So, this probably seems a little odd, but I just thought of a way to outline a city's metro area. So, just draw a line from the center of the city to the farthermost suburb. Draw a line in each general direction (NW, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, with occasional exceptions). Then connect all the ends of the lines together, then you have an outline of the metro area. Now for some examples of mine:

Atlanta, GA: http://prntscr.com/501qa9

Nashville, TN: http://prntscr.com/501rh1

Augusta, GA: http://prntscr.com/501t1m

Knoxville, TN: http://prntscr.com/501u0n

Well, you know, suburbs are suburbs. I may count the beginning of a suburb or the end of one (city limits that is), but it just depends. As said, a suburb is a suburb.

And how do you determine the center?

Well, the heart of a city; the heart of downtown. Pretty self-explanatory.

Suburbs are suburbs. That's a great definition you got there. A suburb is a town/city where more people commute out of than into.

Not quite. I would say the center should be the geographic center, since the "heart of downtown" can lead to ambiguous results.

You'd think that, but then https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=12519.0...
