Been searching MD Archives because I just discovered it had this sort of stuff available...

Anyway, a few discoveries that may be of interest...

There was definitely a MD 9 - it is now MD 956.  When that bridge was constructed in the late 1960s, the road from the West Virginia side was a discontinuous piece of WV 9 and MD 9 was assigned to the 0.53 miles from the bridge to US 220.  Check out this numerically ordered route list from 1970 - http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagser/s1800/s1884/000000/000045/pdf/msa_s1884_000045.pdf#search=state+road+commission
The 1970 MD Official shows a route 9 marker on the WV side of the river.  The 1968 version of this list has MD 9's mileage and specifically listed 956 as not assigned - http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagser/s1800/s1884/000000/000044/pdf/msa_s1884_000044.pdf#search=state+road+commission.

I-695 from I-95 to the RR overpass southeast of US 40 was MD 781 for a while, as was the beltway from MD 2 to MD 3 Bus - http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagser/s1800/s1884/000000/000031/pdf/msa_s1884_000031.pdf#search=state+road+commission.
Shows up in lists throughout 1960s.

The MD 675 segment at Delmar was once US 13 ALT

This document documents a lot of the openings of controlled access highways in Maryland and is interesting:  http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagser/s1800/s1883/000000/000031/pdf/msa_s1883_000031.pdf#search=state+road+commission

Does anyone know what US 522 south of US 40 was designated prior to US 522 being extended south?  The 1930s minutes from Washington County mention the closing of Bridge St in lieu of the new bridge and mentions that this involves a state highway but never mentions a number.  MDRoads.com has no listing for older versions of MD 43 or MD 46...

I'm guessing you know about the MD-140 from the PA line to Reisterstown was supposed to be MD-9 thing from MDRoads. That site's owner, Mike Pruett, also posted a MD-43 shield (in the White Marsh area) with a faded "9" under the "43". Again, I'm assuming you've been there on MDRoads. I guess what I'm trying to say is you know something that Mike Pruett doesn't.

I do not have any maps that explicity show what it was on the Maryland side of the river, but I do have maps showing the West Virginia side.

1932 MD and 1934 WV state official maps show it as WV 9.  WV state official maps from September 1937 thru November 1940 show it as WV 38.  The July/August 1941 WV map, however, shows US 522 extending through West Virginia and into Virginia.

This is amazing stuff! I've wanted to do a deep dive into the MD archives for a while to look up some things and this sort of info is the reason why  :bigass:

I am very interested to know more about the original MD 781 and if it was ever signed in the field along any segment of the Beltway. I have several old maps of the Baltimore metro region but I've never seen that number on them.

Mapmikey

Here are maps that show it.  These come from a 1961 book that shows programming for the state systems from 1961-75 (e.g. recommends which routes to transfer to counties)...

Entire book can be found here - http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagser/s1800/s1883/000000/000005/pdf/msa_s1883_000005.pdf#search=1961+highway+programming

I saw a version of this book in an antique store 15+ years ago and regretted not buying it - it had clear pages to overlay the various maps for each county...happy to see it online...

The highway reference guides show MD 9 in Alleghany County through 1977, and MD 956 there in 1979 (haven't found a 1978 version of this document).  So there is a small possibility that the MD 9 shield reused on MD 43 came from Alleghany County.  OTOH, that shield was located at what was the original west end of MD 43 which was in place prior to 1972.

This is no knock on Mike Pruett or his extensive site.  Maryland has commissioned and decommissioned so many obscure routes since the late 1930s including duplicating numbers over and over.  There are thousands upon thousands of pages to sift through to find a route that might only be listed ONCE.  Or it appears on only one version of a county map.  Or it only appears as an annotated copy of a SHA's version of that one map (so there is literally only 1 document in the universe that shows it).  I have the same issue with Virginia Highways Page.  So yes, MDRoads.com does have a relatively small number of route numbers that are not listed.

We're not gods. We're website owners. We're always open to, and excited about, new information. This just means that 140 would have been a second incarnation, and was under consideration right around when the first one disappeared.

Here is the memo moving MD 9 from Alleghany Co to replace parts of US 140.  I could not find the memo where they changed their mind...

Here's a pretty good find.  It's titled State Roads Commission of Maryland Routes and their Common Names.  It's effectively a 1963 route log that shows the "streetname" for each route segment.  It also shows a few news pieces from the opening of the I-70/MD 85 interchange in Frederick 6 years ago, and several route numbering memos from the ca. 1997-2001 era which includes what to number the then-new Great Seneca Highway in MoCo (options besides MD 119 were MD 215 and MD 199).

Other items of note from the route log portion:  existence of an ALT US 29 in Ellicott City, and I-95 on the Harbor Thruway.

They have the SHR (or equivalent) from nearly every year onward from 1956, plus 1952.  Sometimes it is segregated by county and sometimes there is a numerical list statewide...

These pdfs are searchable and so because it was easy to do so, I checked on numbers identified at MDRoads.com as never assigned.

I found 26 of them (list at end of this post).  I also found about 100 different county maps 1949-1978 at the MD Archives site, and one set of maps at the National Archives (search Maryland 1950 census) that has labeled county maps 1937-1949 (most are older than 1945).  The 1940 Census county maps are all 1937 but are unlabeled save for 2.

All of this proves Maryland has back to the 1930s been assigning numbers to old routings and then decommissioning them.  The county maps from 1930s-1950s very often label the tiny and often unsigned rutes.  An example would be MD 518 First St in Queen Annes or MD 485-486-487 in Vienna (yes there was an earlier MD 485). Unfortunately the Washington County map in the 1950 census set comes after US 522, but it looks apparent that if somebody can find the 1937 version it would label the route number pre-522.

It will be a prolonged project to find all assigned numbers and segments (there was a 25-segment version of MD 950 once different from the current 950).

Here is the list of unassigned numbers and which ones I found.  This leaves only 1 number not found under 900...

Small possibility in my view.  I would think this mystery designation would predate the expansion of numbering that followed the original 3-digit expansion in the late 30s.

There is no documentation of earlier versions of MD 43, MD 46, and MD 44 did not show up on a state official until after 1940, though it might have been assigned (MD 45's original route also never made a state official though is on the 1949 Alleghany Co map)...

The original 53x assignments were all over the state.  My guess is that it was a small route in a county I do not have an older county map for yet...
