catsup are an either/or thing for me. I never put both on the same burger.
Dill Pickles
Lettuce
Cheese - Cheddar, Gouda, or Swiss, but I'll eat any cheese that's offered (even the "dreaded American")
When I make burgers at home, this is how I fix them.
Sometimes (depending on my mood, and also how much extra they are charging):
Mushroom - only if they're grilled/sauteed
Bacon
Fried Onions/Onion Straws
Rarely/Never:
Mustard
Jalapenos
BBQ Sauce
Fried Egg

(some of these are things I really like, just not on a burger)
When I make them at home, I add the following to the ground beef before grilling: Montreal Steak Seasoning, finely diced onion, shredded cheddar, and a little mayonnaise (instead of egg as some do)

I immediately thought of this (https://tomwahls.xdineapp.com/#viewMenu/1897/TW%20-%20Enterprise/8085/Tom%20Wahl's%20Menu), but that works as well.

Brew Brothers in Reno used to have a burger with two grilled cheese sandwiches serving as the buns and the burger patty in between. A few old Yelp photos here (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/brew-brothers-reno-4?caption=grilled%20cheese). I tried it once; a bit more of a fat bomb than I ever really need.
I'm mustard, lettuce, pickle. Cheese is OK but I can do without it. I'd rather spend that fat on ground beef with a higher fat content, which retains some of the moisture. The 7% fat content ground beef is healthier but it cooks up too dry, and the 4% fat ground beef (Trader Joe's has it) makes a godawful burger but works well for things requiring crumbled ground beef like tacos and omelette fillings.

There used to be a food truck in Redmond that did the same thing. They called it the "Cheezus".
Generally speaking, I usually like my burgers either smashed or grilled (medium well). As for the toppings:
Cheese (cheddar, pepper jack or swiss, I hate American cheese but will get it if the only option)
Lettuce, as long as it's iceberg
Mustard, sometimes with a little Mayo (I might give up Mayo altogether after reading what hbelkins called it upthread lmao)
Onions, preferably grilled
sometimes Bacon
sometimes Tomatoes
NO ketchup, pickles, mushrooms or jalapeno ever
For those who said a whole slice of onions, Cookout is definitely your friend. I usually have to remove all but the two outer rings when I eat their burgers.
I visited a Sheetz yesterday for the first time in more than three years, and got a burger. I got BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, bacon, and fries on my burger.

But a lot of restaurants in Texas are still not open for dine-in. I specifically remember Texas shut down restaurant seating in the middle of March 2020, because we were on our way back from Mexico and had to do drive through our whole time in Texas.
Is there really that much difference between Washington and Texas when it comes to restaurants during this phase of COVID?

Re: Texas restaurant dine-in status
Most restaurants right now are open for dine-in. A lot opened in the past couple months now that cases are low. I believe most restaurants were not closed by government order, but rather by company policy or the manager's decision. Independent table service joints have probably been open for dine-in for almost a year now.
