Most likely so they can widen it to two lanes if it's ever warranted in the future.

My understanding is that why do they use an extra platform that looks like an airport blablabla for a braided ramp? US-52 in Rural Hill has it too.
It's not the size of the bridge that counts, it's how you use it.
Nothing is planned here after this highway was rebuilt 20 years ago.
