One of the worst traffic bottlenecks in Johnson County – and in the state of Kansas for that matter – will get some relief thanks to about $14.5 million in federal funds and $1.65 million in funds from Johnson County.

Interstate 35 under the 75th Street bridge in Johnson County will be widened by one lane in each direction, with construction starting in spring of 2020, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer announced Tuesday.

November Bid list updated with the approved bids. Only one project from November did not have an approved bid announced, a brick street rehabilitation project in Manhattan. Presumably, the approved bid has to go to the Manhattan City Council for concurrence before the contract can actually be award.

For some reason, K-171 was noted on the release as K-171(02). This is the first time I've seen such a distinction. Ironically, it should no longer be necessary, as Rice County agreed to take back the 'other' K-171 in exchange for ARRA funds to repave the street in Bushton.

Outgoing Congressman Kevin Yoder, R-Kan., also announced the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City Kan. got a $13.8 million grant to replace the interchange at Interstate 70 and the Turner Diagonal.

Yoder said in a release the new interchange would open the door for more economic development.

"This is a massive win for KCK, and will continue to build on the already amazing economic development we have seen over the last decade,"  Yoder said.
