🛣 Headlines About California Highways – January 2021

It's the start of a new month, and in order for Punxsutawney Phil to be able to read the headlines about California Highways (yes, there is a California in Pennsylvania, which is why he cares), I have to post them. Of course, when he realizes they are not about California PA, but about Northern, Southern, and Central California on the West Coast, he might just see his shadow and go hide. Congratulations to the youngster, Gribblenation, for making it to 20 years. They have a podcast, folks, that's pretty interesting. Congrats also to Steve Alpert for updating his site. January has reminded us about some of the road sites that were there in the beginning, and are still going strong.

Amusingly I drive through the Fix-41 segment between Mountain View and Elkhorn almost everyday.  It was weird seeing that whole activism thing just suddenly pop up one day with signs everywhere.  The detour route on Camden Avenue when the No Passing zone was being put it actually was pretty tame given Harlan Avenue was closed off.  The detour continued south of Mountain View on Elm which was a temporary activation of the original CA 41 alignment. 

I did take some photos for the Gribblenation Facebook page but didn't bother with a blog given I did the two lane expressway years ago.

So good to see Adopt-A-Highway in Needles. If there's anywhere that need(le)s it ...

I support a uniform 65mph on US 395 pretty much everywhere from the Nevada state line to the Oregon state line, with the exception of the Susanville, Likely and Alturas segments. With Doyle and Janesville bypassed and nothing of note otherwise, I don't see any reason why not. Maybe Madeline.

Thanks for the heads up about the US 101 bridge (re) construction in Los Alamos.

Also, interesting comment about drivers using the Ridge Route as a bypass during winter weather.  I didn't realize that was a viable alternative - is Waze directing people there?

It was even though the Old Ridge Route isn't officially open between Templin Highway and Tumble Inn.  That led to some really unnecessary fingering pointing in the road world outside of AAroads.

Wrong. It is not a viable option and is officially closed. Large trucks cannot also legally traverse the roadway, open or not. I spent many hours personally dealing with the County, USFS, Caltrans, CHP, Sheriff, Waze, and Google to deal with the problem and got results. What have you done to help? I'd suggest getting the whole story instead of giving misinformation or calling out "unnecessary finger pointing" when you don't know what is going on.
