I used to have a 2006 American Maps spiral bound atlas of North America. Eventually it started to fall apart through heavy use not to mention it was becoming out of date. I'm looking to get an up to date version but I can't find anything online and Googling 'American Maps' comes up with nothing. Is this company still going? The only alternative is the Rand McNally atlas. I've never seen one close up so I don't know how the mapping compares. The American Maps mapping was perfect with just about the right level of detail to see clearly.

Can anyone help?

American Map is part of Langenscheidt, which sold its maps group to Universal Map in 2010: http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/financial-reporting/article/45138-langenscheidt-closing-its-u-s-division.html

The last American Map atlas on Amazon seems to be 2011, but Kappa Map Group (Universal's parent) still publishes atlases: http://www.kappamapgroup.com/
Per Amazon they fucked up the large print (removed detail instead of enlarging), but the normal one might still be good. Does this look familiar?

That explains why I'm having trouble finding anything. As for the mapping, other than some of the colours being different it looks very similar although most American mapping I've seen is of a similar style.

The atlas IS still there as of 2012, you just have to find it under a different name. Out of sheer luck I was able to find an atlas at a map store in Seattle in late 2011 with the title "American Highway Road Atlas." I am not sure who exactly makes it, but the cartography is the same as the American Map atlas.

Here's a link for the 2012 atlas from Amazon, I think there is a 2013 atlas out there as well.

This looks like the MapQuest (formerly National Geographic) atlas.

Most definitely is. I'd recognize that look anywhere. I still have a 2006 one in my car. Haven't seen any in stores since then though.

One thing I liked about the American Map atlas was it showed relief. I found this handy for choosing more scenic routes. I've had a look at the North American atlases available here, Michelin and AA, and neither show relief. Does the Rand McNally atlas show relief? I don't know as I can't find it in stores over here.

The MapQuest/American Highway one discussed above does. However, I find that I can usually infer topography based on other aspects of the map, at least enough to know which roads are in hilly or flat terrain.
