Title: Map of the Free Zones in Mexico (reference for driving to Mexico)
Post by: US 41 on September 24, 2015, 10:11:27 AM
http://www.scribblemaps.com/create/#id=lRepMorkwW

I finally finished mapping out the free zones (garitas and aduanas) in Mexico. Red paddles mean that a TIP and FMM is required to travel past that point and green paddles mean that only an FMM is required to travel past that point. Any questions let me know. Everything north of the red and green paddles means that only Mexican auto insurance is required. A TIP costs about $50, an 180 day FMM costs $20, and a 7 day FMM is free. There are also Sonora Only Permits if you travel south of MX 2 and east of MX 15. Those cost around $30. Sonora Only Permits are only valid in Sonora. Do not drive to Chihuahua or Sinaloa without an "all-Mexico" TIP. You also have to pay a $200 - $400 deposit which will be given back when you cancel the permit. Make sure to turn in both your FMM and TIP before you leave Mexico.

Based on the mapping Mexican Highway 2 (both east and west segments) is entirely within the hassle free zone. A FMM however is required to travel on the route between Cananea and Sonoyta.

All of the Baja Peninsula and everything west of MX 15 (down to Guaymas) are part of the free zone, which means you will not need a TIP. You will need a FMM if you travel south of the green paddles on the map.

This thread was formerly called "Mapping out Banjercito locations in Mexico" until I changed it today. A link for those locations can be found here. http://www.sanbornsinsurance.com/banjercito.php

Banjercitos not listed on the Sanborns website.

New Mexico / Chihuahua: There is a Banjercito at the Puerto Palomas / Columbus, NM POE that is open 8am to 12am (midnight) all week. On GSV there also appears to be an INM office on MX 2 on the west side of Janos and a Banjercito at the Garita south of Janos on MX 10 for those that use the Antelope Wells POE. I have no idea what the hours are for the INM and Banjercito in (near) Janos. I imagine the Banjercito on MX 10 is probably open 24 hours per day.

Arizona / Sonora: There is a Banjercito in Cananea that is open Mon-Fri 8am-6pm and open 8am-1pm on weekends. You get the FMM in Naco.

---------------------------------------------------
To get a FMM you need just your passport.

To get a TIP you need your vehicle registration, passport, drivers license, and FMM; plus 2 copies of each.

Note: There are free 7 day FMM's at certain locations. Not all INMs have them. If they don't you will have to get the 180 day $20 FMM. Allende (Piedras Negras / Acuna) and Naco do not have them. Colombia (Laredo) and Ojinaga apparently do have them. If anyone has any more info on other crossings let us know!  :sombrero: If you get the 7 day FMM your TIP will probably only be valid for 7 days as well since they typically match them.

----------------------------------------------------
Credits to those on the forum that have given me some very useful information on entering Mexico.

Kphoger told me that Colombia has the free 7 day FMM. He also told me Allende does not. He said that an official told him that the free FMM was available at Eagle Pass Int'l 2 Bridge.

JN Winkler told me that a title is not required to get a TIP and that all you need is your vehicle registration. The name on the registration just has to match the name on your passport (and credit card if you don't use cash).

I heard there are new rules when driving into Mexico requiring that all visitors need an FMM.  Is that correct?   (For 7 days or less it's free and for up to 180 days it's about 500 pesos.)

Do mean past the border zone or within the border zone?

You cannot drive past the border zone without a TIP, and you cannot obtain a TIP without an FMM.

I've been working on this mostly for my future use, but I decided to post this on here too for anyone that may end up going to Mexico in the future. I divided up the border crossing into Preferred (little to no wait), Medium Wait (15-45 minutes), and Long Wait (1+ hours). The preferred and medium wait crossings have border crossing hours, Mexican insurance info, Banjercito hours and info, and toll prices. If you want to use a long wait crossing you can look up insurance yourself. I only posted them if for some reason there is no other way to go or if it is late at night and you want to cross back into the US at 3 in the morning. Hopefully this comes in handy for someone besides me in the future.
