Christmas Whirlwind Family Trip: Bristol, CT to Roxboro, NC
« on: December 24, 2017, 11:03:12 PM »

Friends and fellow roadgeeks, I would like some routing advice.  Visiting family in different places this Christmas break.  On the 27th (Wednesday), we will be driving from Bristol, Connecticut down to Roxboro, North Carolina, directly, without stopping at home in Maryland.  Google Maps suggested going through NYC and straight down 95 to 85 to 58, which... yuck.  I hate 95, especially the stretch in Virginia from Alexandria to Fredericksburg.

I’ve come up with a few other options, and I’m wondering which would be best:

Option A. 84 to 380 to 81 to 64 to 29 to 58.
Option B. 84 to 380 to 81 to 15 to 29 to 58.
Option C. 84 to 684 to Saw Mill to Tappan Zee to 287 to 78 to 81 then continue with options A or B above.
Option D. CT-8 to Merritt Parkway to 287 then continue with Option C above.
Option E. CT-8 to Merritt Parkway to Hutch to 95 to NJ Turnpike to 195 to 295, back to 95, then DE-896 to US-301 back to 95 to 85 to 58.
Option F. CT-8 to Merritt Parkway to Hutch to 95 to NJ Turnpike to 195 to 295 to 13 to Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel (does the CBBT take EZ Pass?) to 58.

Right now I think Option A or Option F would be best.  Thoughts?

I would start by not holding to a specific option to get past NYC but be flexible based on traffic conditions towards and across the Hudson.  From there, if you can't clear either Largo, MD (on the DC Beltway) or Fairfax, VA (along I-66) by 4pm, I'd avoid the DC area.  Otherwise, you should be able to take I-95 to DC, with an alternative to I-95 south of DC being I-66 west to Gainesville then down US 29.

Ah, you're leaving from my neck of the woods...

Try this one: I-84 to I-684 to Sawmill to Tappan Zee to Garden State Parkway to NJTP.  I always use Exit 7 and go through the truck stops in Bordentown to get to 295 (206 South.  Take the first right past the Pilot, then your next right.  Just past the Petro is the I-295 south entrance.  Then I-295 to I-95 (then the DE 896/DE 2/ DE&MD 279 shunpike) back on to 95. Then I-895 to I-97 to MD 3 to US 301. Then 95 to 85 to 58 to 501.

Safe travels.

I used to take exactly that route (including Exit 7 to get to I-295 from the Turnpike) to go back home to Maryland, getting off at DE-896 and taking DE-4 (I think?) to get back on 95 in Maryland to avoid the stupid $4 toll.  I stopped going that way when I started going I-78 to US-15 to PA-97 to PA/MD-194 to get home.

I wonder if it would be better to go southbound via the inland route (I-81) or take the coastal route.  My wife has never been across the CBBT and I’d like to show her that, but then again, we may not reach it during daylight.

I just want to avoid I-95 at all costs, especially around DC.  The section from Alexandria to Fredericksburg in VA is freaking BRUTAL, even when taking the Lexus Lanes.

I think that the Merrit Pkwy is more senic than I-95.
