Thanks to some Scranton-area traffic last fall, I nicely composed PA 438 on I-81:

Jim

Hate to do this, but it's my only 438, so I will.  Here's that same Pennsylvania 438 on I-81.  Mine's older, taken July 13, 2008.  Is it just the lighting and angle or is the newer sign using a narrower font?

I think it's the lighting and the angle. I was using a cloudy-day white balance which enhances the reds (fall colors) but makes greens more yellow.

To me it looks like that particular implementation of Clearview looks narrower than I'm used to–on the other hand, it might also just be the power of suggestion. IDK.

On I-81 in NEPA a few days ago I thought many of the signs were either using a narrower Clearview than I'm used to or something not Clearview at all.

On second thought, the numerals on the shield are definitely thicker in my photo than yours. So the text is either a few whiskers thinner on mine, or it's an optical illusion. There's a little fine cracking on the exit tab, but otherwise it looks quite new...so I'm not certain that it's the same sign.

I'm not as familiar with the highway/signage history in the area, but since Pennsylvania was one of the first to experiment with Clearview, they're probably likely to be two different signs due to replacement.

Disgraceful that a US route terminus is signed with such ugly shields like that. :banghead:
