I know we road enthusiasts tend to have lots of discussions about our preferred idea for control cities on interstates and major freeways. Ones that make sense or do not make sense or are outdated.

We've shared AASHTO's redesign of the list of their chosen cities in a thread last year. And in our normal course of action we all found some inconsistencies and cities left out.

Let's make an exhaustive list since we ourselves know what's actually posted on the roads compared to the official list. Every area/state can share the unique and the odd. Ex: Illinois posting next town/regional cities/major cities at different junctions, Ohio turnpike signing NYC then I-80 signing small city junctions throughout PA.

Here's my stomping ground: Louisiana

The AASHTO list lines up with what Louisiana signs:
I-10: Beaumont, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Slidell, Bay St Louis
*I-10 WB from Mississippi skips Slidell and shows New Orleans
I-12: Baton Rouge, Hammond, Slidell
*WB I-10 at the I-12 West exit lists Hammond and Baton Rouge together. Mileage signs show Hammond on the bottom line though.
I-20: Dallas, Shreveport, Monroe, Vicksburg
I-49: Texarkana, Shreveport, Alexandria, Opelousas, Lafayette
I-55: New Orleans, Hammond, Jackson
*Louisiana shows Hammond southbound on mileage signs and on-ramp signs where Mississippi shows New Orleans
I-59: New Orleans, Hattiesburg

I-110: SB Baton Rouge, NB Natchez (I-110 NB exit from I-10 also lists Metro Airport)
I-210: WB Beaumont, EBLafayette
I-220: WB Dallas, EB Monroe (exits from I-20 say I-220 Bypass and list Texarkana)
I-310: SB Houma Boutte, NB New Orleans
I-510: SB Chalmette NB Slidell (I-510 SB exit from 10 also lists NASA)
I-610: WB Baton Rouge, EB Slidell

It will be interesting to see what I-49 south of Lafayette will list. Current US 90 east exit on I-10 lists Morgan City. New Iberia is larger but is very close to Lafayette. Houma is also larger but sits mostly off the US 90 expressway.

jp, is that what is signed, or what you think should be signed?

What I think should be.  NYSDOT doesn't use Philly, Toronto, or Cleveland as control cities, plus I've eliminated control "regions" (Eastern LI, Canada, Cape Cod, RI Beaches)
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

Why not Manchester on I-93?

I-93 doesn't go directly through Manchester; a lot of Boston traffic uses US 3 to Manchester, and those who use I-93 have to jog west and north on I-293 to get there.
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

What I think should be.  NYSDOT doesn't use Philly, Toronto, or Cleveland as control cities, plus I've eliminated control "regions" (Eastern LI, Canada, Cape Cod, RI Beaches)
Wouldn't "South Rochester" be a regional control city, since there's no municipality or hamlet with that name?  I'm also not sure why you'd use Albany for I-490 when Syracuse would seem to be much more appropriate if looking for something beyond Victor.

I'm pretty sure this thread is about what's actually in the field.  If not, it should be moved to fictional.
Please note: All comments here represent my own personal opinion and do not reflect the official position of NYSDOT or its affiliates.

Here is the prior thread. The link there doesn't appear to lead to the list of control cities: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18616.0

I was trying to find the current list, as that would help with this sort of discussion, and I think this is the one: https://cote.transportation.org/interstate-control-cities/  I note it contains the same typo I mentioned in the prior thread as to I-26–Asheville is misspelled as "Ashville."

I won't try to provide a comprehensive analysis for my state (Virginia), but I note the I-66 listing omits two cities frequently named on I-66 signage.

I-66: Strasburg, Front Royal, Manassas, Washington (italics denote those missing from the list). Virginia has used Front Royal on I-66 signs for years, going back to the 1960s (this based on photographs I've seen, as I was not alive then), and Manassas is a more recent addition to some westbound signs, I'd estimate probably since sometime in the 1990s. Front Royal is considerably more common on westbound signs. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure any pull-thru signs list Manassas, but it shows up as a control city on some interchange signage (notably on the Beltway).

Indiana:
I-80 EB: South Bend/Detroit west of Toll Road/I-94 interchange, South Bend between Toll Road/I-94 interchange and IN 933, Toledo east of IN 933

South Bend never appears on any signs for a control city, just the mileage signs.  80's eastbound control is "Detroit" west of Exit 16, and "Ohio" east of there.

Again, South Bend never is on the control signage.  It's all "Chicago".

Nope.  It's all "Chicago" and "Ohio" on the Toll Road.

I-579: Liberty Bridge, Veterans Bridge

I-180: Milton, Williamsport

I-380: Scranton, Mt Pocono, Stroudsburg/Hazleton****

I-283: Harrisburg, Airport/Lancaster

* Overhead signage at Breezewood and post-interchange mileage signs list Washington D.C. and Baltimore, but signage at all subsequent interchanges lists Hancock as the destination for I-70 East.

**The use of Williamsport as a control city on I-80 is its own interesting sidebar:

Williamsport first appears as the I-80 EB destination on ground-mounted destination signs at PA 26. The subsequent EB mileage sign lists Williamsport on its bottom line with route mileage calculated via US 220. This setup is repeated at Lamar (PA 64), although the mileage sign lists Williamsport having gotten a mile closer to the next-closest destination (Lock Haven–which is also not on I-80).

At US 220's on-ramps to I-80 (Exit 178), Williamsport is used as the I-80 EB destination sign facing US 220 SB traffic–which is somewhat counterintuitive since, if you're facing that sign, you likely came from Williamsport and are headed in the wrong direction. (A U-turn would be the quickest route to Williamsport from here.) There's also a destination sign facing the opposite approach to the Exit 178 diamond, which is not US 220 but instead a local dead-end serving only a relative few homes. I'd be interested to know what destination it signs for I-80 EB–since the most logical route to Williamsport is via US 220 North, not I-80.

The mileage sign following that interchange lists mileage for Williamsport calculated via US 15, and Milton occupies the bottom slot despite Williamsport being farther.

Again at Exits 185 and 192, I-80 EB signage on the intersecting SR lists Williamsport as the destination, and the EB mileage signs on I-80 list more-distant Williamsport on top, then closer Milton beneath.

The lonely Mile Run interchange (Exit 199) lacks a destination on the sign posted at the I-80 East ramp, although it appears there may be a destination posted on the 80/80 shield assembly facing the PennDOT stockpiles just north of the interchange. I'd be interested to know what that reads.

Williamsport isn't used as a WB control except in two places: I-80 signage at PA 254 (Exit 215) uses it as the WB destination. And for many years at PA 42 in Buckhorn (Exit 232), old non-reflective button copy destination signs for I-80 WB listed Milton with the ghost of Williamsport visible underneath. These signs were recently replaced; Milton is listed on all of the new signs except for one Williamsport sign at the PA 42 NB-to-I-80 WB ramp gore. But at PA 54 in Danville (Exit 224) all signage for I-80 West lists Milton as the destination. WB mileage signs at Buckhorn and Danville list both Milton and Williamsport (Exit 214 is close enough to Exit 212 that it lacks a post-interchange mileage sign westbound)

*** Tyrone and Port Matilda sometimes appear as the I-99 NB destination (perhaps a remnant of when the freeway ended at those points). These destinations are sometimes supplemented by State College, which also appears on some mileage signs. All SB signage that I've seen in the State College area lists Altoona only.

**** Stroudsburg/Hazleton appears as I-380's SB destination at all Exits 3, 8, and 13

In Mass I-95 is mostly Boston, Waltham, Peabody, and Portsmouth going north. South is Providence after Waltham. Of course, there is the NH-Maine and south shore from the mass pike. I think Dedham is also used but I am not sure.

Flint1979

This is what's used in Michigan:

I-69 NB/EB: Lansing, Flint, Port Huron
I-69 SB/WB: Flint, Lansing, Fort Wayne

I-75 NB: Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Mackinac Bridge, Sault Ste. Marie
I-75 SB: Mackinac Bridge, Saginaw, Flint, Detroit, Toledo

I-94 EB: Detroit, Port Huron for the main signage. Several other cities are used in between Detroit and Chicago at secondary interchanges.
I-94 WB: Detroit, Chicago again for the main signage. Same thing with the other cities being used in between Detroit and Chicago. It makes more sense to have Chicago listed for long distance travel.

I-96 EB: Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit
I-96 WB: Lansing, Grand Rapids, Muskegon

I-194: DOWNTOWN Battle Creek
I-196: Grand Rapids, Holland, Benton Harbor
I-275: Flint, Toledo
I-375: Civic Center, Flint
I-475: DOWNTOWN Flint, Saginaw, Detroit
I-496: DOWNTOWN Lansing, Jackson, Detroit
I-675: DOWNTOWN Saginaw
I-696: Lansing, Port Huron

Now this is the I'd have it, the three digits can stay the same to eliminate a little time here since they all seem to be fine control city wise except I-275 which I would switch Flint with Farmington Hills or Livonia but Flint makes sense somewhat due to the fact that I-275 was suppose to reconnect with I-75 near Davisburg but due to a lot of lakes and development north of I-696 it will never happen. I-69 and I-75 I will keep the way it is now. Mainly I-94 is the only one I'd change.

I-69 NB/EB: Lansing, Flint, Port Huron
I-69 SB/WB: Flint, Lansing, Fort Wayne

I-75 NB: Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Mackinac Bridge, Sault Ste. Marie
I-75 SB: Mackinac Bridge, Saginaw, Flint, Detroit, Toledo

I-94 EB: Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Port Huron
I-94 WB: Detroit, Ann Arbor, Jackson, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Chicago

I-96 EB: Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit
I-96 WB: Lansing, Grand Rapids, Muskegon

In Mass I-95 is mostly Boston, Waltham, Peabody, and Portsmouth going north. South is Providence after Waltham. Of course, there is the NH-Maine and south shore from the mass pike. I think Dedham is also used but I am not sure.
Add Canton, Salisbury (northbound only) & Attleboro (southbound only) to that list.  Dedham is still used for I-95 northbound (mainly in Canton) but it was used for I-95 southbound (between Trapelo Rd. & MA 135) until recently.

Burlington was also used a while back as well for I-95 southbound.  There's one or two older ramp signs (D6/D8 Paddle LGS') in Wakefield that still list such.

In Salisbury, Hampton, NH, Portland, ME and Kittery, ME are listed control cities for I-95 northbound (mainly at the MA 110 interchange); with Kittery being a relatively recent listing.

In Attleboro, Foxboro is used for I-95 northbound (paired with Boston) at the ramps from MA 1A northbound & MA 123 westbound.
